However, full-scale mining did not begin until the 1870s, and for more than a century, mining was the lifeblood of Silverton and the surrounding area. The San Juan Mountains have been called one of the four great mining areas of Colorado, in a state known for its mining heritage. This is not only the story of the mines but also of the men and women who worked and lived in these rugged mountains.

About the Author
Mining historians and authors Karen A. Vendl and Mark A. Vendl are retired geologists with a lifelong interest in Colorado history. The San Juan County Historical Society provided the majority of the images for this book. Duane A. Smith is a retired professor of history at Fort Lewis College and the author of numerous books on Colorado and mining history.

Great historical photographs and well laid out. I own mining property in the Silverton area so it was good to see what all those places used to look like in the heyday of gold and silver mining.

If you are a Colorado Mining History buff and the Silverton area is of interest to you, then this is a Must Have book. It is very well written and includes remarkable old photos of the the mines and locations around Silverton. An OUTSTANDING book!
