Con- Does not include an in-depth manual

Overall, this book is a good resource to use for additional practice tests. The book does not have a detailed manual, but if you already know the format and the types of questions the SHSAT asks, then this book is perfect for you.

Very Disappointing

Hard to trust a study guide with such little attention to detail that it has typos - cylinder was spelled sylinder in the glossary. One of the questions says there are 8 countries represented at a table but then lists 9 (seems they decided to change Georgia to Germany mid-way through). The worst, however, is that some of the explanations provide no explanation at all (e.g., just says the answer comes from lines 49-51). For the record, lines 49-51 read "However, friends sometimes appears to support the cause of those who lacked the ability or the eloquence to speak on their own behalf and sometimes a public prosecutor was appointed for a particular case . . ." The question is "Under what conditions would an Athenian call upon a friend for legal support?" F. When their friend was a lawyer G. When their friend was more persuasive than they were H When their friend was Pericles J. When their friend could bribe the judges K. When they were unable to speak.

The answer is G. We were looking for an explanation about why that was more correct than K. Instead it just refers back to the lines of the paragraph.

I don't know if these questions came from real SHSAT questions or not - so I'll refrain from complaining about the grammar of the answer choices.

About the Author
Colin Ellard, who works at the intersection of neuroscience and architectural and environmental design, is the author of You Are Here: Why We Can Find Our Way to the Moon, but Get Lost in the Mall and Places of the Heart: The Psychogeography of Everyday Life (forthcoming from Bellevue Literary Press). He has published scientific work in international journals in North America, Europe, and Asia for the past twenty-five years and has also contributed to the public discussion of environmental psychology through his work with museums and the media. A cognitive neuroscientist at the University of Waterloo and director of its Urban Realities Laboratory, Ellard lives in Kitchener, Ontario.

How often do our surroundings manipulate us?

Psychogeography is, in Ellard’s opinion, how our surroundings affect our moods and behavior. How plants make any place seem better- and make people less apt to destroy things. How featureless concrete expanses make a person nervous and unwilling to linger. How surroundings can awe, suffocate, sooth, or tempt a person (think the insides of shopping malls). He explains how and why people have these reactions, and how they can be used to manipulate people. He also goes into how digital technology is changing things, and how it could be used to alienate or integrate.

This is important stuff for any architect, designer, or city planner. It’s also helpful for just about anyone who wants to understand why the feel the way they do in certain environments. One part I especially liked was when he wrote about Temple Grandin’s slaughter house designs that keep cattle calm instead of panicked as they go to their deaths- this is manipulation at its most obvious. How many places do we frequent that affect us in a similar way without our ever being aware of it? The book is technical but easily readable. Recommended.

Earned a place in my heart. (ha)

I read non-fiction only sometimes, and was worried this topic might be a bit of technical or dry, but I was quite fascinated on almost every page with a field of science I had never before explored. Ellard splits up his material into the emotional reactions that different places manifest in us, and then breaks down those emotional responses to their technical and scientific elements without ever losing the thread of a compelling narrative.

He mixes in stories from his own life, or examples of emotions caused by places that we've all felt. For instance, I know now that he loved a particular red metal can opener that was taken from him by rust, and he still wistfully thinks of it when opening a can of beans. :) (And then he describes the science of why he may feel that!)

For me, though, I was hugely surprised at the amount that is unknown in this field. Ellard sometimes describes two contrasting theories for what is happening at a given time - like how we feel in places of awe - and tries to reconcile those differences. I think this should be mandatory reading for any urban planner, or anyone who has a house they want to feel like home.

All in all, a fascinating read that I plan on picking up for an architect friend of mine, and maybe I'll share my copy with my aunt and sisters, but I may make them get their own.

Overly academic prose that seems to lack actual meaning. I tried, I'm theoretically interested in this topic, but could not force actual meaning from the pontificating and defining that only a professor would love.

About the Author
Indranil Goswami has a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Johns Hopkins University. He has taught and conducted research at Morgan State University in Baltimore since 1992. He is a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Maryland and is a past president of the Baltimore Chapter of the Maryland Society of Professional Engineers. Indranil has taught PE (CIVIL) Review and FE (CIVIL) Review courses since 2001. Since 2010, all his review course are delivered via online webinars. In 1998, he was nominated for the Bliss Medal for Academic Excellence by the Society of American Military Engineers and in 2003, received the Educator of the Year Award from the Maryland Society of Professional Engineers. In 2014, he received the Best Faculty award from the Civil Engineering Honor Society at Morgan State University. He currently teaches both his PE Civil Review Course and the FE Review Course via live, online webinars. He can be reached at civilpereview@gmail.com

Excellent practice test for the morning session

Excellent practice test for the morning session. I bought this book a month before taking the Oct 15 exam and went through it a week before the exam. I feel that it helped clarify a couple of concepts I was grappling with and enabled me to solve problems faster in the exam.

THERE WAS A FEW THINGS THAT JUST DIDN'T MAKE SENSE BECAUSE THE RATIONALE IS POOR AND OCCASIONALLY THE KEY WORD TO FINDING A CPT

THERE WAS A FEW ANSWERS THAT COULD NOT HAVE POSSIBLY BEEN CORRECT, THERE WAS A FEW THINGS THAT JUST DIDN'T MAKE SENSE BECAUSE THE RATIONALE IS POOR AND OCCASIONALLY THE KEY WORD TO FINDING A CPT CODE WOULD POINT ME IN THE WRONG DIRECTION. IF YOU ARE SELF PREPARING TO TAKE THE CPC EXAM, THIS BOOK ISN'T FOR YOU. IT'S LOADED WITH TRICK QUESTIONS AND IF YOU DON'T KNOW ANY BETTER YOU'LL FIND YOURSELF FRUSTATED AND LOST AT TIMES. IT MIGHT BE WORTH SPENDING A LITTLE MORE MONEY FOR A BETTER QUALIFIED LEARNING TOOL. THIS BOOK IS A BIT DISCOURAGING.

The coding scenarios should be separate from the answers. Better to code without the 'hints' being visible. Yes, the tests are multiple choice. But the practice should be without, so you are required to research the answers first. Maybe someone out there will publish a coding scenario book with a format as I've described.

About the Author
David J. Soler has been called to enrich lives and catalyze success. He is a Christian, firefighter, author, podcaster, sought-after speaker, entrepreneur, and the founder/publisher of Firefighter Toolbox, which is on a mission to build better firefighters and leaders in the fire service. He is the host of iTunes top-rated firefighter training podcast called Firefighter Toolbox Podcast. (He has interviewed legends of the fire service like: Chief Brunacini, FDIC Chief Halton, Chief Rubin, NFA Administrator Dr. Oneial, Army Chief of Fire Training Robert Simmons, Deputy Chief and Author Frank Viscuso and so many more.) In his fire service role, David is known for three things: being a student of great firefighting, training and encouraging up-and-coming firefighters and officers, and sharing firefighter and life success principles. A must have for your toolbox.

Wow, what a book!

I sat down to read The Firefighter Preplan with my highlighters and pen; however, after reading the intro and first chapter, I couldn't slow myself down. I got through the whole book in two short sittings and have since gone back through half with a fine tooth comb. This book has a perfect mix of motivation, guidance and applicability. True to form, there is no fluff, David brings to the table a refreshing dose of frankness without being overly brief. The action plans at the end of each chapter are smart and to the point and the plan in the back can serve as a model throughout any ones career when setting goals. I'm relatively young in my FD career (6years) and I see myself referring to this Preplan over and over for motivation and guidance to set myself on task and continue working toward becoming a respectable firefighter. Do yourself a favor, get this book and share it with others so we can leave the fire service better than we found it.

Academy teaches you the basics, FF Preplan teaches you what to live by.

A great book that is hard to put down once you open it. Easy read, short, and to the point with "action plans" at the end of each chapter to help you stay on track and get results. They are also a great tool to model throughout your career, for setting goals. Great enhancement for mentoring programs; or those who don't have a program established can piggy back off of this book to help develop one as it serves as a great auxiliary.

FF Preplan has roughly 32 chapters (so almost a chapter a day to maintain, once completed) and another way to recharge your batteries, get fired up, and motivated to be that best firefighter you know and want to be; while making the good advances and steps to help out and bring as many as you can with you to get up... be driven... and make something of yourself, for the better.

I would challenge you to pick up a copy and join me, and many others, through this book. Take tips and words of encouragement from those who have gone before and have knowledge and information to share to those who want to follow and be the best they can be.

Great book, happy I came across it.

One of the best books you can buy regarding the fire service and life. I listen to all the podcast and I took the chance in buying this book and I do not regret it. It was something that at this point in my career I needed. Easy read, not like a text book. It's more as if someone is just talking to you at the firehouse dinner table and unloading all their wisdom. Great book! A must for any firefighter.
