I will try now the advance HTML programming

I know HTML programming a little and I want to deepen my knowledge about it. Yes, I know and I admit that I am still a beginner in HTML but I really want to enhance my skill in HTML programming. When I saw this book I told to myself that I am lucky because there is CSS in this book. This book is a big help for me to understand my knowledge in HTML and CSS in short period of time. There is information here that every beginners in HTML and CSS must know. I found this book very fun because there are sample programs that I can practice. This is a complete package for me.

Eprogramy does it again!

Eprogramy is quickly becoming one of my favorite programming resource guide writers. As I've come to expect from their guides the information starts with getting you acquainted with what html and Css. It is a guide for beginners, but it doesn't spoon feed the information. Intermediates and experts would still be able to use this guide as a reference source with its easy to navigate sections and subsections. There aren't any quizzes to test how well you know the information, but there are several examples for referencing whether or not your programming "looks right." This isn't one of those guides with tons of "filler" and no actual content. Whether or not you will use the information is based on your programming knowledge, and not if it's useful. Once you feel comfortable with your html and css there is an excerpt into Java script at the end. Since these programs work hand in hand, this excerpt provides a great introduction into what comes next. I highly recommend this book and others by eprogramy to anyone with programming needs.

Digging into the basics from explaining about the difference between programming language and HTML to going on explain all that entails in HTML, this book weaves it all nicely. Technology and technological terms could be daunting but this book keeps it all simple and makes it easier for readers to understand and grasp the subject. The book gives detailed information about HTML5 and CSS3 along with basics of JavaScript that one would require to create web pages. The examples in the book are a definite plus. This book is a good crash course for those looking to learn to be web developer.

About the Author
Donna Mullaney is currently Supervisor of English Language Arts, K–5, in Plainfield, New Jersey. She helped to create a curriculum in her district that aligned to the Common Core State Standards and has facilitated workshops on standards-based instruction and PARCC. Additionally, she worked as a literacy coach for the NJDOE, where she presented literacy workshops throughout the state, coached teachers, and supported best practices in literacy. After leaving the NJDOE, she continued to work as a literacy coach in Plainfield. Donna served as an interventionist for her district before becoming a supervisor. She began her career in Philadelphia, where she taught both primary and upper elementary grades. She is passionate about literacy and considers herself a lifelong learner. She currently resides in East Brunswick with her husband, Robert, and her Jack Russell Terrier, Penny. Her two daughters, Taryn and Kelly, also share her love of literature!

Great Resource to Help Prepare for PARRC!

I tutor students and was looking for a resource to help with PARRC. I really like the way this book explains everything. I bought other books last year and they just have practice tests, but this one explains the different question types and actually gives tips for responding to questions and writing tasks. The narrative writing section had some great charts.

About the Author
Dana Amendola, Vice President of Operations for Disney Theatrical Productions, has helped bring such memorable performances as King David, The Lion King, Aida, Tarzan, Mary Poppins, and The Little Mermaid, and Newsies to the Broadway stage. He has published two books with Disney Editions: A Day at the New Amsterdam Theatre and Dear Mufasa: Children's Letters To The Lion King. Fantastic book, but some missing opportunities

This book is really great and covers a lot of materials. HOWEVER it is missing some things that would have made this book even more spectacular: there is nothing about the OTHER railroads and trains in the Disney parks such as the Monorail, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, the Seven Dwarves Mine Train, the PeopleMover, the Trolley on Main Street USA, or about the homages to trains in Disney parks - like the Villas at Disney's Wilderness Lodge, the Main Street USA train station itself, the painting of the Golden Spike moment uniting the Transcontinental Railroad in Disney Town Hall (i.e. the information center on Main Street), the Contemporary Resort (and its Monorail feature), the Circus Train playground in New Fantasyland, and so forth. These are topics that could have doubled the length of this book - and I was sad they were not featured here. Don't get me wrong - the book is fantastic in its coverage of trains in Disney films and Walt's love of trains and descriptions of the locomotives in all the Disney parks (though not information on the coal cars or the passenger areas, mind you). So if you want that, this book is perfect for you. But if you (like me) were hoping for more about other trains and railroads around the Disney parks, you might be disappointed. Perhaps this can be the focus of a second book... "All Aboard 2"?

Gotta love a writer obsessed with his subject!

I've never been more or less of a Disney or Train fan than most people. I picked up this book in the store and was totally taken in by the style and the information put forth. Mr. Amandola has created a wonderful volume that gives new and fascinating information about something he is obviously obsessed. I can't wait to read about any other things he may obsess about. Cheers! to Mr. Amendola and the trains that engage him!

Entertaining and Informative

I bought this book as an anniversary present for my husband, since we are both Disney fans and rail fans (that means train enthusiast for those unfamiliar with the term). The stories behind the locomotives are both interesting and heartwarming (the story about Ollie Johnston made us both cry). The photos are beautiful, and even if you're not a rail fan you will find this book entertaining and informative. You can sense the enthusiasm in both Dana Amendola's and John Lasseter's stories - their love of trains is contagious! My husband and I have a whole new appreciation for these beautiful locomotives!

Disappointing and Disjointed

I was looking forward to reading Monsters; I bought it with a few other books and jumped into it first. Unfortunately, the book was considerably less satisfying than the promise. Part One is a history of the airship, leading up to an including the Hindenburg disaster. Part Two is the author explaining his theory of pathological technologies, which a) are massive in size or effect, b) induce in proponents a high degree of fixation or emotional enthusiasm, c) induce its proponents to ignore or underplay significant dangers or unintended consequences, and d) confers benefits significantly outweighed by its costs in lives, money and other resources. In Part Two he gives one chapter stories of three abortive (so far) technologies which he says meet those criteria: Project Plowshare (a post-WWII proposal to use nuclear weapons for geo-engineering - like what Elon Musk proposes for Mars); the Superconducting SuperCollider, and the 100 Year Starship proposal. What about ocean liners, which at points in their history meet all of his criteria? The Apollo Program? The Space Shuttle? He's essentially picked three technologies (besides airships) that he holds in contempt, and builds a theory around them that's not particularly useful or compelling. In Part Three, he tosses in a chapter discussing what really destroyed the Hindenburg (should have been in Part One, and a chapter on mass delirium (should have been in Part Two - or else the epilogue). His tone throughout is contemptuous - if only Zeppelin, the German public, and any number of later proponents of his despised technologies had his wisdom and perspective (ah, the joys of hindsight). But they didn't, so he weaves into his writing constant descriptions of these fools as stupid, short-sighted, etc. - it's advocacy rather than history, delivered in a sneering style that reminds the reader of the person everyone knows who trashes people constantly - as long as they're outside the room.

To summarize, what I was hoping was a history of the development and death of rigid lighter than air transport (completely excludes blimps) and especially of the Hindenburg (who doesn't enjoy a good disaster story?) is instead a starting point for an odd and disappointing theory that isn't developed particularly well. I wish I'd spent a few more minutes skimming in the bookstore before I headed for the register.

The Birth, Career, And Death Of Fabulous But Fatally Flawed Technology

We have all seen that newsreel film many times: as the gigantic zeppelin called the Hindenburg comes into view and begins to descend to its landing zone in Lakehurst, New Jersey a young man's voice narrates what appears to be a routine and rather humdrum event. Then suddenly flames erupt and within seconds the entire craft is engulfed. Small figures are seen leaping from the gondola while others already on the ground run for their lives. Meanwhile the young announcer's panicked voice rises as he describes the inferno, culminating in his famous "Oh, the humanity!" Ed Regis's new book is an invaluable and engrossing history of how The Hindenburg and its sister zeppelins were constructed and used, of the intelligent but somewhat eccentric men who dreamed up the idea in the first place, and of the ultimate abandonment of hydrogen-based lighter than air craft.

Regis classifies the zeppelin or dirigible as an example of pathological technology: grandiose visions which capture the imagination and are carried out at enormous expense and with a blind eye turned to any hazards, but ultimately abandoned once their lack of practical use and inherent danger becomes clear. The idea of lighter than air craft has been around for centuries. Regis provides some interesting and entertaining information on the philosophers and scientists in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries who began to dream up ways to allow humans to sail the skies in airships. In the eighteenth century hot air and hydrogen balloons were experimented with, and in the nineteenth century their value in warfare began to be appreciated, both in the American Civil War and during the Siege of Paris in 1870. Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin, a Prussian officer who was assigned to observe balloon reconnaissance flights during the Civil War, was entranced with the idea of lighter than air flight and devoted much of his career to making it a practical reality. His dream came to be widely shared throughout the new German Empire, where it was a symbol of national pride and ingenuity. Even though the zeppelins were unwieldy and vulnerable to even the slightest mishaps, larger and larger versions of them were constructed and put into service carrying passengers and cargo. During World War I they were put into use for reconnaissance and for bombing raids, though their inherent vulnerabilities made them extremely dangerous to their own crews. After World War I Germany continued to build and put into service larger and larger hydrogen based zeppelins, which continued to crash and burn or suffer other crippling mishaps until the outbreak of a new war in 1939 caused them to be permanently shelved.

There is much to enjoy in Monsters. I found the early history of lighter than air craft fascinating. Count von Zeppelin's career made for good reading as an example of the enthusiastic amateur who creates an industry almost single-handedly. It was entertaining, though disturbing, to read about the many occasions when early zeppelins either failed to work at all or achieved momentary success but were then destroyed by freak accidents. Most of all I enjoyed reading about the Hindenburg's final voyage with its crew and passengers enduring cramped quarters (but excellent cuisine) and breathtaking views until the final moments, when split-second decisions about where and whether to jump and run made the difference between life and death. Regis does a good job of describing the German and American investigations into the causes of the disaster and of summing up its likely causes, then of the last few years of the hydrogen based zeppelin era.

Regis uses the Hindenburg as an example par excellence of pathological technology, and that's certainly a good way of describing it. I'm more hesitant in endorsing some of his other examples of pathological technology, however. There's no question that the idea of using hydrogen bombs as part of massive engineering projects like building a new port in Alaska or a new canal in Central America is a terrible one, and we should all be thankful that the proposed Project Plowshare was shelved. But I think it's too soon and too facile to simply dismiss the idea of a 100-Year Starship or the achievements of physicists using super-colliders as impractical or unachievable.

Airship history interesting, but some pathological technology arguments lazy and uninspired (despite potential)

I came into this book hoping for an interesting read on airships and perhaps an enlightening thesis on pathological technologies that we should inoculate ourselves against. The airship history is a smooth, enjoyable read except for the utter contempt Regis constantly has for everything airship. After this he lays into Project Plowshare (nuclear warheads for civilian uses), the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC), and the 100 year starship (his singular 'current' pathological tech example).

The disappointment for me was that he neglects to mention how fixed wing aircraft have suffered from this (Spruce Goose, anyone?) along with ocean liners and warships. Also, why more airship material is at the end of the book is beyond me. Readers may want to skip the 'other pathological tech' sections and read the "6 Hindenburgs" part first. I'll continue with the other examples here:

Project Plowshare was a good example and one of the few sections I rather enjoyed.

The section on the SSC was a little jarring in that he fully acknowledges that other colliders were on budget and gave good science, the main problem with the SSC was the ballooning budget and mismanagement and the need to fund other areas of science with limited resources. But, for example, LIGO cost a pretty penny and only employed a small 'elite' group as do many astronomy projects yet I would say this is well spent science money, despite the risks. His argument that the SSC should not have even been given a chance just rings a little hollow.

And then we come to something more current, I was hoping he would use all the vigor and contempt he had for airships and pick on something significant in modern technology. Instead ... he goes after the 100 year spaceship, barely a blip on the scientific radar full of mostly harmless humans musing about interstellar travel. Yes Ed, we can see that interstellar travel should not be given huge amounts of funding, but where is the *meat* in this book? Don't leave us with all this hindsight 20/20 stuff about airships and then not have the courage to go after something significant in the modern era!

Overall, it was an OK read. If you are reading this primarily for the airship history, it will be interesting. Wait for some real meat on pathological technology, however.

At 133 pages there isn't a lot of room to waste and, to the author's credit, waste isn't apparently in his lexicon. Each chapter deals with a specific part of a surveillance operation and broken down into various elements, each with a number of concise points to remember. That's pretty much it: but believe me there is a wealth of information, just presented in very few words.

This is not a 'how to' manual. And, as should be evident from the title, it is an accompaniment to a training regime, a guide for an instructor, or a reminder to experienced surveillance operators.

There is nothing negative I can say about this book. Definitely an A+ as far as I'm concerned.

EVERY surveillance operator should have a copy.

Great Workbook for alphabet (uppercase)!

The workbook has what I was looking for. It has a very thoughtful step-by-step process of tracing. First specially made letters are given with arrows and instructions. Here, I like the idea to trace by finger before tracing by pencil. Then black dotted letters, then gray dotted letters then just guidelines.
I also love it for my kids because:
1…FULL SIZE WORKBOOK The size of the workbook is 8.5 x 11 (inches).
2…4 PAGES FOR EACH LETTER So enough pages for practice.
3…COLORING PORTION To color, one letter and one picture are given for each letter.
4…TRACING PORTION For each letter:
First of all, 3 specially made letters are given with arrows and instructions.
Then, 21 letters are given, 9 of them are black dotted letters with guidelines and 12 of them are gray dotted letters with guidelines.
5…PRINTING PORTION Blank guidelines are also given to write the letter 6 times
6…BIG SIZE LETTERS The letters have a height of 2 inches.
7…. GOOD QUALITY PAGES The paper is white and the quality of the paper is good.

About the Author

Charles Platt is a Contributing Editor and regular columnist for Make magazine, where he writes about electronics. He is the author of the highly successful introductory hands-on book, Make:Electronics, and is writing a sequel to that book in addition to volumes 2 and 3 of the Encyclopedia of Electronic Components.

Platt was a Senior Writer for Wired magazine, and has written various computer books. As a prototype designer, he created semi-automated rapid cooling devices with medical applications, and air-deployable equipment for first responders. He was the sole author of four mathematical-graphics software packages, and has been fascinated by electronics since he put together a telephone answering machine from a tape recorder and military-surplus relays at age 15. He lives in a Northern Arizona wilderness area, where he has his own workshop for prototype fabrication and projects that he writes about for Make magazine.

This is the perfect introduction to hands-on electronics

I am about a third of the way through this book and I am loving it. This is the perfect introduction to hands-on electronics. I was an engineering student in college (although not electrical engineering) so I was always kind of upset that after spending countless nights of my life doing all sorts of crazy math problems with respect to circuits, I didn't know something as simple as how a relay works, or how to build anything except maybe a simple circuit with a lightbulb and a resistor. I could design and build an RC circuit and calculate its time-constant but why in God's name I would ever NEED to build an RC circuit was beyond me...
No more. This book lets you know that its safe to rip open a relay and see exactly why it works. It will give you a circuit design and then have you build it. It will explain why something is or isn't working, and why. This won't make you an expert in electronics, it is definitely on the simple side of things (like algebraic simplifications of mathematical models that are actually rooted in calculus or differential equations), but that's exactly what I was looking for. This book will empower you to build things. I am reading it side by side with the Electricity & Magnetism chapters of my old Physics textbook so I can make the connections with the real theory and the nastier side of the math, but I really couldn't be happier. In spite of years of college, this book is just now making me feel like I know something about electronics.
Also, I recommend buying the kit that's sold for this book because it will save you a little money and a LOT of time. Amazon has been out of stock of it forever, but I went to the closest Radioshack and they had it for $75. Other than that, you will need to buy Digital Multimeter, a pair of wire strippers that can deal with 22-gauge wire, a pair of wire-cutters, a pair of needlenose pliers, and a set of precision screw drivers. Seems steep but if you plan on making use of your new-found knowledge for the foreseeable future, you will be using these tools well after you've worked through this book.

Intro book for the beginner, handbook for the intermediate/advanced

**Intro**
This is a nice electronics book. It starts out basic enough that I would say an enthusiastic student in 4th grade or higher, with ample support from their parents could probably get into electronics as a hobby by beginning with this book. It is also suitable for much more advanced people if they are willing to skip the first third of so of the book where the basics are. I meet this category, since I'm a Mechanical Engineer (but importantly, not an Electrical Engineer), and I'm happy to have bought this book just the same.

**Notable positive features**
1.) This book is substantial. It has glossy pages, color photos, and is 325 pages long. The pictures are bright and sharp. This is the second edition, and the author described the things that have been improved from the first edition.
2.) There's a lot of basic info for accommodating beginners, and a good brush-up course for more advanced people. It tells how to solder, identify resistors, install and use things like IC's and LED's without burning them out, etc. It tells the basic facts about electronic components, like what IC's, LEDs, and capacitors *are*. It recommends tools and where to get tools and equipment from. It encourages you to experiment in order to learn, like it tells you how to actually go burn up an LED just to see how much (or how little) abuse they can take.
3.) It has helpful info to explain the subtle electrical engineering concepts that have always confused me, like the difference between a relay and a transistor, and what the three leads on transistors do. My college electronics textbooks didn't do a good job at this, so that's the sort of thing that I'm getting out of this book.
4.) It has safety information. Soldering safety. Shock hazard safety. What you should and shouldn't be afraid of.
5.) It doesn't jump into wiring diagrams instantly. It uses photos and other types of sketches for people who haven't mastered wiring diagrams yet.
6.) It has little bits of electronics history in it in the form of photos of the scientists and engineers from history, and captions under the photo. This keeps things entertaining without filling the text with unwanted extra info.
7.) There is information toward the end on how to program software for your own contraptions using Arduino, a fun, versatile, and cheap software that is good for programming robots and other things.
8.) There are some neat example projects, including a crystal radio (a radio that doesn't need batteries).

**Comparison to Hacking Electronics by Simon Monk**
This book is pretty similar to Hacking Electronics by Simon Monk, and those interested in the topic at hand should consider both of these books. Both are well written, cover a similar spectrum of topics, have color photos, and have glossy pages. I would say both are equally good in writing and content *quality.* This book is slightly longer than the Monk book, and thus has more content, so I like it slightly more for that, because I'm a little more advanced, and I tend to want as much info as possible so I can use it as a reference or handbook. Finally, this book seems a little better for hardware tinkering people than the Monk book, since the Arduino part in this book comprises a smaller percentage of the whole book than in the Monk book.

**Summary**
If you want to get into tinkering with electronics for fun, or want to learn more about electronics via a "learn by doing" approach, this is definitely a good book. It starts out basic enough that you can probably start from the very ground level, with knowing almost nothing. I think this book would also be good if you are teaching grade school or middle school students about electronics. Finally, this book would be a good handbook for the shop of a maker, circuit bender, hobby roboticist, or anyone else that likes to tinker with electronics, and needs an occasional reminder about resister color codes, for example, or how to hook up transistors.

I recommend this book with essentially no reservations!

Great book to learn basic electronics

I decided to take up learning electronics after years of being in the dark and not understand how any new gadgets worked and now I love it thanks to Make Electronics! I started googling to find the best sources for an adult to learn basic electronics and this book kept coming up so I picked one up along with the protechtrader component pack for Make Electronics 2nd edition. After getting through the first few experiments I fell in love with the book and couldn’t put it down. The author Charles Platt does a very nice job of engaging you and being easy to understand for someone without much of a background with electronics other than using them. It also made it really nice to have the component pack with all of the parts to match the experiments otherwise I may not have gotten very far. I would recommend this to anyone looking to learn basic electronics, you will not be disappointed.
