MiGs over Nevada is a nonfiction account of Area 51 becoming the venue for the United States exploiting foreign aircraft, stealth, and radar. In 1955, the CIA chose Area 51 as its top-secret venue to test flies the U-2 reconnaissance plane. The CIA code-named it Project AQUATONE. In 1959, The CIA upgraded Area 51 to test fly its Mach 3, high-flying A-12 reconnaissance plane code named Project OXCART to replace the U-2. To conduct these tests, the CIA assembled a team of specialists known as Special Projects. In 1968, the CIA's Special Projects team provided the technology and radar systems to technically and tactically exploits the Soviet MiG-21 Fishbed code-named Project HAVE DOUGHNUT. The CIA's Special Projects then exploited the Soviet MiG-17 Fresco in Projects HAVE DRILL and HAVE FERRY. This was the genesis of the Navy's Top Gun Weapons School and the Air Force's Red Flag exercises that continue today. Decades of follow-on exploitation projects followed at Area 51. The author was a member of this Special Projects team more highly classified than the Manhattan Project that developed the atomic bomb. In October 2013, the CIA declassified these projects and approved the author's printing of this book. MiGs over Nevada does more than document the exploitation of the MiG-17F Fresco C, MiG-21F Fishbed, and the MiG-23 Flogger. It carries the reader through the evolution of Area 51 that made it the venue for the CIA’s U-2 Project AQUATONE, A-12 Project OXCART, for exploiting Soviet MiG aircraft, and the nations black projects that followed and continue today. It tells how these projects inspired decades of exploitation projects that morphed into MiG operations known as the Red Eagles and the Red Hats. MiGs over Nevada describes Area 51 operations where a small group of CIA personnel and contract specialists served and supported customers such as the US Air Force, the US Navy, and numerous corporate entities seeking technological tradecraft existing only at Area 51. The book tells how living under a cloak of secrecy affected the family of one whose career path made him a member of this secret cadre for test flying spy planes, and exploiting enemy technology.

About the Author
TD Barnes, author and entrepreneur, grew up on a ranch at Dalhart, Texas, and graduated from Mountain View High School, Oklahoma. He then embarked on a ten-year military career. He served as an army intelligence officer in Korea. Following 2 ½ years of radar and missile electronics schooling, he taught foreign students the Nike radar and missile system, and deployed with a Hawk missile battalion during the Soviet Iron Curtain threat. He attended Artillery OCS, where an injury ended his military career. Barnes’ career included serving as a field engineer at the NASA High Range in Nevada for the X-15, XB-70, lifting bodies, and lunar landing vehicles. He participated in the NASA NERVA project at Jackass Flats, Nevada; and served in Special Projects at Area 51. Barnes later formed a family oil and gas exploration company, drilling and producing oil and gas and mining uranium and gold. Barnes is currently the CEO of Startel, Inc., a landowner, and actively mining landscape rock and gold in Nevada. He is also the president of Roadrunners Internationale, an association of Area 51 veterans. Formerly, he was the first executive director of the Nevada Aerospace Hall of Fame. Two National Geographic Channel documentaries: “Area 51 Declassified” and “CIA - Secrets of Area 51” have featured Barnes. Numerous documentaries produced by the History Channel, the Discovery Channel, the Travel Channel, and others also feature Barnes. The Annie Jacobsen book, Area 51 Declassified, also features his career. Barnes is the author of two nonfiction books, MiGs Over Nevada, and Odyssey To Area 51, a 3 novel series about EMP and nuclear war, and a 3-novel series about Islamic Jihad in America. Barnes lives in Henderson, Nevada.

interesting but ultimately disappointing

Although the author had a very different perspective than the other authors that have taken on this subject, he didn't do himself any favors by relying so heavily on the evaluation reports. This is sad because what glimpses he does give of Groom Lake (between huge chunks of the reports) is fascinating. My Kindle copy had many, many typos evidently caused by the digitizing process - both unfortunate, annoying and preventable. Both for this and general readability this work could have greatly benefited from the efforts of a good editor!

Some interesting insights and nuggets from testing the MiGs at Area 51. Written in a conversational style, it is somewhat difficult to follow the story at times. Much of the book seems to be straight cut-and-paste from official evaluation reports. Any second edition would benefit from an editor and proofreader.

The testing of captured MiGs (unmasking the boogie man)

An interesting read for a very specific subject. The details of the MiG testing are rather technical, but it's interesting to read the history of the projects and the back story on Groom Lake (Area 51). The MiG-21 was much more myth than reality, once the Americans got their hands on it, they learned it's weakness and how to exploit them. In combat armed with this information the Navy and the Air Force would soundly trounce them, and the Vietnamese would give up attempting to dogfight with them. Their final kills came from ambush attacks and very rarely from mixing it up.
