Can't escape from this book! Its puzzles are chasing me!

This book will destroy me completely!! Why? Because I just can't stop solving all these puzzles and challenging my memory. I am am just really busy with work lately and this book has taken all my attention. Solving puzzles for me has always been a great diversion! When I am on them, I am 100% focused trying to figure out the solution. Here you will find a nice collection of varied puzzles. I learned a lot. I was not aware of the memory pallace. That's a great technique! Excellent book. Looking forward to more like these! Thanks, Angelo.

Excellent book for improving your memory!

This book is loaded with great tips on how to improve your memory; one's that I've never really contemplated. I've recently gotten into meditation and have looked at it as a way to slow down but did really correlate that with the added benefit of improving my memory. It only makes sense that it would have an impact though! Of course more sleep, memory exercises and note taking is good but the perspective I gained from this book as it relates to meditation is something I won't forget! ;)
The author does a nice job with their take-action approach. And I like the examples used. They certainly jogged my thinking forward. In particular the Memory exercise was my favorite.
This book provides a great primer on some of the techniques use, and it is more up to date as far as 21st century ways of training your mind I quite enjoyed it!

Challenge Accepted!

I've always thought that I have a really good memory and was a bit smug with the book thinking 'oh this'll be easy'. I was wrong. Apparently, I am good in a certain type of quick memorization only and there are a lot of other ways to improve my memory. The book explained what type of memory technique is effective in different situations. The games inside the book are definitely challenging and I had to go 2 to 3 times on some of them until I got them perfectly. It's very fun and with constant practice, it really is probable to improve your memory as you unconsciously nitpick clues in your surroundings. Highly recommended!

Excellent, long-anticipated sequel to One Second After

I’ll confess to a bias up front before getting into the review. I live in Black Mountain, North Carolina, the village where Forstchen has set his story about a community struggling to survive after an EMP attack devastates the United States. Forstchen truly captured the feel of our town, the people, the way they would react, the way they think and talk, and how a small Southern town could indeed band together to help each other get through a crisis. He did his research well on that.

This book is definitely another five star job by Forstchen. The sequel, One Second After deals with the first year after an EMP attack and focuses on how the total destruction of our electrical infrastructure would forever change our lives, and the reality of how so many experts predict that at least 4 out 5 Americans would die in the months after our nation is destroyed by the detonation of just several small nuclear weapons about the atmosphere that then wipes out our electrical infrastructure. One Year After picks the story up, literally, a year after the end of his first novel. The author explores “what happens next,” a question nearly all fans of his first book have asked. It is one thing to survive that first terrible year, but Forstchen now takes us to the next level. . .we survived but now what in hell do we do? Do we continue to let our nation slide into a final decline and oblivion? Do we hand off to our children and grandchildren a society left in wreckage, the way the descendants of what had been the Roman empire gazed at the ruins about them as they lived in squalor? Or do we band together and start to try and rebuild?
The fascinating question Forstchen presents is exactly how do we rebuild? Do we sit back and wait for FEMA to one day show up and rescue us (it is obvious that Forstchen must have been thinking about Katrina and Sandy when dealing with this question) or do we roll up our sleeves and get to work? One plot detail I will give away, which is not a spoiler, is that the main character, John Matherson, is suffering from an infected tooth when the story opens. Anyone who harbors some crazed nostalgia that life must have been simpler and thus happier back in the “good ole days” should read this book while suffering from a tooth ache and contemplate how such things were dealt with! That alone leads Forstchen, who has a Ph.D. in history with a specialization in the history of technology, into an interesting subplot asking if enough local knowledge is out there to make anesthesia, pain killers, and the antibiotics we take for granted.

It is but one of many questions Forstchen presents to us to ponder on, and shows yet again how we take the wonders of modern technology for granted. The book also moves more into political questions of how to rebuild rather than the harsher issues of brutal day to day survival he wrote about in book one, but that I see as a strength as he opens up the next chapter of the story about the town of Black Mountain and can it survive.

A final political observation, a reality check here. Read the novels, then read the news. Is our country really going to turn a blind eye to the nuclear ambitions of Iran? An EMP hit is a first strike weapon. The results of its use, literally thousands of times worse than what we endured on 9/11. Our leaders, (who would be safe in their bunkers if we were ever attacked) actually tell us not to worry about the deal with Iran? Does anyone recall twenty years ago when the leadership then said not to worry about North Korea’s nuclear ambitions? I am writing this review on Sept. 16th, and just this morning I read where North Korea announced it is building yet more bombs and will soon demonstrate its ICBM capacity. ICBM plus a nuclear warhead equals EMP, which equals the nightmare Forstchen is trying to warn us about. Read and take heed.

Well Worth Waiting For!

Since I read "One Second After", I've been hoping for a sequel. I really wanted to find out how the characters fared as time went by, as well as the evolution of the local politics. It was exciting to be taken back to Black Mountain, NC to continue the adventure. As usual, Forstchen kept me riveted to the book and introduces new and interesting characters. Old enemies become new friends. New conflicts. New battles. I enjoyed the strife between our heroes and the "Big City" of Ashville. The locals are faced with possible anarchy or fascist rule. Stcik together or perish fighting among themselves.
Overall, this book was an enjoyable experience. I will mention that, inevitably, "One Year After" does not have the same level of impact on current society as "One Second After". The naration of the actual effects of an EMP attack on modern day North Carolina was very powerful. But the continuation of the story allows us to follow characters that we already know and love. Or hate.
Forstchen has a gift for bringing characters to life and creating realistic interpersonal adversities. His battle scenes always keep me on the edge of my seat. I always feel like I'm part of his stories.
If you haven't read "One Second After" yet, by all means do. If you have then you will want to follow up with "One Year After".

Another Excellent Novel

I was surprised when I started this book, and found that the title meant it was picking up one year after the first novel, One Second After, ended. I thought it would start where the first one ended, one year after the EMP attacks. But it did fill in the missing year along the way, as it spun another masterful tale about John Matherson and his town struggling to survive and rebuild. It is full of action scenes and battles.

This novel is also full of well-developed, real persons who struggle with their own weaknesses as they strive to rebuild their corner of the world. But it also goes much deeper than many other post-apocalyptic action novels. John's analysis of the progress on the electrical generation and the telephone switchboard at the end are very perceptive. Similarly, the actions of John and the town to try to save the wounded survivors that they were just fighting demonstrated a real depth of character, which contrasted sharply with the shallow, selfish character of the district administrator.

It’s a great feeling to have a new bike. Enjoy the pride of ownership, turn a blind eye to the instant depreciation of a vehicle that comes with knobby tires, and be aware of what that brand new bike needs.

PREP Most bikes need more grease on the steering stem, linkage, and swingarm bearings. While you’re at it, work a dab of anti-seize grease into the rear axle adjustment bolt threads.

MAINTENANCE Air filter oil migrates down. Check that the top of the filter is tacky with oil and re-oil it with air filter oil if it is dry on the top. Stock chains stretch quickly, so put on a top-of-the-line chain right away to save money on sprockets in the long run.

BREAK-IN A good common-sense break-in is to give the engine a heat cycle. Get it up to operating temperature on the stand, then let it cool. Don’t lug the engine in a gear too high for the first rides or scream it in a gear too low. Suspension breaks in, too. Watch the shock sag and keep it adjusted where you want it.

I bought this for my 6 yr old Nephew who is OBSESSED with all things dirt bike. I could not figure out what to get him for Christmas and this was a HUGE hit! It details how to build a bike and lots of great instructions, colors, pictures appropriate for my nephew or adults. Perfect hit!!

Great book. Content is very good, book is very well put together, metal corners and pages are a nice thick paper. I was very surprised with how nice the book was when it arrived. I was wanting a hardcover version, after this showed up I realize why hardcovers wasn't an option, totally not needed. Would buy again.

This was exactly what i was looking for.
If you're looking for insite on mechanical DIY ins and outs of basic dirt bike machanics and part replacements.. it has alot of info on that. Which was y i purchased it.
But it also has alot of other info about dirt bike n the sport and selecting the right bike gear tools etc.
Its a good buy especially for the price.
I still havent found a book that goes in depth with top end rebuilds. If anyone knows any feel free to let me know. Thanks

I was looking for another thriller to get stuck into when I came across The Boat Man and I liked the idea of the protagonist's partner being a dog in the story. This is the first Dustin Stevens book I have read but it will definitely not be the last. The story is brilliantly written with plenty of suspense, mystery, twists and turns along with enough action to keep you entertained throughout. Detective Reed Mattox is definitely bearing some scars from the death of his partner and it does color his actions in the story as he and his new partner (his K9 unit assigned dog) work to solve the mystery surrounding the bodies piling up in his city. Overall a well written and gripping book that is hard to put down. highly recommended for any thriller fans.

Thrillers are some of my favorite reads because I love to be pulled into a story and through intense situations, all in the safety of my own home. I've read some pretty good ones lately and can now add to that list author Dustin Stevens' "The Boat Man". The story of Detective Reed Mattox, who is attempting to lay low after the death of his partner, yet is pulled into a pretty intense serial murder investigation. The killer is called The Boat Man and is name after Charon from Greek mythology, who carries souls across the rivers Styx into the world of the dead. This is essentially a story of vigilante justice and the mystery involved is a very good one. I found the read to be both intense and very enjoyable. Would definitely recommend and I now plan on checking out some of this author's other novels.

About the Author
Born and raised in Oakland, California, Andrew Michler, LEED AP BD+C, CPHC, found his way to a pine forest in the Colorado Rockies where he has lived off-grid since 1995. Merging work in design/construction, visual arts, and sustainable building research he has written extensively about sustainability in architecture. His research has also led him to investigate Passive House. He designed and built the first international certified Passive House in Colorado which is free of foam and other toxic materials. Michler consults, through his firm Baosol llc, on low impact and adaptive building design and materials. His wide-ranging exploration of design and environmental impacthas led him all over the world. Exploring the edges of contemporary environmental architecture has helped Michler come to terms with the complex relationship between our built and natural environments.

Andrew Michler's book is an artistic achievement as he takes the reader to seven areas of the world where he describes architecture's place in a changing climate environment. Michler traveled extensively to interview architects and photograph their buildings that are a response to place, regional sources and materials. The interviews with architects are a fascinating and insightful look at their philosophies and challenges as they bring new approaches to local sustainable projects. The photographs are stunning, capturing the essence of each building's unique design that reflects the place where it is. This book should be required reading for any architectural program that wants to understand the future of creating buildings that reflect design and not flair.

A very smart writer, Michler has placed himself in the middle of the action to move architecture into true sustainability of materials and balance with the climate. In this book he has written about his first hand perceptions of architectural projects from all over the world, backed by years of writing and contemplating these issues. He questions the need for architects to develop signature styles; right on the edge of popular building science, Michler, suggests that architectural design should integrate an efficient use of resources as well as an exacting knowledge of the local weather patterns. Great pics and a well designed book too!

A Century of Missed Opportunities

There’s a building at 2nd Avenue and 33rd street with a plaza in front, it’s open to the public and very popular with smokers. I never could figure out why anyone would waste the space on a plaza; surely the owners must have lost money on the unused space. But a according to this book, the zoning rules required the building to have the plaza; the city wanted to use it for a subway entrance! The building was from the 1970’s, a time when Mayor Lindsay and Governor Rockefeller had planned the 2nd Avenue Subway line, all the way to downtown Manhattan. It would be almost 40 years before it was built, a delay that resulted from a combination of financial troubles and a fractured city government. Meanwhile, the plaza remains

Joseph Raskin has opened a big can of worms with this book. He brings to light the massive number of subway lines that were planned throughout the area but stayed just that; plans and nothing more. Never mind the 2nd Avenue subway line, that’s been in the works for years. I’m taking about a subway line that would’ve run all the way to the East Bronx. If you’ve ever been there (which is unlikely unless you live there) you’ll know you can’t get there without a car. There was even a plan to build a subway line straight across the city to the Hudson River.

Raskin’s research for this book places most of the blame on Mayors who didn’t care for the subway that much. As the city expanded outward, there was a push to build more roadways for the cars and less emphasis on public transport. And what could exemplify the “subways don’t count” attitude like the great Robert Moses, who wrecked the Bronx with his Cross Bronx Expressway? Perhaps the blame should fall on the people as well; more and more New Yorkers drank the cool aid about the “house and car” dream after WWII. There was, however, a movement to build houses on the route of the unplanned subways. Housing was built on Burke Avenue, just because the builders anticipated a subway line going that way.

This book should be required reading for a course on NYC history (if such a course exists) because public transit is a major part of life in this city. It ranks up there with Robert Caro’s The Power Broker and Jane Jacobs Death and Life of American Cities. I applaud Raskin’s effort in writing this book; his massive research has paid off.

Missed Opportunity

I've been waiting for a book like this for a long time, and I was so excited to learn of it. And so my disappointment in the actual result was profound. While it's clear that Raskin knows the stories of the unbuilt lines in tremendous (even excessive) detail, the organization of the book is baffling, and the lack of maps and legible diagrams is unforgivable--especially since Raskin refers to the lines by their historic names (e.g., the Sea Beach Line instead of the N). This is an understandable decision, but it must make the book daunting for those who haven't internalized the old names. A list of lines and names in the back helps a little, but a map or series of maps would have made a huge difference.

I know maps are expensive and that old ones often don't reproduce well. But Raskin needed to make the investment in new drawings to illustrate much of what he talks about. I'm very familiar with New York's transit geography, but I repeatedly had to go to other sources to figure out what he was referring to. The narrative structure is equally baffling, with stories coming and going in no particular chronological order. I can't imagine what a more casual reader would make of this.

I really wanted to love this book, but I think only the most diehard of NYC railfans will get through this happily.

good thorough book

A thoroughly researched book rich in footnotes. The theme is largely political showing the conflicts between proposed routes, construction (subway vs. el), real estate developers vs. riders, private management (IRT and BMT) vs. city constructed and managed. (IND), and the conflicts between state and city. There were endless and enervating political delays which delayed construction of new routes for decades. The impacts of the great depression and WW2 are well drawn. One is impressed at the power held by various mayors, Robert Moses, and administrators who were advancing their own political agendas at the expense of sound economic and engineering considerations. These factors persist to this day. It is a wonder that the LIRR to the eastside, the extension of the 7 to the westside , and the initial phase of the 2nd avenue subway are underway despite the political and economic environment.

On the negative side, the maps and figures are often poor copies barely readable with a magnifying glass. I wish for clearer and, perhaps, redrawn supporting artifacts.
