Traces the long standing effort to build a canal across Florida
"Offers timeless lessons about pork-barrel politics and the power of citizen-environmentalism. Most important, it reminds us that today’s economic coup may well be tomorrow's environmental crisis."--Cynthia Barnett, author of Mirage
"Ties the exploitation of the Ocklawaha to Florida history across nearly two centuries. Moreover, they bring to life the personalities of canal supporters and detractors, including such dynamic individuals as Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Claude Pepper, and Marjorie Harris Carr."--Frederick Rowe Davis, author of The Man Who Saved Sea Turtles
For centuries, men dreamed of cutting a canal across the Florida peninsula, despite the enormous technological and financial challenges of doing so. Heedless of environmental concerns, groups of water transportation advocates consistently lobbied the federal government to connect the Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico, a project intended to place Florida at the very center of American commerce and prosperity.
Drawing on a wealth of primary sources, Steven Noll and David Tegeder trace the twists and turns of the project through the years. The story of the Cross Florida Barge Canal, crucial to twentieth-century Florida history, is complex, featuring competing interests amidst the changing political landscape of modern Florida. Ditch of Dreams reveals much about the clashing visions of progress, economic growth, and environmental preservation in the fragile ecosystem of Florida, while exploring the tangled web of politics, influence, and power in the Sunshine State.
The history of the canal is not just a story of Florida’s past, but a compelling lesson for its future.

Review
“A compelling narrative of the competing visions for Florida’s future, offering subtle insights into the contemporary politics of land use, federalism, pork-barrel politics, and the evolution of environmentalism.”—Enterprise and Society
“Highly recommended.”—Choice
“Touches every era and most great figures of Florida politics.”—Daytona Beach News-Journal
“Reveals as much about modern-day Florida as it does the state’s past—particularly when it comes to competing visions of progress, growth, preservation, and the use of political power to achieve those goals.”—Florida Trend
“Reads like an epic, a tale spanning centuries and filled with avarice, courage, determination, hubris, and a heroine out of central casting. Steven Noll and David Tegeder leave no stone unturned in their outstanding rendering of this most peculiar episode of Florida’s often-shameful environmental history.”—Tampa Bay History
“Tells the story of the transformation of twentieth-century American liberalism, the fracturing of the New Deal coalition, and the birth of the environmental movement.”—New Books in American Studies
“Noll and Tegeder do an excellent job of placing the canal within the context of local, state, and national politics.”—Journal of Southern History

Terrific Book On a subject that was hard to get the real story on
By Douglas R. Brown
Steven Noll & David Tegeder did a great job in this new book. I live in Ocala and have a vaction home in Crystal River which is a few miles from the completed western section of the barge Canal,Inglis Florida. Ocala has the Ocklawaha river which I have been on many times, which was the main contention the enviromentalist fought the canal over. I have also fished on the Rodman reservoir and have been to Palatka, Santos and many of the places listed in the book, so it was great to read the history about the Cross Florida barge canal and how it will now be turned into an extensive Florida park system. I have crossed over the bridge at 19 in Inglis many times and have asked many people the purpose of it and the lock system there, and each time I usually get a different answer, this was a wonderful read and answered many questions about the history of the canal and Florida history.Great Job !!

Little Know History of North Florida's Big Dig Project
By J. Wood Jr.
As young adults, my fiancé and I would often go canoeing in the Silver River east of Ocala, Florida. The water was crystal clear and the canopied river created a setting that was relaxing, excitingly rustic, and romantic. Often we would paddle upstream to the park and dodge the glass-bottomed boats at the Silver Springs Amusement Park to peer into the deeps springs, and photograph alligators and monkeys along the way. The initial paddle upstream allowed the return trip to be a leisurely drift on the powerful currents of the river.
To begin our adventures we would put in near the confluence of the Silver River and the Ocklawaha River. As we would turn in to the parking area of the public park, we would often look due east to the seemingly giant span of the bridge over the Ocklawaha River on State Road 40. Occasionally we would drive over the bridge and marvel at the enormity of the structure relative to the diminutive size of the river it crossed. My parents (both native Floridians) provided enough of an explanation of the bridge that I knew it was part of the once proposed Cross-Florida Barge Canal, but I never knew how the plans for the Canal had developed over more than a century, nor how those plans were ultimately defeated to leave only oversized infrastructure as reminders of the grandeur of the plans. Ditch of Dreams is a very well researched and written account of the Canal's history from its inception to its ultimate defeat. It not only tells the story in vivid chronological detail, but it also allows the reader to recognize many similarities to current stimulus projects, political agendas, and environmental movements. The inclusion of so many of the colorful political characters across the state added significantly to the picture of the political climate during the various incarnations of the project.
For those interested in the history of north central Florida, the environmental movement, the beautiful Silver and Ocklawaha rivers, and being responsible stewards of the natural environment, this book is a must read.

A fascinating read for any who want another aspect of Florida's history
By Midwest Book Review
A canal through Florida draws radically different actions. "Ditch of Dreams: The Cross Florida Barge Canal and the Struggle for Florida's Future" discusses the cross-Florida canal and the debate that has raged on for nearly a century regarding the potential canal. Halted in 1971, the canal's status is officially halted, but there is still debate around it to this day. An intriguing look into the state of the project and impact of such an undertaking, "Ditch of Dreams" is a fascinating read for any who want another aspect of Florida's history.
