Fun read that's full of surprises, even if you know a lot about Seattle

This is a concise and comprehensively researched look at the forces, natural and human, that shaped and continue to shape Seattle's topography and urban landscape. Although I had a general understanding of Seattle's history, much of the content of this book surprised me because the scale was so much bigger than I had imagined. Seattle, unlike many other cities, happened to have been built in a pretty inconvenient location topographically. In his book, Williams engagingly details the impressive lengths to which the city's early developers forced a decidedly square peg into a round hole. The magnitude of both the vision of these early developers and the scale and environmental consequences of the public works projects they oversaw is astounding. Williams uses this context to explore the implications of Seattle's ongoing struggle to grow and maintain the city in the face of current geographic and topographic constraints like sea level rise, seismic activity, and the glacial deposits that underlie the city (think Alaska Way Viaduct and Bertha). He also does a great job of locating areas of the city where one can stand today and see remnants of and insights into Seattle's geologic and topographic past. Particularly for those who live in the Seattle area, this book will almost certainly change how you look at and feel about the city and will inform your perspective on current development. It will also give you a great list of cool places in and around the city to visit to see this stuff for yourself.

The best of Seattle history

In David B. Williams’ well researched and very readable book, Too High & Too Steep: Reshaping Seattle’s Topography, Seattle emerges as a city changed by water, pick and shovel and the will of the pioneers. To describe this unique setting, Williams explains Seattle’s geology and looks back at early maps such as the Plan of Seattle 1855-56 that shows the land that would become Seattle as well as the layout of the of the future city. But the best part of this book is how Williams enlivens the historical with visits to places that allow the reader to find signs of early Seattle. For example, from a stop on the Lenora Street Bridge one sees traces of Elliot Bays’s original shoreline and a stop at West Point in Discover Park reveals early tide lands. Too High & Too Steep will surely take is place as necessary reading for anyone interested in Seattle History. .

Thoroughly thoughtful, informative, and entertaining

Too High and Too Steep, the latest book by David B. Williams, is thoroughly thoughtful, informative, and entertaining. His historical perambulations through Seattle's topography, past and present, are an excellent commentary on how people adapt to their geology, geography, and environment until they demand their geology, geography, and environment adapt to them. This is a "must-have" addition to the library of every Seattle resident interested in their city's history.
But Too High and Too Steep is also an important addition to the libraries of geographers, historians, and urban planners outside of Seattle. It will serve as a primer to understanding the role of topography in urban development. This new book by David B. Williams will also serve in understanding how far we will go to alter the landscape around us to suit our needs.
