Bad or toxic leadership, abusive supervision, and petty tyranny in organizations are perennial issues. But to date, there has been little effort to examine the scope and nature of bad leadership in the military. Tarnished rectifies that lack of attention by defining the problems and suggesting possible solutions appropriate to the military’s unique structure and situation. Leadership is central to the identity of the U.S. military. Service academies and precommissioning processes have traditionally stressed the development of conscientious leaders of character. The services regularly publish doctrinal works and professional journal articles focusing on various aspects of leadership. Unsurprisingly, in most of those publications leadership is presented as a universally positive notion, a solution to problems, and something to be developed through an extensive and costly system of professional military education. Leadership expert George E. Reed, however, focuses on individual experiences of toxic leadership at the organizational level, arguing that because toxic leadership has such a detrimental impact on the military organizational culture, additional remediation measures are needed. Reed also demonstrates how system dynamics and military culture themselves contribute to the problem. About the Author
George E. Reed is dean of the School of Public Affairs at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. He served for twenty-seven years as an army officer including six years as the director of command and leadership studies at the U.S. Army War College. His writing has been published in journals such as Public Administration Review, Military Review, Leadership, Public Integrity, Armed Forces and Society, and Parameters.

Toxic Leaders Tolerated by Army Leadership

This is an outstanding book with current examples of toxic leader problems faced by the Army. Without naming the names, I recognize the examples from recent publications which give credence to those cited by the author. Sadly, this book will make no difference on the problem of toxic leaders. Numbers cited in past professional journal articles (ARMY magazine, 1988) demonstrate that the problem is not getting better over the years. Unless the Army's leadership does more that give it "lip service" (Army Times: "Army Chief of Staff Odierno Says No More Toxic Leaders"), this issue will continue to hurt innovation and bleed talent as good subordinates leave the organization. Reed's recommendations are sound and based on excellent studies. This book should be mandatory reading for all senior leaders. Our Army staff college students should be required to read it for their leadership classes. Most importantly, the Army's leadership should put some "teeth" into programs like command climate surveys that habitually identify toxic leaders ---- to no effect. Toxic leaders are known but rarely "called out". Reed's recent example of the Apache battalion commander at Fort Carson is a case-in-point. By rewarding identified toxic leaders, we perpetuate the problem. Many thanks to COL Reed for bringing continuing attention to this issue with hopes someone in authority will finally take action. I'm not holding my breath though.

A MUST-READ FOR SERIOUS LEADERS

Timely and well balanced, TARNISHED provides a scholarly yet accessible perspective on destructive leadership practices in the U.S. Military. The transition from sustained combat to shaping operations is taking its toll on morale and negatively affecting the retention of quality leaders. TARNISHED creates an invaluable opportunity to ease our Military’s talent attrition by creating a vocabulary and dialog about toxic influence-behaviors within our organizations. Worthy of serious consideration for the CNO’s reading list.

Essential Reading for all Leaders!

George Reed, the leading authority on toxic and destructive behavior in leadership, delivers a fantastic description of the problem, offers sound solutions and describes the hard truths associated with serving in toxic environments. His insights will resonate with both leaders and the led. He introduces potential solutions for those serving under toxic leaders at the tactical unit level and also policy recommendations for our strategic leadership in the services and DoD. His use of examples is helpful and his citations from experts like GEN Dempsey, LTG(R) Ulmer, Don Snider and Martin Cook add the professional credentials necessary to resonate with the military audience while his use of leadership pioneers from academia and business add credance for that culture. His assertions that we must change the culture and should focus on development of leaders early in their careers is right on. This should be required reading for anyone wanting to lead others.
