Air-to-air photographer and aerospace journalist Keith Wilson is the author of Red Arrows in Camera (2012)and RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight in Camera (2013), RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Manual (2014) and Avro Shackleton Manual (2015) for Haynes. He lives in Cambridgeshire.

The Avro Shackleton is one of those fascinating "cult" airplanes that never really gets it's due. Designed after World War II to hunt Soviet submarines, the aircraft later functioned as a low-level medium bomber, troop transport, and Airborne Early Warning plane. The last examples soldiered on until the early 90s - not bad for a descendant of the Lancaster! Although this book is written entirely by former Shackleton crewmen, and provides a number of fascinating asides, it doesn't deliver the in-depth technical details I've come to expect from this series. Roughly half of the book is a potted history of the Shackleton in war and peace, the different variants, and it's rebirth as an AEW aircraft. These sections are decently written, but again, aren't really what you'd expect from a "workshop manual."

Visually, it's pretty good. The photographs are numerous and nicely reproduced. There are plenty of excellent color photographs depicting the interior arrangements of preserved Shackletons, along with vintage "in action" shots and images of WR963 (currently undergoing restoration to flying condition) undergoing maintenance. The lack of diagrams is a real let down - there are eight in the entire book, including the obligatory Mike Badrocke cutaway. Being only 20 pages, the "anatomy" chapter is rather sketchy, with major aircraft systems receiving only a paragraph or two each. The chapters on flying and maintaining the Shackleton are a bit better, with some in-depth procedural details focusing on WR963. Finally, there's an interesting chapter on surviving aircraft, along with a useful table giving the serial number, date of first flight, and fate of every "Shack."

Although it has it's moments, this "manual" is a bit of a missed opportunity on the whole. I feel bad saying this, because Keith Wilson and his co-authors were deeply involved with the Shackleton and clearly loved their time with it. I would have loved to see some information on early Cold War anti-submarine tactics, along with detailed descriptions and diagrams of the aircraft's inner workings, and a separate chapter devoted to the Griffon 57 engines. This book is a pretty decent introduction to the Shackleton, but for a "workshop manual," the lack of technical detail is sorely disappointing.

Dirt: A Love Story by Barbara Richardson is a very highly recommended anthology for dirt lovers everywhere. For those of us who love soil/dirt, let's speak the truth right now. As Jana Richman so eloquently points out: "Gorgeous, sexy people dig in dirt. People who age well. People who collect beauty in the creases of crow’s feet. People with sturdy hands and good minds."

In Dirt thirty-six artists, scientists, and renowned writers discuss and extol the virtues of soil, dirt, and the importance of it. The anthology contains essays by "writers, travelers, biologists, sculptors, green architects, terrestrial ecologists, geomorphologists, soil scientists, environmental economists, Sufi teachers, medicine women, farmers and the daughters and sons of farmers, and people who generally like to live close to the land." For all of them, well, us, the truth is that dirt makes us unaccountably happy.

This collection is divided into five sections. The first section "Land Centered," consists of essays by "flagrant dirt fanatics." The second section, "Kid Stuff" explores our early contact with dirt. The third is “Dirt Worship,” on claiming our ancestry with the dirt. The fourth is "Dirt Facts," which offers insights into the scientific processes within dirt. The fifth and last section, "Native Soil," talks about the challenge of loving difficult ground.

Those of us who love dirt and growing things understand the sentiments of Deborah Koons Garcia: "Soil is one of the true miracles of this planet." Everything that has ever been on the earth eventually returns to the dirt. Ashes to ashes, dust to dust is a fact. The transformation and processes to return to dirt encompass changes and processes that few people think about.

I know my love of gardening and landscaping seems to be inborn, an innate instinct that can only be met by digging in the dirt. The dirt calls out to me as loudly as it calls out to my children. When they were young, they were mud babies. They needed to play in the mud, getting covered head to toe. No scolding could keep them from this preoccupation with dirt. Perhaps there is an explanation for this. Peter Heller notes that, "I read that dirt has pheromones, or something, that come out of the ground and mix with our endocrine systems and give us a sense of well-being. In this way dirt is like potatoes and tobacco and opium."

This is a wonderfully organized and well thought out compilation of writing about dirt. I thoroughly enjoyed it!

A woman named Dona Blair sold me these acres for 7 percent down and a signed copy of my first book, Cowboys are My Weakness, because, she said, she liked the idea of me, and 7 percent down was all I had. I didn't have a job, either, or three pages of a new book to hold together. But my father was a hustler and he taught me to be a hustler and so for the next twenty years, I accepted every writing assignment and every teaching assignment that I was offered, and several more that I wasn't offered but had to go out and rustle up. I didn't sleep much in those two decades, but I love what I do for a living, and I am not sure our thirties and forties are supposed to be for sleeping anyhow."

Pam Houston knows how to tell a story, as do most of the contributors to Dirt: A Love Story, from Barbara Richardson's Preface, "The God of Dirt"—"You can't fool dirt. Nor can you escape it... Dirt anchors us all in reality"—to Atina Diffley's triumphant final piece, "Soil Versus Oil—Kale Versus Koch," which tells how she and her Minnesota community defeated Koch Industries' proposal to bulldoze a crude oil pipeline right through the rich soil of her family's organic farm.

Other standouts include CSA farmer and author Kayann Short's thoughtful essay, "Soil Versus Dirt"; memoirist and farmer's daughter Julene Bair's quietly sensuous "Dirt Princess"; novelist BK Loren's visionary "Dreaming in Dirt"; "Born Again" by author Donald G. Schueler, among the most wryly funny of Southern writers; filmmaker Deborah Koons Garcia's "Seeing Dirt"; novelist Laura Pritchett's self-deprecating and redemptive "Hostile Takeovers'; and "City Dirt," with its gospel-style call-and-response by urban farmer Karen Washington.

Dirt is divided into thematic sections: "Land Centered" from writers whose lives are rooted in dirt, "Kid Stuff" about childhood dirt experiences' "Dirt Worship" on taking dirt love into adulthood; the science of dirt in "Dirt Facts"; and "Native Soil," on loving and defending the ground beneath our feet. It's a natural scheme with only one relatively minor drawback: most of the science voices fall in one section, slowing the melodic pace of the anthology. Scientists often don't learn how to communicate compellingly, and that's tragic, because their work is crucial to our lives and our understanding of this astonishingly complex and animate planet.

Overall, Dirt showcases an outstanding chorus of voices, allowing them to intertwine, resonate and amplify each other and build to a kind of lyrical crescendo that will leave readers eager to get out and get down in their own dirt, the lively soil that lives beneath all our feet.

Windows to a Universe Below

I can't remember the last time a book had such an immediate impact on my life. I was caught up in all the usual daily cares, chilled out and played when I could, and whenever I got the chance I would marvel at a nature I thought I knew. Now I'm aware of an epic, restless universe underfoot as well as up in the sky - and even though it's just this thin skin on top of solid rock, it now seems just as mysterious and full of marvels.

It even transformed my idea of what a book is made of, what a book can be. A friend and colleague noticed I had left my copy open and resting face down on a shelf, bending the pages and spine. She said if it were hers I would be punished. I resisted. I told her it was a book I needed to work with. It's a book that demands the reader to get down and dirty with. As the joke escalated, I realized it isn't a book that sits well with looking pretty and untouched on a shelf, but is best handled with dirty fingers and grappled with in the mud.

In a moment of exuberant fervor that came from I know not where, I told her I would show her exactly how I needed to get down in the dirt with this particular book, opened the door, and threw it thirty feet into the driveway. I went out and threw it another thirty feet onto some gravel, then rubbed the cover in the dirt. That was as far as I took the joke, which was as much a longed-for catharsis as occasion for laughter. I really did have the sense that I was, in some small way, connecting the book - and myself - with its dirty origins. The family dog looked very confused (or maybe envious - who knows?).

That's just one impulse this book has given me. Each has taken root in my imagination, and in my life. I am newly in awe of the epic battles of vast tribes of nematodes; of the animal magnetism that draws micro-organisms we barely understand to the roots of a plant as they meld together into the most immense, intricate and viscous waltz you can imagine and give birth to untold nourishment; of the boundless and eternal connection of dirt with our bodies and our myths. And my book has proved to be as sturdy and strong as the eponymous substance of its title - the spine and cover and pages are intact and ready and just as vivid as when I bought them. One would never guess the trials I put it through, save for a light patina of dirt on the back cover that seems destined to have found its way there.

Plenty of practice questions in the book but online adaptive testing is the REAL deal.

This guide is published by Kaplan publishing, and I consider it supplemental to Kaplan. I took the GMAT after being out of school a few years, and out of touch with Math. Through some practice and the aid of guides I was able to get a 97% percentile score in my first attempt. That seemed like a miracle as the test is so long I would have given up long ago had I not built my test taking stamina.

During my test prep, I purchased and borrowed several materials to help me with my test prep. I had 8 weeks to prep for GMAT with about 6-8 hours per week spent on GMAT prep and practice. You will need more time for applications essays and other research too!

My overall recommendation is to use a maximum of 3 book guides and their online resources. Even 2 book guides will suffice if you read and practice faithfully. The most important thing is to quickly identify your weak sections and specific question types in each section that trip you up. Then spend most of your time improving those areas while slowly building up your test taking rhythm just like you're prepping for a race. The idea is to slowly increase accuracy and speed and hit your peak on the day of your GMAT.

Here's my take on all the other guides, since I did not find Grockit until I had already taken GMAT. I will review this book in the very end -

- The Official GMAT Guide is the BEST for solid advice on how to take the GMAT, give you some ACTUAL GMAT questions and really give you a great overview of the exam. After preparing from that book some parts of the GMAT seemed almost familiar as it closely matched the type of questions you get on the test. I was glad that I'd used the book as much as I did, but since I got it with 4 weeks to go, I hadn't practiced as much. I think I could have got an even better score had I completed the whole book.

- The Kaplan Guide was my #2 in terms of the advice on how to tackle different questions. The first practice test that I took after being out of school for years brought me to my knees and helped me realize that I had forgotten more than I remembered. From that point, doing the practice exams and using the online resources really helped improve my score.

- My #3 was the online forums that I used to tackle some areas that I wanted to speed up or had problems. Like tough Probability questions. There are many resources out there where you can find a community that is prepping for this exam and they are extremely helpful.

- #4 Cracking the GMAT (Princeton Review Guide) - This one and Kaplan is really a toss-up. I personally think Kaplan had the slight edge on harder questions in the areas I wanted to improve in quantitative sections, so I ranked it higher. GMAT is a progressive test and the more questions you get right, the harder it gets so if you're looking for a top score you want to be familiar with some of the tougher questions.

Now the Grockit. The Grockit is not really a comprehensive guide in terms of GMAT advice but it is great as a supplemental resource when you need additional questions to practice. And the more you practice, the better you get. It's really about doing some questions every day till your speed and skill starts increasing. And this book has some nice questions with the solutions. Some of these stumpers may eat up too much time in the actual test so the more you practice the more you develop the knack and a methodology for tackling these questions.

This book also offers some online resources and a 6 month subscription, this is the REAL deal as it imitates the adaptive nature of the GMAT. My review copy did NOT come with the activation code so I was unable to try the online site. It should offer you questions that get harder as you get better, or simpler if you start missing some. So it really learns your ability, compares your data with other test takers and offers you the most learning for your skill level. IF you don't have to pay any extra cash for this online resource, then this book could end up being a great value as that's the practice that's most valuable for you. Grockit was a silicon valley startup that got acquired by Kaplan, probably because they knew this stuff works.

For comprehensive prep, I would advise you to get the Official Guide or Kaplan to understand the exam, the approaches, and initial testing and then start with this book but mainly the online resources.

If you prep faithfully using all these resources, there is no reason why you wouldn't get the score of your dreams. Remember though, GMAT score is what get you over the threshold, it's your complete application that gets you a "Yes" from admissions. Good Luck!

Explanations in book are acceptable but online version not as useful. 6 month online interactive access (not printable questions

I am on my second kid taking these tests, so a many of these books have been through my house.

This book has the annoying factor I have found common with many of these review books, they tout “x” number of review questions but a large proportion are only available online (usually about 80% of X). For this particular book, the cover screams 1600+ questions, but then in smaller print it notes that 1100 of them are online, leaving 500 for the book.

Online registration requires you to find a certain word on a certain page. You get 6 months of access, which I feel should be longer. A year would be better. They do NOT require all sorts of information (like some other books), only an email address and a password you create. This takes you to a dashboard with the various sections, English, Math, Science and Reading. Clicking on Practice takes you straight into practice questions.
When you do the practice questions (at least in math) you do NOT get the paragraph long explanations that are in the book. It is also confusing, because the correct answer is highlighted in green even if you not answer that choice. You can also do a diagnostic test for each section.

This book does not review concepts. It does provide a short list of concept which are covered on the ACT. This is fine, because the book only promises questions, not review. There is review online, but Khan Academy does a much better job with these concepts and I could not figure out how to access all of the topics. There were some of the listed topics as videos, but others you could not click on. You apparently must pay for this access. Use Khan instead, it is free and better.

I am more qualified to review the math and section than the English section. The explanations for the answers for both the math and science sections were reasonable IF the student already understood the basic concept. In all fairness, to explain what is wrong with each possible answer would take up way too much space. With a paragraph, they generally did an acceptable job.

Personally I prefer ALL the questions in a book, even if that means it is huge and weighs a ton. That way I can check my kid’s answers later and talk to them about why they missed the problem. Or they can come and ask me later. Online means either they do not know why they missed the question, cannot remember what they missed. The short answers given on the online test are not as useful as those in the book.

To Really Learn Their Strategy & To Review You Have To Pay $99 For Online Video Library Access

This is a tricky review to write and due to the title I am rating this book 4 stars = I LIke It. The book title promises 1600 practice test questions and yes, those are in the book. The font and layout is nice and non-cluttered. There is barely any strategy taught in this book, each test section has less than two pages of introduction or tips, then you take the tests. There is no review section as is normal with other test prep books (i.e. Kaplan, Barron's) but the title does not promise any review.

However the online exclusives marketed on the cover are a bit deceptive. By purchasing the book you may register for a free online account. There you can take more quizzes (totaling 1100 more questions) and then it predicts your possible test score. There is an algorithm that leads you to practice taking more and more of the type of questions that you need to practice on, which is great.

If you really want to review and learn the Grockit strategies and tips you will need to pay $99 to unlock the video library. I did not do that so I do not fully understand if other test practice work and what else is available or not available.

The tagline "Grockit does not waste your time" is honestly, what all the companies do, they do a general practice of all topics then they tell you to study and focus on what you don't know. Nothing new there.

Overall this is a slender book of 291 pages which is less intimidating and seems do-able compared to the Kaplan and others on the market.

Disappointing Reproductions

I was quite disappointed. The maps are not only so much reduced as to be mostly illegible, but the reproductions are mediocre, using a relatively coarse half-tone screen and less than vibrant colors. Why reviewers have not noted these limitations is a mystery. Phaidon could and should have done much better -- especially given the Introduction's claim that "this book puts the emphasis back on the experience of viewing rather than of describing. The accompanying photo shows an enlargement of a typical square inch of a reproduction.

Compare, e.g., MoMA's *The Printed Picture* by Richard Benson (2008), whose illustrations are superbly reproduced (even viewed with a powerful loupe the screen is so fine as to be virtually undetectable) and with thumbnail enlargements of small sections in the case of reproductions that had to be much reduced.

I really enjoyed this collection of maps

I really enjoyed this collection of maps. A nice compendium stretching over 2,000 years with 300 maps.
I thought the tick marks like graticules at the top and the bottom of the page to be an unwelcome design choice.

great book, good advice - particularly if you've never taken the exam before

A good book full of tips and a relatable story as one who took the bar exam in California nearly two years ago. I, too, did not graduate from an ABA school. I did take BarBri however. I fell just short of attaining the lofty goal, and am just now back on track to retake again this summer (2014). While I took a similar approach to the exam (I have a boxing background, so I look at the bar exam like a 'fight'), some of the tips she provides sound very helpful - particularly "grouping" of subjects likely to be in crossovers. I recommend reading this book, not only for first timers, but also those retaking the exam. It never hurts to have a fresh perspective, and figuring out ways to increase the odds of passing are what we are all looking for. Thank you for writing this, and your inspirational story to accompany your achievement.

Passing the Bar Exam: An Unconventional Approach

Desiree is one focused author. She is a retired nurse, a workout instructor, and now also a part-time lawyer. She is also my workout instructor. I read the book because of her. I am a retired international finance executive with an MBA. I took the MBA exam so I has an interest in the Law exam. I could hardly put it down. I almost decided to take the law course so I could take the exam following Desiree book. At 76 I was a little long in the tooth for that. The book was written for people taking the law school exam. That was my one criticism Their where a number of terms and techniques that would be familiar to law school students and exam takers that were lost on the ordinary reader. I think Desiree could reach a wider audiance by covering any wider look at the law school and exam process. Never-the-less the book was a gripping read and I would say a must for anyone taking the California Law Exam. For a exam that only passes 40 percent of first time sitters this should certainly substantially increase the success rate. Desiree was in her late 40's with a study at home law degree and a self developed disipline and focused approandach passed one of the toughest bar exams in her first sitting. I would stronly reccomend this book for general reading or as a primer and guide for those who seek success in their law career.

The Bar Exam

A few years ago I toyed with the possibility of going into Law, but decided against it when a friend told me what a lot of work and stress it was, especially with passing the Bar. When I saw this book, I decided to see what actually was called for in order to pass the Bar. It was really a wonderful surprise for me as I poured through the book. Her preparation for the exam itself was incredibly organized. She prepared for every step in advance, and it made such sense. Then I realized that this was really an "unconventional" approach, as one could use the process that she had devised, and it would work for any test or problem - no matter what the subject. It would work even when preparing for a long vacation, or for the coming birth of a new baby!!! Whatever the problem or situation, this approach would be very valuable in meeting one's goal.

Corrections officers test

Time is beginning to draw near for the exam. Are you prepared? Are you mentally prepared for the life of a correctional officer? If not. I highly recommend this EXam study guide, for the corrections officer test. It is well written and formatted. Making it easy for anyone studying for the exam to full comprehend and capture all concepts that will be in the exam.
I love how the first section of the of the book are strategies for all test takers.There are 12 in total. Each of the strategy is broke-down into few sentences for further explanations. Applying these strategies will definitely prove your test score. Regardless, of the topic.
The book covers these topics: The criminal justice system, standards, facility accreditation, male and female populations, deliberate indifference, the turner test, and much more. Every thing that you have covered in your classes is listed here.
Each topic is broke-down into sections. Each section is design to explain the information being presented with extreme ease. For everyone and anyone to fully comprehend the concept of the topics. Definitely covers everything that should be on the exam

Great information in the book, but the practice test is too easy

[I received this product for free in exchange for my honest review of the product. This has, in absolutely no way whatsoever, affected my review of the product, nor has it swayed my opinion of the product or its value.]

This book is not very large -- only 61 pages -- and is divided into four simple sections.

The first section is the "Quick Overview" section. This section is very brief. It just gives a quick overview of the exam and how to use this book to prepare for it.

The second section is a selection of 15 different test taking tips, along with a few test taking myths, such as the assumption that tests often have patterns in them that, if you can just find them, will help you answer the rest of the questions. This is, of course, erroneous, but some people need to read that in a book to actually believe it.

The third section is the most detailed section. It is the section that actually breaks down everything about the corrections officer exam. This section is DEFINITELY a five star section. If I had based my entire review off of this section, alone, this book would have very easily merited five stars. It is very detailed -- very in-depth. It covers everything you could possibly need to cover in order to prepare for the correctional officer's exam. Some of the topics covered (but not nearly all of them) are as follows: Corrections, the Criminal Justice System, Audits, Male and Female Inmate Population, Federal Prison System, Juvenile Justice, Communicating Policy, Work or Food Strikes, Natural Disasters, Civil Disasters, Hostage Plans, Escape Plans, Bomb Plans, Different Prison/Correctional Officer's Jobs and Positions Available, the Fourth and Fifth Amendments, Cross-Gender Examinations, etc. etc. etc. It is most definitely the largest part of the book, and I can't imagine how they could have left out anything important. Everything that I could think of that would need to be covered in this book, I FOUND in this book.

Finally, the last section is the practice exam. This exam was what made me bump my rating down to four stars. The information in this book is GREAT; truly, it is wonderful information to have if you are about to take this exam. The practice test, however, is a bit lacking. When I get a book like this, the first thing I do is flip to the practice test and see if I can answer any or most of the questions before reading the material. Then, after that, I review the material and then re-take the test to see if my scores had improved. With this study guide, however, I answered 99% of the questions correctly before ever cracking open the rest of the book. The questions were very basic ones. I was a little surprised actually because the information in the guide is wonderful and detailed and just all around great. But the practice test did not match the preparation materials.

Still, despite that, this book is still a great guide to have. The information provided is amazingly precise. I just recommend that people taking the exams not become overly confident if they take this guide's practice test and do extremely well. I just don't think that this practice test mirrors the actual exam in difficulty. So yes, buy the book, and use it to study for the exam. But once you take the practice test and do well, don't automatically assume you will do well on the exam or that the actual exam will be this simple.

Great test prep

My boyfriend has talked about going to corrections officer school for quite some time. I thought by getting him this he would get that extra push he needed to take a step into the future. He loved it, he enjoyed reading through the questions and reading the informative material, it made him want to begin so much more. He thought it was well organized and seemed to cover all the bases of what to expect on a test . I received this product for free in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
