About the Author

One of the world's foremost motorcycle historians, Ian Falloon is the author of more than twenty books on motorcycles including the The Ducati 750 Bible, Ducati 900 Bible, Ducati Story, Moto Guzzi Story, Honda Story, Kawasaki Story, BMW Story, Moto Guzzi Sport Bible and Laverda Twin and Triple Bible. He has a small collection of classic sporting motorcycles, including a 1974 Ducati 750 Super Sport that he has owned since 1976. WOW! What a book on BMW's! Countless photo's in full color or black and white. Love the engine cut a-ways, showing what makes the heart of these engineering marvels tick. If you have even the slightest interest in these motorcycles, this book needs to be on the top of your "to purchase" list.

A great look at the history and style of BMWs

What a great romp through history through the eyes of a BMW. The style of this great machine has changed so much and all of the eras are wonderfully featured in this book. There are also wonderful details and stats of every model along with the great photos. The images range from "show room" style to action and even manufacturing shots. Each model's stats are listed including how many were manufactured- a fun fact for sure! A great big coffee table book a BMW motorcycle enthusiast would love.

BMWs from the earliest days to the present hot rods, it's all here

Just like Falloon's book on the Triumph, this volume on the BMW line is simply amazing. With the heavy, enameled paper stock, the photos literally snap off the pages. Early history of the marque explains many mysteries surrounding the name and badge. Old factory photos are a bonus. With three Airheads in my modest collection, I was pleased to see so many chapters devoted to the earlier R-models. Highly recommended for BMW mavens and aficionados.

An Amazon Best Book of September 2015: If you’re searching for an obtuse, synapse-dulling book on DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) and its mission to create breakthrough military technologies, look elsewhere. Jacobsen’s nimble account of the ultra-secret R&D arm of the Defense Department engagingly details the shrouded history of the organization, starting with its genesis during the nuclear arms race and covering its efforts up through today. In her final section, Jacobsen offers solid but chilling conjectures on what covert programs DARPA is focused on now. Jacobsen (a journalist and the author of Operation Paperclip and Area 51) strikes a balance between lauding the technology leaps driven by DARPA and pointing out that the ultimate goal is to create wartime tools to guarantee U.S. dominance. A comprehensive account of the diverse - and sometimes questionable - history of DARPA

"The Pentagon's Brain" is a comprehensive history of DARPA which puts the activities of the agency since its formation in the 1950s in perspective. The volume starts by describing the founding of the agency as a response to the scientific and technological threat posed by the Soviet Union and describes the political maneuvering involved in making the organization as independent as possible.

The book takes stock of many of the projects and paradigms DARPA has worked on since the beginning. Not surprisingly, early work focused on nuclear weapons, missile defense, spy satellites and submarine warfare, topics that were all relevant to the Cold War. With time the agency's mandate expanded to cover 'psychological warfare' and more human intelligence-centric projects. The book does a good job portraying the controversial activities of DARPA and its advisors, an elite group of scientists called the JASONS, during the Vietnam war. Later work by the agency was also not without controversy, like its advocacy of the missile defense shield Star Wars and its use of codebreaking that could be used to spy on the country's own citizens. Described too are peaceful inventions which DARPA pioneered such as health interventions on the battlefield, the Internet and the Human Terrain Project developed during the recent Iraq War which was gained at understanding populations in occupied countries; as the book says however, even such more benign endeavors often backfired since the information gained from them could cause resentment among occupied populations.

For me, two aspects of the book were particularly revealing. One was the sharp profiles of leading scientists like Herbert York, John von Neumann, Edward Teller, and Nicholas Christofilos (a remarkable and colorful character; a Greek elevator mechanic who created some of the most brilliant and audacious defense-related ideas in DARPA's history). The second was the accounts of diverse modern technologies that DARPA has contributed to (for obvious reasons, many weapons technologies like directed energy weapons are stated but not discussed). For instance, while drones are commonplace on the battlefield today, their first use was during the Vietnam war. Similarly I was not aware that the AR-15/M16 rife was invented by DARPA scientists. My minor gripe with the book was that it does not delve as much into the science as it could have and seems to contain some errors; for instance Enrico Fermi never told President Truman that the hydrogen bond was an evil thing (he voiced that opinion in an analysis by the General Advisory Committee of the Atomic Energy Commission), and a JASON report on the use of tactical nuclear weapons in Vietnam was not commissioned by Robert McNamara (it was inspired by a careless remark by a high-ranking general at a party).

Nonetheless, "The Pentagon's Brain" is a comprehensive and well-researched account of the myriad varieties of science and technology that DARPA has worked on and how they have affected many modern aspects of our technological existence. And as the narrative concludes, while DARPA has inevitably contributed to peaceful technologies (and these tend to be always emphasized in popular news sources), it should not be forgotten that the principal mandate of the organization remains the development of the weapons of tomorrow. Thus there will always be a moral ambiguity to the work done by DARPA.

Fascinating

I found The Pentagon's Brain utterly fascinating. At age 73, Ms Jacobsen's writing gives clarity to 'history' that I have lived through. Her writing in this, as in her previous two books, makes this history come alive as she chronicles now unclassified, top secret defense initiatives of the last 60 years. Not only does she delve into the complicated technical issues, but she makes it compelling as she captures the perspectives of those intimately involved. Found it fascinating to learn about our Defense Department's top secret and controversial research and development agency - DARPA. For me it was a page-turner.

She gets almost everything wrong about DARPA and GPS

In the last decade, I have written and spoken extensively about GPS. I am the co-author of GPS Declassified: From Smart Bombs to Smartphones, a narrative history of its invention and development. Recently, I was listening to a podcast of an interview with Annie Jacobson at the Spy Museum. I was surprised that she credited DARPA with the creation of GPS, since NONE of my research supports this. So I got a copy of her book to see what it claims.

On pages 249-250, she makes many incorrect statements:
“DARPA’s pioneering GPS program was called TRANSIT.” Transit was the first satellite based navigation system; it was conceptualized in 1958. DARPA played a major role in the program by funding it. GPS refers to a later system begun in 1973. Transit was NEVER called GPS.

“After several failed launches, TRANSIT finally took up residence in space in June 1963. To deny enemy access to this kind of precise targeting information, the system was originally designed with an offset built in, called selective availability (SA).” Selective availability was a degradation of the civilian signal for GPS. It was not used on Transit, which was much less precise.

“In 1973, the Pentagon ordered DARPA to create a single system shared by all the military services.” As I mentioned, she made a similar statement at the Spy Museum. This is incorrect. On April 17, 1973, Deputy Secretary of Defense William P. Clements, Jr., ordered the Air Force to be the executive service for a Joint Program Office for the Defense Navigation Satellite System (later called GPS). It was to be a joint Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force Program Office. DARPA was not mentioned because it played no role in the 1973 JPO. Later, DARPA funded development of miniaturized GPS receivers, but it DID NOT create the 1973 synthesis of the Navy’s Timation and the Air Force’s 621B programs (this is covered in detail in GPS Declassified). The Decision Coordinating Paper Number 121 (Revised) Defense Navigation Satellite Development Program (June 7, 1973) covers a meeting on the West Coast on June 6 and 7, 1973. There were Navy, Air Force and Army presentations. DARPA is nowhere mentioned because it was not involved in the process.

Ms. Jacobsen has an endnote for page 250 which references https://archive.org/stream/DARPATechnicalAccomplishmentsandHistoricalReviewofSelectedDARPAProjectsVolume1/DARPA%20Technical%20Accomplishments%20and%20Historical%20Review%20of%20Selected%20DARPA%20Projects%20Volume%201_djvu.txt She appears to have not read this reference very closely, since it correctly states that “TRANSIT is scheduled to be replaced by the DoD Global Positioning System (GPS) which uses different technology, in 1996.” Her assertion that DARPA developed GPS in 1973 is not found in this document, so it’s unclear what the source of this fable was. Perhaps it stems from her confusion of Transit with GPS. There are eighteen references to GPS in the document, but it nowhere claims that DARPA played a role in its initial formulation in 1973. Many of the references pertain to the dual use of GPS satellites which carry nuclear detonation detection systems in addition to the navigational instruments. Phil Klass, in the 11/26/73 issue of Aviation Week and Space Technology, wrote that the [Defense Navigation Satellite System] program has been renamed the Global Positioning System.
On page 253 she states that [under Secretary of Defense Harold Brown in the Carter Administration] “Global Positioning System technologies were accelerated at whirlwind speeds”. It’s true that the first Block 1 (test) GPS satellites were launched in the Carter Administration. However, in 1979 it cut back GPS from 24 to 18 satellites. This would have limited its accuracy and usefulness. When the Block 2 (operational) satellites were launched beginning in 1989, the decision was made to go back to 24 satellites. Thus, there was no acceleration of GPS under Secretary Brown; rather there were significant cut backs in the program.

I have not read the rest of the book, but the sloppy research on GPS is in line with the criticisms of her earlier books, and calls into question the factual bases for other DARPA projects she discussed. I posted a brief criticism of the book on her website. I commend her for allowing it to appear. That demonstrates that she is a person of integrity. Perhaps she will correct the section on GPS in a subsequent edition of the book. There is a vast literature on the creation of GPS (and controversy about the relative importance of the Navy’s Timation system, which my dad Roger Easton began in 1964, versus the Air Force’s 621B). It’s surprising that Ms. Jacobsen appears to be unaware of it.

If you're a teacher, parent of someone just interested in maths, this is a book you should get.

A refreshening new take on the age old question of why some people seem to "get" maths while others struggle with it. Paul systematically sets out the fundamentals of math and dismisses some of the traditional language that only baffles young minds. I particularly like his way of describing the multiplying of two two digit numbers. Paul managed to keep up well into the night, challenging the orthodoxy that I teach day in and day out. It is not a dry book either, with lots of anecdotes and stories to explain maths concepts to young and no so young minds. Almost every day I see students struggling with maths; the blank looks on their faces showing some that have given up. I look forward to using this text to reignite some of the magic of maths for my students. Working out the 9 times tables on the fingers is going to go down a treat.

"Ace" your certification exam with confidence!

For those who don’t know, a personal training certification by The American Council on Exercise, or ACE, is recognized as one of the gold standard certifications! Employers and potential clients will recognize this certification and will be more likely to hire you as a certification by ACE implies that you know your stuff! However, they do not just hand out these certifications to anyone. The test portion of this exam is said to be extremely challenging, which is why this book has helped me so much in learning important material, and gaining confidence. This book covers topics such as: Anatomy, basic first aid, strength training techniques, and even strategies to utilize while taking your certification exam to help you improve your score! The book even contains a practice exam with an answer key which will really help you accurately gauge how prepared you are to take the certification exam!

What I like best about this book is that it is written in language that anybody can understand. Whether you are a complete beginner to the exercise world, or a seasoned athlete, you will have no trouble understanding the content of this book.

One thing I would have liked to have seen in this book is some pictures or diagrams. While the text did a great job explaining most of these concepts, there are some concepts that pictures would have done a much better job at illustrating such as testing BMI using body fat calipers, demonstration proper range of motion, etc.

Overall, I thought this was a very insightful book, and after reading it I feel much more prepared to take my ACE personal training certification!

For a very high level complex test, this simplifies it. It relieves nerves and provides tips only an expert would know. The organization is easy to follow and the content is easy to read. The book is thick enough to be all encompassing, yet thin enough to not be overwhelming. The content is vast in nature, yet it speaks to those needing that extra boost in confidence to really pass the exam.

As someone that has test anxiety and wants that boost to be able to really feel confident and secure in going into the exam, I feel this book aids in that. It is no secret exams like this are costly both in money and time. Typically the test taker is worn out emotionally and physically after a session. Hopefully this book takes care of some of that.

It really seems to be a five star book in every way. Even the font is easy to read. It should be a go-to guide for those studying for this test.

About the Author
Michael Rennhack started his nuclear career in 1989, founded NukeWorker.com ten years later in 1999 and has served as the President and Chief Executive Officer since its inception. Under his leadership, NukeWorker.com has experienced phenomenal growth and has become the nation's leading provider of nuclear job site services and the nuclear industry's most popular community.

Mr. Rennhack has been a member of the local and national Health Physics Societies since 1996. In 2000, Brookhaven National Lab honored Mr. Rennhack for his participation in their Ambassador Program for his work with the Boy Scouts, helping them earn their Atomic Energy Merit Badge. In 2008, Michael was elected Council Member of the East Tennessee Chapter of the Health Physics Society. In addition to founding NukeWorker.com, Mr. Rennhack has held radiological engineering, radiological management, and project management positions, and has worked at more than 50 nuclear facilities around the country.

In 2014 Mr. Rennhack was nominated for the prestigious Charles D. (Bama) McKnight Memorial Award, which is awarded by the NRRPT Board of Directors to persons who have given outstanding efforts in the radiation protection training field leading to increased knowledge and professionalism among Radiation Protection Technologists.

Born February 14th, 1971 in Michigan to Jerry and Betty Rennhack, Michael's love of computers began at age 11 when he programmed his first electronic community (BBS). Michael was the youngest board member of the local computer users group at age 14, and at age 18 he began his nuclear career as a decontamination technician. In 1999, Michael merged his passion for computers and the nuclear industry with the creation of NukeWorker.com, the first website dedicated to enriching nuclear workers lives.

Very informative and well written!

A big "Thank you" to Mr. Rennhack for making my life easier when it is test time. The NUF is a mandatory requirement for my job and it can be very stressful knowing my job could be in jeopardy without a passing score. This book is by far the best and most informative study guide I have ever used when preparing to take the NUF. I would definitely recommend this book.

you need this book!

If you are going to own a Sprite or Midget with a 1275cc engine this is a have to have book.
I found that the part on the transmission was wondeful in that it allowed me to rebuild mine after a snapped 1st 2nd gear assembly. I also replaced the baluk rings for the syncros.
the special tools the recommend can be improvized using 3 19cent bic pin caps and a 4 inch steel hose clamp
all in all a book Icould not have rebuilt the engine and transmission with out.

Witches, werewolves, government agents...phew

This is the first of Alisa’s newest shifter series. She introduces us to the three River brothers, werewolf shifters who run a successful security business, Jared, Jaxson, and Jace. As the title suggests, this is Jaxson’s story. He is the pack Alpha and is being pressured into finding his mate. He is hiding a secret, a secret that if found out, will most likely cost him the position of Alpha and jeopardize the packs security.

After her parents’ death, Olivia Lilyfield grew up in the foster care system. Her mother was a witch, but Olivia is determined to never use her magical abilities. A chance encounter, where she stupidly and fearlessly tries to save him, Olivia ends up in the path of none other than Jaxson, after which neither of their lives will ever be the same.

Jaxson and his brothers, along with all the shifters in the area, are facing a terrible problem. They are being kidnapped and no one has any idea by whom. The security office needs help and Jaxson hires Olivia as their new office assistant. This is something that can cause even more problems as both are extremely attracted to each other, but their magic could be lethal to one another. Add to that the fact that witches and werewolves are mortal enemies, and you have yourself quite the explosive combination.

This story is full of dramatic moments as well as those hot and steamy ones that Alisa is known for with her shifters. Olivia and Jaxson will surely keep you on the edge of your seat with their heat, while the drama surrounding the kidnappings will keep you entertained and wanting to know who’s behind it all.

The characters are well written and the story fast paced. You are not left with a cliffhanger, but you just know that there is so much more to be told and we are definitely left wanting to get our hands on Jace and Jared.

I know I'm going to slammed with negative votes on that 'Helpful' button, but I have to write my reviews with my HONEST opinion.
I don't know why I keep trying to read 'New Adult' genre books. They seem interesting until you start reading them. This one showed potential, but by chapter 5 it became apparent there were a few problems with the story.
1. To much repetitiveness with the thought processes. Same thoughts for you to read over & over again. It is a book, a story. I want new thoughts that show how their new experiences are effecting them.
2. To many empty details. Once you have given a basic description of a person, place or thing that has a minor part in the plot of the story, stop. If it is not necessary to the story, don't use it.
3. The sex scenes come off a bit immature & undeveloped.
This had a good plot with interesting characters. I am sure the age bracket of 18 to 24 or so will like it. But for me, it just didn't make the grade. It could have been great, but was just okay.

Jaxson is an alpha wolf-shifter, but the pressure is weighing him down. He must mate to keep his status and keep his pack together, but he harbors a secret that could kill any mate he claims.

Olivia is half witch with a dark past she is hiding from. She keeps everyone at arms length and working dead end jobs to try and better her own existence. After coming across a shifter getting beat in the alley, she shows her strength in her attempts to help the helpless. Little does she know, she could use some help herself.

While the love was solid, and the bond was practically immediate, the plot could have developed more. There was action between two rescue missions, but not much was revealed. The back characters needed more presence, I think. It made it seem like there were just a few, like less than 10 made up the River Pack, but we learn there were at least 2 dozen. There were six names thrown around in the beginning, but there wasn't much.

It was good, with some boring sections, but it was worth reading. By far, it wasn't the best, but a decent read. It's a good "in between" book.
