The incredible biography of the most famous steam locomotive in the world.
Think of the Golden Age of Steam and one train leaps to mind above all others: the Flying Scotsman, Nigel Gresley's elegant masterpiece of a locomotive. She broke the world speed record in 1934 and has enthralled millions with her beauty and power. Uniquely, her post-war career has been even more varied and exciting than her early triumphs.
Now Andrew Roden tells the Scotsman's remarkable story, from her construction and the glory days between the wars through the decline of steam and her rollercoaster fortunes in the subsequent years: nearly abandoned on a tour of the United States after the money ran out, crossing the Australian interior, then put up for sale yet again when the company that owned her went bankrupt in 2003. A massive public campaign saved her and the Flying Scotsman's restoration began in 2005 at the National Railway Museum in Britain.
With the aid of numerous interviews with those involved with the Scotsman over the years, Roden brings her story memorably to life. With the aid of numerous interviews with those involved with the Scotsman over the years, Roden brings her story memorably to life. Above all, he asks: why do grown men risk their life savings to own her? Why do thousands of people still line the trackside when she's due to race past? And just what is the eternal appeal of the Flying Scotsman?

The British people's locomotive
By Peter Durward Harris
As a child in the fifties, I learned that Mallard was the most famous steam locomotive in the world, which was true at the time. So important was Mallard that when steam locomotives were sent for scrap in the sixties, Mallard was one of the few set aside for preservation as a museum exhibit. Although Mallard has subsequently seen active service on special occasions, it remains mostly a museum exhibit. As a consequence, it is no longer the most famous steam locomotive in the world. That distinction now belongs to the Flying Scotsman.
The Flying Scotsman had a justifiable claim for preservation, albeit Mallard had a stronger claim as a world record holder, and would have been scrapped but for the intervention - and money - of Alan Pegler. He was the first of the private owners who restored the Flying Scotsman.to full working order and have some success running the locomotive on main lines, subsequently to hit problems and sell up.
Eventually, the National Railway Museum stepped in to provide a secure future, agreeing that the Flying Scotsman would not just be a museum exhibit, but would be maintained as a working example of a steam locomotive. All of which is fine in theory and let's hope it happens that way. The NRM bough the Flying Scotsman in 2004, but the difficulties of restoring it yet again means that it still hasn't been restored to working order as I write this. The website says Summer 2015 is the target. Even after that, major overhauls will be necessary at periodic intervals.
This book is all about the adventures and misadventures of the Flying Scotsman including tours of the USA and Australia and the problems that various owners had. Had the Flying Scotsman been preserved along with Mallard to begin with, Mallard might still be the most famous steam locomotive, but it's more likely that another preserved locomotive that has performed on main lines in recent times would have that distinction. We'll never know, but it doesn't matter. By becoming the British people's locomotive after being saved from the threat of being scrapped, the Flying Scotsman has guaranteed immunity from such a fate.

A good (but light) read
By Moxnat3
This book is a somewhat brief description of the evolution of the importance of the Flying Scotsman as an iconic locomotive, and as such is a little disappointing. The writing style is a little cumbersome with some repitition and waffle spoiling the engagement to the reader. There are some interesting stories surrounding the various eras of ownership, but it relies too heavily on anacdotes and rehashed stories that may not be entirely factual or unbiased.
One fact about the Australian visit that was glaringly wrong was the reference to 2 parallel standard gauge tracks next to a 3'6" track (between Melbourne and Albury) - it is actualy one standard gauge track parallel with 2 5'3"tracks!
I would have enjoyed some maps, diagrams and/or photos to accompany this book.
Worth a read if you want a general background on Flying Scotsman, but don't expect too much depth.
