An excellent feature is that for some particularly important operations, Stanton follows his summary overview in his main text with deeper analysis in chapter annexes titled “Exemplary Engagement.” Many of the events he covers, such as Byzantine-Muslim or Aragonese-Angevin wars are likely to be unfamiliar with English-speaking readers, which makes this a particular valuable book. About the Author
Dr Charles D. Stanton is a former US naval officer and airline pilot who, after retirement, studied medieval Mediterranean history at Cambridge under David Abulafia. His particular focus is the Norman conquest of southern Italy and Sicily on which he has published several well-received articles in scholarly journals. His recent book, Norman Naval Operations in the Mediterranean, has also been highly praised.

A rather superb overview and starting point

These (as mentioned in this review's title) were the book’s objectives and I was rather happy to discover that they have been fully achieved. Given that this is an overview, and because of the book’s scope – roughly ten centuries – the reader might find in some cases that the author has somewhat and sometimes “cut corners”. Those that have already read more specialised books or one or the other of the periods covered will nevertheless find that there is a fair amount of detail included (much more than I initially expected, anyway!) and that all of the main points are well-made, starting with the limitations of naval warfare under oars and sail at the time. Also included are some good summaries of at least some of the main debates that have taken place among historians and a rather fascinating collection of illustrations, including some superb pictures of Scandinavian warships

A second - and related – major feature of this book is that it is a compilation and a summary. As such, it does not contain any original findings. However, it draws on just about all of the main specialists for each of the various periods covered and contains ample notes and a bibliography which will allow anyone wanting to go any further to do so. Note, however, that the bibliography seems to have been deliberately kept short, possibly to avoid burdening the general reader. A number of titles are omitted from it, both because they are quoted and referenced in more recent titles that are included in the bibliography and because they are listed and referenced among the notes (with total some fifty five pages).

A third feature of this book is its rather interesting and easy to read structure. A short introduction of some nine pages summarises the main components and limitations of medieval naval warfare. This is followed by ten chapters separated into two sections. Each chapter summarises the struggle under review and ends with a focus on a specific and particularly noteworthy naval battle or siege in which naval forces played a prominent role – a case study of sorts. The first section (six chapters) deals with naval warfare in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. The second section (the remaining four chapters) is about naval warfare across the North Sea, the Baltic and the English Channel.

All of the main conflicts and periods that I was expecting to find were included, such as the Byzantine-Muslim struggle, the key and vital role played by the “naval connection” during the Crusades, “The Viking Onslaught” or the “Norman Invasion” (1066 and all that), and the Hundred Years War. AIso included are less well known but nevertheless important episodes, such as the Norman expansion in the central Mediterranean (the author’s speciality), the wars of the Angevines versus the Aragonese over the control of Sicily, the deadly rivalries between Pisa and Genoa and then Genoa and Venice and a very interesting chapter on the German Hanse. A final advantage of these ten chapters is that they can be read separately.

Excellent introduction to a fascinating topic

This is an excellent book, if you are interested in the subject matter. Stanton describes, with pictures, the evolution of maritime technology. As for warfare, he divides the subject into the Mediterranean theater dominated by Genoa, Venice, and the Ottomans, on the one hand, and Northern Europe on the other, concentrating on Vikings, the Hanse, and the French/English battles. At the end of each general description, he provides a detailed consideration of some significant battle, significant in the sense of the development of naval warfare as well as historically so. The writing is clear, well edited, and the illustrations profuse and appropriate. I read most of this book on my Kindle, but examined the illustrations on my Kindle for iPad, which presented them in color, and capable of being zoomed in on. Aside from matters directly related to warfare, Stanton provides enough social and economic context to make the significance of the military matters clear. I am not an expert in this field, but my impression is that this book would be enjoyed by both the general reader, and the more knowledgeable.

'Maritime historian Stanton ("Norman Naval Operations in the Mediterranean", etc.) has produced a readable, very serious study of naval warfare in the wider European world from the age of Justinian to the Renaissance. The book has two parts, a long one on the Mediterranean and a shorter one on the North and Baltic Seas, and their adjacent waters. He covers an impressive range of actors, Byzantine, “Barbarians,” Muslims of various backgrounds, Norman, Aragonese, English, Angevin, Crusader, Viking, the Hanse, French, and the several Italian states. Wouldn't have passed without this book

I just passed the PMP exam today (3 Mar 16), and this was one of the books issued to me in a prep course. I completed all the sample questions in the book, and when I took my test this morning I was actually wishing there were more Questions about network diagram on the exam! I can't believe how confident and prepared I felt for the exam after completing this workbook.

I thought this book was extremely helpful. This book teaches you all about network diagrams and is filled with various questions and solutions that help you really understand network diagrams. It is helpful learning the material and then being able to test your knowledge with the questions in the book. After a few questions I felt that I was an expert at network diagrams. In addition to this book I also read Aileen's other books including:
1. How to get every Earned Value question right on the PMP Exam
2. How to get every subcontract question right on the PMP exam
3. PMP Exam Simplified
Reading the PMBOK isn't enough to pass the exam! These books together will help you really understand the information and pass it the first time!

ok for my needs

I purchased strictly as a PMP question workbook to practice for the exam. It does the trick but for a small book with not a lot of content there shouldn't be misspellings and poor grammar. With all of the author's credentials, I expected more. Misspellings & poor grammar are just inexcusable. Also, the questions jump around topic...in this case network diagram. Suggestion would be to have 5 or 10 questions in a row on the same or similar area (free float, float, FF, FS, SS, SF, etc.) to really reinforce topics....as opposed to jumping from a PERT calculation to the definition of critical chain, to which path is the critical path.

Highly recommended

This book is too good not to have at least one review. While I have no overwhelming interest in Midwestern interurbans, the combination of Amazon's price, admiration for author Harwood's other work, and the quality of Indiana University Press' Railroads Past and Present series of books made a purchase irresistible.

It took longer to write The Lake Shore Electric Railway Story than the 37 years the company existed. Authors Harwood and Korach completed the writing of a project begun by John Rehor and Willis McCaleb. Perhaps the Lake Shore was fortunate in running between populous Cleveland and Toledo, but the photographic record of the line is simply amazing #although coverage of the extreme western end of the line near Toledo has been slighted#. There is enough detailed coverage of the nuts and bolts to satisfy the hard core rail buff: main line operations, local service in cities and towns, equipment, freight, and wrecks #typical of interurbans, there were more than enough of those#.

But readers with interests in economics and technology should also enjoy the book. The interurbans "flamed out" with a rapidity that is rare in American history. Harwood and Korach explain why the Lake Shore finally went bankrupt, and how management in a declining industry fought against the inevitable.

Mixed thoughts

The only problem I have with this book, is that there are many, many facts that conflict with the same data in Harry Christiansen's New Lake Shore Electric. Mr. Christiansen was an expert on the topic, and his facts must be taken as absolute fact. One example would be the eastbound car in the Vermilion wreck. This book erroneously lists it as #12 several times, but the car was actually #14, verified in a photo of the wreck, as well as Christiansen's text of the account in his book. The biggest fact is the building of the Sandusky Connecting Railway. Christiansen says 1926 whereas this book says 1931. Mr. Christiansen was alive and there to witness the line, so again, his must be taken as fact. I will give credit though, much remains a mystery. I'm sure Harwood and Korach may have corrected a few facts Harry got wrong. It goes both ways, so my recommendation is yes, buy this book and read it, but also buy Harry's book and read that. Then, you decide.

He cajoled and coerced Ecuadorian judges on the theory that his noble ends justified any means of persuasion. And in the end, he won an unlikely victory, a $19 billion judgment against Chevon--the biggest environmental damages award in history.  But the company refused to surrender or compromise. Instead, Chevron targeted Donziger personally, and its counter-attack revealed damning evidence of his politicking and manipulation of evidence. Greek tragedy in many acts

"This is a tale with no shortage of knaves and villains." -- Paul Barrett, Law of the Jungle

Paul Barrett has written a very good primer to the saga of Steven Donziger's guerrilla war against Chevron and Chevron's relentless carpet bombing counter-attack. It could be tougher on Chevron, it is true. But, Barrett is fairer than I would have thought when in background I read furious denunciations of the book by Steven Donziger and people sympathetic to him.

I can safely say that I have never done as much background material reading and research for any book review as I have for this. I read Judge Kaplan's opinion and appeals of it. I read articles by the Chevron legal team on the use of Section 1782, and, frankly was impressed by their tenaciousness. I read Karen Hinton's twitter feed and Huffington Post article. I spent some time on Steve Donziger's webpage. I read the (rather clearly ghostwritten) affidavit of Pablo Farjado. With all that, although I think that Paul Barrett could have given more time over to Chevron's misdeeds, for the most part, his narrative was faithful to what I learned from my own research.

The topic is also incredibly polarizing. I am sure that a researcher at an agency hired by Chevron will soon be typing up an analysis of my comments along with a summary of my biography and my perceived biases and weaknesses. And, some earnest intern at Amazon Watch will probably be doing much the same, though with less attention to the order of the email addresses of the recipients that she sends it to. (You may think I'm exaggerating, but take a look at the wikipedia page of William Langewiesche. He's an amazing writer, but he made the mistake of writing an overly sympathetic piece, Jungle Law, the title of which Barrett riffs on, about the Ecuadorian plaintiffs. Chevron obtained Donziger's email correspondence with him, which revealed that he was, well overly sympathetic, to Donziger, et al. Consequently his entire wiki profile deals with Chevron's take on his "bias.")

So let's put all that aside. Is the book fair to all parties? Basically yes.

Barrett does a good job of laying out the history of the region and Texaco's actions. Texaco cut a deal with Ecuador's government to extract the oil from the region. No one cared much about the indigenous people. Best practices for extracting oil involved slightly more expensive processes of lining waste pits to prevent ground water contamination and reinjection of byproducts into the ground. Texaco did neither, instead leaving vast ecological devastation in its path. Barrett goes to great pains to stress that the Ecuadorian national oil company didn't do much better. Google the actual human damage. It's pretty stunning. Barrett discusses some of it, but his analysis is fairly cursory and this is a flaw of the book.

Enter Steven Donziger, an ambitious Harvard Law graduate, former Latin American investigative journalist, and man on a mission. Donziger is a dynamic showman figure capable of charming and alienating in equal measure. He has been fighting this case for the past twenty years. Donziger is a fascinating, larger than life character. Since he graduated from law school in 1991, he's only had one case--this one. Like Tom Hagen, he has a very special practice.

Donziger does an amazing job of shepherding this litigation, surviving an endless series of Chevron's litigation gambits--at one point filing 37 motions in a single hour, this stratagem due apparently to an Ecuadorian rule of judicial administration that requires motions to be ruled on in three days, or the judge must be replaced--acquiring litigation funding to resist Chevron's attempts to outlast the Ecuadorians, and getting celebrity and media attention and support to publicize it. Ultimately, he obtains a $19 billion judgment against Chevron in an Ecuadorean court. But, his cult of personality falters at a crucial moment, allowing Chevron to gain the upper hand. As a result, Chevron was able to bring a suit in New York that places the Ecuadorian plaintiffs' entire recovery into question.

The Donziger case is an interesting look into what ethical lapses are and are not permitted in the American legal system. Chevron's counsel may be aware of numerous bad acts by their clients. There is even evidence that Chevron has provided a comfortable living for fact witnesses, what ruder people might call a bribe. Yet, the American legal system has a difficult time reaching these ethical problems. Donziger, however, has acted flamboyantly and played fast and loose in filings and in public statements. The American legal system, aided by able and well-funded counsel on the other side, has no difficulty dealing with such issues when brought to their attention.

Although Texaco polluted the Ecuadorean jungle, Chevron doesn't get a pass either. Chevron's corporate counsel's arrogance and unwillingness to settle this case, not to mention overly clever strategy in getting the case dismissed in New York and insisting that the plaintiffs refile in Ecuador, still may cost them very dearly, the current success of Gibson Dunn's Hail Mary RICO action against Donziger notwithstanding.

My end conclusion is that the Ecuadorian plaintiffs would have been sanctioned in American court, but their verdict would stand. It is clear that both parties engaged in very tough extra-litigation tactics. Chevron appears to have thrown money around to judicial and non-judicial actors like a drunken sailor. Donziger and company embraced the philosophy of politics trumping legal principles too freely. Judge Kaplan is a distinguished and capable jurist, but his willingness to accept representations by Chevron while not scrutinizing the impact of Chevron's own misdeeds may have led to Donziger receiving a less than fair result in his courtroom. I was particularly stunned by his command to Judge Zambrano that he not refresh his memory by consulting his opinion when he was on the stand. That was probably erroneous.

Paul Barrett has written a vital and interesting book. But, the story is not over yet. Donziger is currently appealing Judge Kaplan's ruling to the Second Circuit Court of Appeals, which has already reversed Judge Kaplan once. Read the book and then don't stop reading.

Update: Yesterday, the Second Circuit heard Donziger's appeal. In a shocker, Judge Wesley asked if there was any reason why the 2nd Circuit couldn't deem the Ecuadorian judgment tainted but allow Donziger to refile in Manhattan! Unlikely, but yet another twist.

World-class investigative journalism, and a painstakingly detailed and evenhanded account of an infuriating story

I would say that Mr. Barrett's account of this epic legal and political battle reads like a John Grisham novel, but that would be selling short its nuance, painstaking detail, and moral ambiguity. There are no good guys in this story - he reserves deserved condemnation for the corrupt plaintiffs' attorneys in the case, the oil company responsible for pollution in the Amazon, and the Ecuadorian government complicit in that pollution. Its only ethically uncompromised characters are the indigenous Ecuadorians whose lives have been destroyed as the book's antagonists go to war over what quickly devolves into a brutal and vindictive legal, political, and public relations battle.

Many, including a number of reviewers here (whom I suspect are motivated more out of a reflexive hostility to Big Oil than a well grounded and sincere concern about the real victims in this case), see the Chevron/Donziger affair as one of moral absolutes, David and Goliath, the good guys vs. bad guys. The lesson of Law of the Jungle is simply that no such dichotomy exists. Texaco (later acquired by Chevron) could have cleaned up pollution in the Amazon for a relative pittance when it left the country in the early 90s. Plaintiffs and environmental activists could have prioritized actual cleanup efforts over their attempts to score an historic win over a Designated Villain. The Ecuadorian government could have honored its contractual obligations to clean up areas of the rainforest in which its state-owned company had operated. None of that happened, and the impoverished residents of Lago Agrio and the surrounding areas have suffered greatly as a result.

The book's central character, crusading trial lawyer and activist Steven Donziger, is a perfect microcosm of the story's moral ambiguity. We find ourselves siding with him as he signs on to the case, fresh out of law school, and sharing his righteous indignation at Texaco's inexcusable refusal to take responsibility for its actions in Ecuador. By the end of the book, it's clear that not only has Donziger ceded any moral high ground and lapsed into an utterly unethical (and possibly criminal) campaign of deception, but that he has actively impeded efforts to mitigate the real problems in Ecuador in an effort to secure a court verdict that he sees as both a moral crusade and a means of personal aggrandizement.

Unsurprisingly, Donziger has taken to attacking Barrett for his work. True to form, many of his claims are utterly and bizarrely devoid of any semblance of accuracy. (For example, he claims on his personal blog that Barrett "scarcely mentions lead Ecuadorian attorney Pablo Fajardo," when in fact Fajardo is a central character of the book, mentioned perhaps more often than any other individual but Donziger himself.)

Law of the Jungle is the most exhaustive, painstakingly researched, evenhanded account of this epic battle to date. Read it if you're tired of the usual "good vs. evil" moralizing of contentious environmental debates. You won't put it down with much faith in either side of these sorts of disputes, but you will have gained a fuller understanding of the compromises inherent in global politics, law, trade, environmentalism, and economic development, and with a deeper appreciation for investigative journalism that can illuminate our understanding of complex and controversial issues.

It's also just a damn good read.

An epic struggle for justic

"Law of the Jungle" by Paul M. Barrett is a fascinating reconstruction and analysis of the famous class action lawsuit filed against Texaco (later Chevron) on behalf of the indigenous people of Ecuador. Mr. Barrett is a best-selling author who has written extensively about the landmark case including research gathered first-hand in the U.S. and Ecuador. This highly readable, engaging and dramatic book narrates an epic struggle for justice against entrenched corporate and governmental power, vice and corruption.

Mr. Barrett focuses much of the story on the attorney, Steven Donziger who championed the cause of the tribal peoples of the rainforest. Donziger's flair for public relations in the 1990s helped gain attention for the lawsuit including support from celebrities around the world (in fact, I was one of those inspired by the struggle and co-wrote Save the Rainforest, a tune featuring Larry King on vocals, that made a passing reference to these events). But Mr. Barrett shows us that, sadly, there was much more to the fairy tale, David-versus-Goliath story than most of us realized.

Mr. Barrett details the many cynical twists and turns that ensued over twenty years of proceedings as Donziger did whatever he felt was necessary to win. Mr. Barrett allows the reader leeway to consider whether it may have been a personal desire for wealth, prestige or some other character flaw that might have driven Donziger to the point of recklessness, a Harvard graduate whose acquaintances include some of the most powerful people on the planet. Mr. Barrett's story makes it abundantly clear that Donziger's actions crossed an ethical line that ultimately made it a simple matter for Chevron to dismiss the case. It seems that Donziger made a fool of nearly everyone; while crushing the hopes of the poor suffering people of the Ecuadorian rainforest to gain the justice they so richly deserved.

I highly recommend this painstakingly researched and bittersweet book to everyone.

A great resource---very easy to read. Better yet, it provides all of the information and advice on the college search and application process in one centralized resource---much more convenient that gathering bits and pieces of info from a multitude of websites and guidance counselors.

Roger Bourke White Jr. is a careful observer of life and people, and he's done so from many interesting perspectives. He was a soldier in Vietnam in the 1960s, a college student at MIT in the 1970s, a computer network pioneer in the 1980s, and a teacher in Korea in the 1990s.

Fresh and compelling insights

Even if you think a great deal about tomorrow, this series of essays by futurist Roger Bourke White Jr. will give you fresh and compelling insights about what lies ahead. White starts with highly reasonable premises and logically develops them and their implications into surprising, sometimes inspiring, often discomfiting conclusions about society, economics, education, the environment, and privacy. He is well read of the futurist literature, adds his own perspectives and uniquely synthesizes them into his vision of 2050.

His stories, mixed in with the essays, are so engaging and fun that I give him a pass if there are minor inconsistencies. After all, we are talking about the future: imagination and poetic license are both required and welcome. Several aspects of White’s vision, such as next-generation handheld devices and ubiquitous wearables, are already coming at us.

In White’s world, avatars are central to everyday life, there is "necessity money" which everyone gets and "luxury money" which has to be worked for. Necessity money is provided by the Total Entitlement State. There has been a lot of progress in biotechnology. People have adapted to life in environments ranging from other planets to the ocean floor. They have done so by using gene editing to craft different body styles. As White describes life in 2050, we gain insights about US and world history and life in 2015. In chapters 2 and 3, we get to witness first-hand how the Singularity will be reached – the point at which machine intelligence equals and exceeds human intelligence.

White sees a highly automated future economy – the Total Entitlement State (TES) – in which artificial intelligences (AIs), impervious to bribery, corruption, and public choice effects, plan the production and distribution of goods. It is rosy in some ways, dystopian in others. The economic automation immediately raises questions. In a free society, thanks to innovation, the boundary between necessary and luxury goods is always moving upward (more and more luxury goods becoming necessary); will this progress continue in White’s TES if AIs are doing the innovating? Who owns and programs the AIs?

White’s vision of education is that through exploration and experimentation, the truth will out, whether materials science, history, or other field of study. A range of human-like “cyber muses” will serve all the same purposes that various humans in our lives serve today: companionship, learning, intimacy, sounding boards, play, matchmaker, and sexual gratification. They will feed our self-esteem and vanity; challenge us to greater achievement; and console us when we are depressed. And there are plenty of surprises, such as some people getting copyrighted so muses have to pay to imitate them. Like an actor breaking the fourth wall, White often shares what led to his 2050 thinking, for example, recommended books or his personal experiences with real women who served as muses for him.

In summary, White’s 2050 vision combines wondrous technological advances with how human thinking will be changed by these advances. This is a truly unique mix of speculations and the ramifications of those speculations.

Neat Visions of the Future

The neat part about this book is it is a mix of essays about how different our future will be, and science fiction stories to put a nicely human twist on what those differences will mean in how we think about things.
The center of the difference is increasing automation, being handled by increasing aware computer systems. White does a neat job of talking about how these will affect how we live.
One of the neat ideas he comes up with is cyber muses -- these are computer systems designed specifically to stroke human thinking. At first they will just talk, not much later they will start inhabiting physical bodies, and then all sorts of fun stuff can happen. I love his story about Party Time when a guy brings his muse along as he tries to score.
Another thing White gets into is wearables and how these will change how we live and think.

All-in-all, lots of new and interesting ideas are being presented here, and they are being presented in a new and interesting format.

The author of this book, Ernst A. Lehmann, was close to the Zeppelin story from its early days and had great faith in the ever increasing success of the Zeppelin on international routes. It is sadly ironic that this talented man and strong advocate of the Zeppelin should die in Hindenburg disaster shortly after he had produced the draft for this book. He died following the fire that destroyed the Hindenburg on 6 May 1937; he survived the fire itself but was badly burned and died the following day. Lehmann was a Zeppelin commander during the First World War bombing England on numerous occasions, and even met some of the supreme German commanders such as General Erich Ludendorff. He was well acquainted with Count Zeppelin and all of the designers and management of the Zeppelin Company. After the war he worked for the Zeppelin Company under Hugo Eckener, who took over the management following Count Zeppelin's death in 1917. Lehmann was closely involved in the voyages of the Graf Zeppelin, including the famous round the world voyage, and pioneered services to the Unites States and the regular service to South America. Lehmann makes his Nazi sympathies quite clear, but tactfully does not touch upon his differences with Hugo Eckener regarding the use of the airships for Nazi electioneering-for Eckener was strongly against it. Nor does he touch upon Göring's maneuvering which broke up the Zeppelin Company, thereby leaving Eckener as an outsider. He believes in the superiority of German engineering and beyond that the superiority of everything German. Lehmann served as commanding officer on more than 100 of the flights of the Graf Zeppelin between 1928 and 1936. In 1935, when Hermann Göring created the Deutsche Zeppelin Reederei to increase Nazi influence over Zeppelin operations, Captain Lehmann was named director of the new airline. In 1936, he commanded 10 round-trip flights to Lakehurst on the new Hindenburg. The text is well-written, approachable, and provides a comprehensive account of the Zeppelin story until the 1937 disaster which cost the author his life.

About the Author
Ernst August Lehmann (1886-1937) was a First World War Zeppelin commander and then went on to become the most senior captain in the Zeppelin Company and made more than 100 of the flights of the Graf Zeppelin between 1928 and 1936. He was one of the most famous and experienced figures in German airship travel. The Pittsburgh Press called Lehmann the best airship pilot in the world. He wrote this book shortly before his death in the Hindenburg disaster. Ian Castle is an expert on Zeppelins and author of two books on the topic: London 1914-17: The Zeppelin Menace, 2008; The Zeppelin Base Raids-Germany 1914, 2011.

Looking for information on airships (zeplins) don't miss this book.

Love this book, glad the original writing of Captain Ernst Lehmann was finally reprinted and had additional information added. I read the first edition with only the Captain's story. While I was reading it, it seemed like the Captain was actually talking to me. Too bad he was killed in the Hindenburg disaster. I am sure he could have written some more interesting books. He also was a cousin of my grandfather so that made it even more special.
