A must for any aspiring writer...a winner...again!

Tracy and I served in the Corps together and I've had the honor and pleasure of watching her grow as an author. This book should be required reading for anybody who wants to write, whether military or civilian. Excellent writing and research techniques exhibited in this book and a treat for any writer.

I would highly recommend this book to all veterans

As a former marine and Veterans Counselor, I found Tracy Crow's book amazingly insightful, concise, and a practical guide for writing our stories! I would highly recommend this book to all veterans, family members, educators, and therapist working with veterans and their families. Sharing our stories is so critical towards our healing, and because a very small percentage of our society has served in the military, we need to get our stories out to our communities. Thank you Tracy for creating this book! I'm looking forward to not only utilizing it for my own writings, but I plan to use this book for my future Boots to Books class at my college! You Rock!!!!!

About the Author
WINSTON GROOM is the author of 14 previous books of nonfiction and fiction, including Shiloh 1862, Vicksburg 1863, Patriotic Fire, Shrouds of Glory, Forrest Gump, and Conversations with the Enemy (with Duncan Spencer), which was a Pulitzer Prize finalist. He lives with his wife and daughter in Point Clear, Alabama.

Generally fun read with glaring errors

I had high hopes for this book, but I ended up being a little disappointed and questioning of the author's credibility. While giving an overview of German conquests early in WWII, he includes the assertion that Finland and Sweden were conquered by Nazi armies. First, Finland was a German ally throughout the war, and second, Sweden was famously neutral throughout the war! It's such an egregious factual error that it made me question the credibility of the rest of the book. He later asserts that a "significant portion of the American Army...including the 101st Airborne Division" was surrounded by the Germans during the Battle of the Bulge. Again, this is just plain dead wrong...the 101st was the ONLY division (of nearly 50) of the American Army in Europe surrounded by the Germans during that battle...or any battle, for that matter. These are issues of the most basic military history that he gets absurdly wrong.

I didn't keep notes, so those are the ones that stood out in particular, but there were others that weren't as patently obvious. He also seems to exaggerate the influence of the three Aviators at several points. For instance, he claims one was directed to inform air corps personnel during speeches in N. Africa and the Mediterranean theaters that their minimum tours had been extended. I highly doubt a visiting civilian would be tasked with personally informing thousands of airmen of a MAJOR policy change in their assignments. I suppose it's possible in the remotest sense, but I rolled my eyes at the likelihood of it.

He also claims the Doolittle raid essentially led to what ultimately became the Japanese defeat. Hmmm, every other historian and war leaders at the time agreed it's only real value was a morale boost...and nothing more. He also refers to the German JU-88 light bombers that attacked Doolittle's B-17 as one of the most dangerous German planes in their arsenal. Ha! Not exactly. Any single-engine fighter (the JU-88 was a twin-engine light bomber) would have been MUCH more dangerous.

These may seem like nit-picks, but they're such basic mistakes, and the more subtle exaggerations were sufficiently commonplace that it left a poor taste in my mouth and led me to be skeptical of the overall factual accuracy of the book. Also, there's really nothing new in it that one couldn't get from any number of biographies of the principals that has already been written. He doesn't really tie in the experiences of the three into any cohesive or overarching premise as to how they collectively...as a coordinated threesome...advanced aviation.

Still, I gave it 3 stars, because it IS a fairly entertaining read, I learned a few things (I think...if they were fully accurate anyway), and it's a fast read. Just remember to have some grains of salt on-hand if you do read it.

A Gripping Tale of Three Avation Heroes

Winston Groom's prose never disappoints, and this gripping history of three aviation giants is no exception. Following the lives of Charles Lindberg, Jimmy Doolittle, and Eddie Rickenbacker, this engaging account provides a personal angle to this pivotal era in human innovation and heroism. Although aviation experts may not be surprised by much of the information herein, this is a nonetheless well-researched and well-written account that I found very fresh and insightful. Although it may be difficult to imagine a time when air travel was in its early stages, Groom's storytelling brings this unforgettable era in history alive with an intriguing attention to detail that will keep you turning the pages. Along the likes of An Aviator's Wife, I find this a fine specimen of non-fiction that every aviation enthusiast or history buff should read.

an absolute perfect book for this reader.....

For me this is like a Paul Harvey radio broadcast where he liked to enlighten listeners to "the rest of the story" as it were. Now I'm sure true historians and history buffs will not be shocked or surprised by the contents of this book. There are plenty of large volume bios and autobiographies available like Lindbergh, I Could Never Be So Lucky Again: An Autobiography of James H. ""Jimmy"" Doolittle with Carroll V. Glinesand Rickenbacker: An Autobiography.

The three aviators featured are Eddie Rickenbacker,first fame as a champion race car driver and world war I hero, Charles Lindbergh , he of the first non stop flight across the Atlantic in 1927 and Jimmy Doolittle who pioneered flying without the aid of visuals , just by instruments in 1929.

This reader was familiar with the highlights only of each of these great aviators/men and so this book which touched on their early career heroics and then followed through with lesser known but not lesser interesting or lesser important involvements in WWII all in a snappy 400 plus pages was a very enlightening read and just the right length. As I mentioned earlier if anyone wants to get truly intimate with finer details on any of these pilots those books are available but the beauty of this book is that it takes three amazing men whose stories work well in a single volume and I guess you could liken this to a "greatest hits" so to speak.

If you are an historian this may be redundant for you. If you are interested in history and aviation in particular and know who these men are but don't really know their full stories, this is perfect for you as I found it to be for me. The writer is an engaging story teller and I never drifted off. Don't let my review make you think this book lacks detail, it is very detailed, the author has just limited his scope of coverage on these three aviators and for me that was enough.

I received an advance copy without the benefit of 16 pages of photographs or the 4 maps so I can not speak to their quality or helpfulness but I am curious enough after reading to plan on checking out the actual release to view both. I am assuming in particular the maps will help illustrate Mr Doolittle and his men's advance on Japan.

About the Author
Daniel Franks is a Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Social Responsibility of Mining at the University of Queensland, Australia, and serves as Co-Chair for Social Impact Assessment at the International Association for Impact Assessment. The dynamics for change in the mining sector

Hermann Goering once said that every time he heard the word “culture” he reached for his revolver. While I have no time for fascism I must admit I feel the same way whenever I hear someone from the mining industry use the term “world’s best practice.” I have heard mining industry representatives use the most outlandishly lavish language to describe some of the worst environmental management of mine sites, slap-dash rehabilitation efforts and bullying relations with landholders that I sometimes have trouble giving credit to those companies and individuals who do the right thing.

This book by Daniel Franks has forced me to be more selective in my criticisms. This is not to say that Franks is an apologist for bad mining practices; quite the contrary. He knows where the bodies are buried; he is aware of the industry’s history and, most importantly, of the many examples of environmental NGOs and communities standing up against the companies to reveal bad practice and demand reform. His book starts with an examination of the impact of the Mining, Minerals and Sustainable Development Initiative of 2000-2002. This looked at how the mining and minerals sector could contribute to the global transition to sustainable development . Through an extensive series of interviews with agents of change from within the industry as well as many from outside Franks develops an approach to social change which shows how insiders and outsiders can work together to achieve good outcomes. Rather than talk vaguely about how the industry, as a whole, makes decisions leading to greater sustainability, as the industry spin doctors do, he puts names to various positions taken and influence wielded and consequently, gives credit where it is due. I was also impressed by examples he gave of communities, especially in developing nations, resisting exploitative and destructive mining practices. This is not to say the author takes an anti-mining stance. He is, as he states early in the book, a supporter of mining and a believer in sustainable mining practices.

This is not written in an overly scholarly manner. It is well written for a wider audience. Hopefully it will be read widely in the mining sector.

Mountain Movers provides critical context to anyone wanting to work in or currently working in "the orbit of the mining industry". It is this context that provides the 'why' things are done (or not done) on site or in head office for many resource development companies.

When compared to most mining or environmental/science books about the resource industry, Mountain Movers is easy to read. It tells a factual story and not just pages of dry facts.

Mountain Movers is unique in that it provides a framework for the reader to identify themselves and others as change agents and the type of change agent they are. This framework provides an opportunity to even greater understanding of the players in the sustainability business, which in itself can lead to more sustainable resource development around the world.

Fast-paced account of corporate change in a relatively inertial sector

For full disclosure, Dr. Franks worked in our team at the Centre for Social Responsibility in Mining, and I have known him as a colleague during the time this book was being written and am aware of the time constraints he had to endure in writing this manuscript with numerous other commitments. However, the review is based on reading the manuscript after publication and not on any involvement in the manuscript's design or preparation which were entirely developed by Dr. Franks.

The book traces the history of change in the mining industry, particularly the advent and impact of the Mining, Minerals and Sustainable Development Initiative at the turn of the millennium. An admirable feature of this book is the due respect the author gives to internal and external agents of corporate change (business leaders as well as civil society). There is considerable reliance on long-form interviews with key decision-makers in the volume which gives the monograph some authenticity but also makes the book a bit too journalistic in cadence. A scholar of Dr. Frank's eminence could have provided more direct analysis of the quotations which would have given more depth and critical appraisal for the reader. Instead, we have a measured and guarded exposition of change agents in the sector. The text itself is also rather short for the price and it seems as though Dr. Franks could have brought forth his own analysis and engagement in another hundred pages which were never written. There were also many comparisons with corporate change in other sectors which could have been drawn upon. Indeed, an entire genre of literature on corporate change exists that could have given more weight to the analysis. For example, Jeanie Daniel Duck's classic book "The Change Monster" (also written for a general non-academic audience) could have been consulted or parallels with the change of companies such as General Electric and 3M deserved some attention (particularly since both had major mining interests too).

Despite these deficiencies, the narrative is nicely formulated with catchy chapter titles and captions and will be engaging for a non-specialist. Business leaders with limited time would find the book an easy read but should recognize that there is more than meets the eye on the topic. Invite Dr. Franks for a conversation and that would augment the somewhat confined narrative within the pages. Finally, a major industrial change issue that is missed in the book, but which the author had the ability to delve into, is how the recycling sector and the circular economy has the potential to transform the mining industry. Ultimately, the mining sector will need to reinvent itself as a material service provider and there are still many more bold decisions to be made in this major corporate transformation. I look forward to following future writings of Dr. Franks who has much potential as a scholar and practitioner beyond this book as well.

Informative, Engaging and Most Enjoyable

There was never a dull moment while I was reading this fascinating book. The author gallops through the history of science and technology concentrating on famous ideas/inventions/discoveries that were either dismissed or ridiculed by contemporary authorities.

The topics vary enormously: from technological breakthroughs and accidental inventions to popular books, blockbuster movies and ridiculous (but highly successful) inventions plus much more. In each case, the highlights of the lives of the individuals involved are briefly described as are their campaigns to push their inventions/ideas through, often with great difficulty and usually culminating in outstanding financial successes.

I did find the odd error. On page 20, the author states that Rontgen discovered x rays in 1875. Actually, that discovery was made in 1895. Also, on page 60, while discussing Marie Curie’s discoveries, polonium is specifically highlighted. Although technically correct, the Curies’ most famous discovery was radium, but that was not stated. There may be other errors or omissions in the book; however, I am not as familiar with the other topics to have noticed any.

Despite these very minor shortcomings, I found this book very difficult to put down, often finding myself laughing out loud. The author writes in a clear, friendly, accessible and often humorous style. This book should be a pleasure to read for anyone interested in some of the less glamorous aspects of history’s great inventions and their inventors – all written in a most painless and enjoyable prose.

DR. MARTIN BLANK is an expert on the health-related effects of electromagnetic fields and has been studying the subject for more than thirty years. He earned his first PhD from Columbia University in physical chemistry and his second from the University of Cambridge in colloid science. From 1968 to 2011, he taught as an associate professor at Columbia University, where he now acts as a special lecturer. Dr. Blank has served as an invited expert regarding EMF safety for Canadian Parliament, for the House Committee on Natural Resources and Energy (HNRE) in Vermont, and for Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court.

A great overview of a complex subject

So many books on electromagnetic radiation (EMF/EMR) are either too complex, or too simple. Dr. Blank cuts an effective path through a very complicated subject, explaining what EMF actually is & what current science tells us about the known health effects that result from EMF exposures. Interestingly, there are a couple of chapters that do a really effective job explaining how industry (particularly the telecommunications sector) effectively co-opts much of the science through control of the funding channels. And, most importantly, Dr. Blank explains how EMF is different from other health risks (such as air pollution), and how you can take advantage of these differences to minimize your personal risks from EMF exposures even absent changes to EMF emission regulations. This is probably the single most effective and digestible overview of EMF available for average consumers of modern technology.

A wakeup call about Electromagnetic fields and the adverse effects

Dr. Martin Blank, an expert on the health-related effects of electromagnetic fields, has been studying the subject for more than thirty years. He earned his first PhD from Columbia University in physical chemistry and his second from the University of Cambridge in colloid science. From 1968 to 2011, he taught as an associate professor at Columbia University, where he now acts as a special lecturer. Dr. Blank has served as an invited expert regarding EMF safety for Canadian Parliament, for the House Committee on Natural Resources and Energy (HNRE) in Vermont, and for Brazil's Supreme Federal Court. Impressive credentials, a learned man who has dedicated a significant part of his life to inform the public about the inherent risks of electromagnetic radiation, Dr. Blank, in this book, is not an alarmist; he is a seer with a jolly tone to his writing, but what he has to advise us about is certainly serious.

He begins with a discussion of electromagnetic radiation - how it works, the surprising proximity of sources (look up and see the wires overhead, the light bulbs, the microwave ovens, the extension cords, the televisions, computers, etc), and now the plethora of wireless devices that depend on their function from those EM forces filling the air (otherwise we would not be able to use cell phones, wi-fi images, stored songs) exacerbating the dangers.

Tests have been done to show that such electromagnetic radiation causes cancer, brain damage (think Alzheimer's and Lou Gehrig's diseases), infertility, and who can even imagine how much else to the environment (bees, trees, foods, etc). Knowing that the big corporate producers of the ever-expanding wireless devices are not about to let anyone rain on their parade, Dr. Blank simply asks that we all be informed of the possibilities of the effects of carrying around devices in our pockets, on our belts, in purses, or sitting on our desks, and in doing so consider how much we actually need all of the new `advanced forms' we really need. Can we reduce our need and in doing so improve the environment and our health and lifeline? It is a fair question and an important consideration. Moderation is a rare term these days, but perhaps we need to address that state. It should be imperative that everyone read this easy to comprehend book and make up our own minds. Martin Blank has done a terrific job at making a complex subject accessible to the lay reader. He speaks with quiet authority on a subject he knows well as one of the world's foremost researchers on EMF/RFs' effects on living cells. His is the work that august groups have looked to for guidance, especially his groundbreaking studies conducted with colleague Reba Goodman on stress protein activation and low-level EMF exposures -- things that are not supposed to happen according to popular physics/engineering wisdom. Better by far to hear from a real expert -- a biologist adept with living systems.

"Overpowered" is the opposite of a Luddite screed. Rather, it is the thoughtful perspective of a respected lifelong professional at the top of his game, still enthralled with the science that captured his imagination as a young scientist. But Dr. Blank understands only too well the implications of our unfettered embrace of technology as he carefully takes the reader through the science in comprehensive, comprehensible ways, leading to intelligent solutions to cut down exposures. He articulates the 'why' as well as the 'what.' Dr. Blank does not shy away from the politics, either. In fact, he has spent much of his career on the frontlines of it.

The book is also a plain, old fashioned 'good read' for professionals and lay readers alike. If you are a healthcare provider wondering why clients increasingly report amorphous life-diminishing symptoms, or someone experiencing such symptoms yourself, or a parent wondering why a child comes home with headaches after being in wifi'ed classrooms, this is the book for you. Of the several books out there on this subject today, "Overpowered" has the best bang-for-the-buck, packed in a relatively slim volume. Readers won't regret buying this one and will undoubtedly refer to it again and again. Bound to become a classic in the genre, it is highly recommended. Seven Stories Press was smart to publish it -- right when we need it most...
