Want a 4 or 5 on the exam? This book should be your first priority!

THE COURSE/EXAM:

World History AP, or WHAP, is a college level world history class that tests a student's ability to connect the fundamentals of history under principals such as culture, economy, and political aspects. Students will be required to do conceptual and analytical thinking to link different civilizations with one another. The purpose of this course is not to memorize dates and history, but rather to understand how all civilizations can be linked with TRENDS. You will be required to understand these trends in both the multiple choice and free response portion of the exam, unlike APUSH(AP US History), which requires a great deal of information retention.

At the end of the year, you will take the WHAP exam to determine your knowledge in the class. The exam is composed of 70 multiple choice questions worth 50% of the grade and 3 essays worth 50% of the grade together. The multiple choice questions test aspects of cultures and your knowledge of remembering their differences and similarities, such as How did _______ differ from ________ economically? The free response part has 3 essays: a Document Based Question, a Change over Time Question, and a Compare/Contrast Question. With each essay, you can score from a 0-9, which is based on a rubric I will post below. Getting a 5 on the exam means earning about 70-100% of the maximum allotted points, while a 4 is around 50-70%.

PRINCETON REVIEW:

My world history textbook was an absolute PAIN to read. As a result, I decided to purchase this book to supplement the overall experience for the class. And it helped: significantly.

The book starts off with more info about the WHAP test, such as what to expect and how to answer questions. Its key strategy is Process of Elimination, and it will provide examples to help explain how best to use it. ONE THING THAT HAS CHANGED AS OF 2011 IS THAT THERE IS NO MORE GUESSING PENALTY FOR THE TEST, SO FEEL FREE TO GUESS WITHOUT PENALTY. The huge chunk in the middle is like a secondary textbook, more on this later. The last part of the book contains 2 AP full length tests, in which I suggest you use one for a diagnostic and the second to test your skills.

If a WORLD HISTORY book makes me actually enjoy reading it, its obviously going to stick in my head better. And that is the magic of this book. Don't expect huge lengthy paragraphs on certain chapters; rather, information you will actually need for the test. The book is sprinkled with some comical effects that make it much more easier to understand. Also, there are small information boxes that let you connect places to places, the main focus I mentioned above. I highly recommended knowing these boxes like the back of your hand; you WILL need them for the exam.

The tests are probably the closest to College Board AP style as you will see in a reference book. Rather than asking for straight facts like some books I know, Princeton's uses an analytical basis for its questions just like the AP. Furthermore, there is an answer key at the end with useful explanations about the answers as well. In fact, the Princeton Review's tests are very close, if not HARDER, than the real test, so they are very valuable. I suggest saving them till the 2 weeks before the exam, when you are reviewing this book.

There are no primary resources in the book and no example essays, but I will remedy the 2nd part at least with a link below. Though the book does give guidelines on how to write the essays, it would be nicer to see actual ones along with commentaries. The lack of primary resources isn't that significant, but still noteworthy, as there are often questions in the multiple choice over historical documents.

One question I've been asked several times is if it is a good textbook replacement. Honestly, for the class itself, it's not enough. As stated above, the book will work wonders if you supplement it with a few notes of your own, but this shouldn't be your ONLY resource if you want to make an A in the class. I used online outlines to complement this book, and as a result got the A. What does this book work best as? A refresher. I can promise that nearing the time for the AP, I forgot many important details from the first semester. Thankfully though, this book let me recall names I had forgotten, such as Mamluk and the Hellenistic Era. It's good(actually, amazing) for the AP, as the AP doesn't require that much detail, but your teacher will most likely incorporate details this book won't cover.

This book is truly not the best for super essays, but decent for good(5 or 6/9) essays. When I took the essays for the actual exam, I can just say that I felt a little screwed. A 8 or 9/9 essay requires a LOT more detail than the book provides. For example, one of the 2010 essays was to describe changes over time in African religion systems. The book briefly covered this, but it was only about 1/2 page of info. YOU WILL NEED MORE FOR A BETTER ESSAY(more significantly so as it is 50% of the grade), so please do not rely on this book single-handedly.

The book will do wonders for preparing you for the MC portion of the AP. Compared to other prep books, this will at least ensure you a 3 or 4; the others about a 2 or 3. However, that one point difference to a 4 or 5 will require some action on your part, and I shall help you out by providing a few links below. The reason I am giving this book a 5 is because it was the only review book I used, and it, along with a few external notes, ensured me a 5 on the exam. And if I can get a 5, you can too!

ADVICE AND EXTERNAL LINKS:

If taking this class at school-
*Make sure to follow along what your teacher says. If you don't have a good teacher, I highly suggest look at online presentations.
*Add additional notes to the book that you may find helpful. Now remember. SPECIFIC Dates(you MUST at least know the basic time period)/REALLY MINOR details are not at all necessary for this class, so don't waste time doing so.
*It's important to understand the CHANGES OVER TIME in a society(Such as China) and COMPARING AND CONTRASTING two different societies (such as the Mongols and the Byzantines). I highly recommend creating a visual table for each of the societies involved in a time period on the basis of their customs, foreign policy, etc. etc.
*Don't take the practice exams until the few weeks before the exam. They are extremely valuable. When the time comes, time yourself accordingly and make sure to look at the explanations for why you got something right or wrong. Do you see any patterns in the questions you missed? If so, you may want to review the section in either your textbook or PR book.
*Hate the textbook and don't want to use it?! I know! Me neither! I used online outlines of the textbook, and it, along with this book, made my life a lot easier!
*Look at some of the tips below.

If you are self-studying this course-
*Read the textbook part of the book at least 2 or 3 times. Make sure to read the commentaries, they are break-or-make what you will see on the AP questions.
*Take some textbook quizzes at the website mentioned below (they are pretty close to AP level). Review the questions you got wrong and understand why you got them wrong.
*Take one practice test, and see how you do. Analyze the ones you got wrong. See any patterns? Review that chapter again in the book. If you guessed on any question, put a mark on it, so that your patterns aren't flawed. Repeat for Practice Test II.
*As you don't have a teacher to guide you on how to write the essays, I suggest this course of action. First, print out the grading rubric for all 3 essays so that you know how points are given and what you need to put on the essay. ENGLISH GRAMMAR IS NOT IMPORTANT(please do write it in English though!) and neither is spelling; don't waste precious time on that. Take a look at some of the free response questions at the website below, and practice them. Do you see any prompt that might be tricky for you? If you see many of these, you need another information supplement. Find some outlines online and review them. If you only have trouble with a few, review what your PR says.
*Start early, not the week before the exam, to ensure a 4 or 5.

General Advice for Exam-
*Don't be scared to BS(for the lack of a better word..). Essay graders can't penalize inaccuracy, so if you have NO IDEA what your essay is talking about, make it along rather than leaving it blank. Of course, use common sense please. Drawing a superman logo doesn't count as an essay, and neither does THIS IS SPARTAAAA.
*FEEL FREE TO GUESS ON QUESTIONS YOU DON'T KNOW. THE GUESSING PENALTY HAS BEEN REMOVED STARTING THIS YEAR.
*Bring a watch with you on test day to maintain a solid amount of time for each essay- around 40 minutes for each one.

Best Review Book! Will Definitely Help Your Score

After looking at several different brands of review books for this past year when I took AP World History, I decided on this one. It was more concise than other review books (more big picture, some detail but not as much) and it was recommended by both my teacher and other students. I like it because it focused on the big ideas instead of tiny little details. This was so helpful because if you only know lots of small details, they may not even be on the test. If you understand the big picture that connects all those details, you'll do a lot better because it will help you on the essay section (which I was most scared about) and help you figure out detail-oriented multiple choice questions.

I bought the 2011 Edition of this book, and I'm sure the 2012 one is only better. The author has a sense of humor and explains in normal, everyday talk to simplify what the textbook says. The practice tests are very helpful because they're harder than the actual exam was, so if you can work through them you'll be really prepared for the exam.

I got a 5 on the AP world exam, and I know I would not have been able to do it without this book. I learned a lot in class, but this book helped pull it all together. I only wish I had bought it earlier because I think it would have been loads of help to prepare me for each unit test throughout the year (there are 5 units) as well as the actual exam.

If you're taking AP world, GET THIS BOOK! you won't be sorry!

The right prep book for the AP exam :)

If you're in AP World History, or self-studying, this is the book to get for the AP exam.

This past year I took my first AP [sophomore] and was extremely nervous for the exam. My teacher had us highlight and annotate the Barrons book for world history, but I found it really unhelpful. I found Barron's full of unnecessary details that distracted me and made it really difficult for me to concentrate on the vital points that I needed to know. The practice questions at the end of each chapter were too easy of a review.

Scared of getting a 2, I went on amazon to see if any other review book for the test had gotten high ratings. That's when I found Princeton Review's book. Luckily my local library had this book available so I decided to get it quickly.

To be honest, I didn't really read the intro and strategies part in depth as my teacher had done a nice job in telling us how to write the three types of essays. Plus all of our tests this year were AP Multiple Choice style.

So i skipped to the review section which was a decent size. I found it to be organized in chapters; each pertaining to one chunky time period of world history. After reading and taking good notes on the first chapter, I knew this was the right book. I was able to concentrate and really understand the material, and the book gave me several examples of connections I should make. I managed to go through the entire review section in about a month, and the notes that I took served as good reinforcement material.

The author of this book has a style that is understandable, though there are a few corny jokes in between [this actually helps you remember the material!]

One downside to this book is that there are no practice review questions after each chapter of the review [a prime reason why I took notes...and I would suggest the same]

Come AP exam time, I wasn't completely confident [who is?] but I felt much better than before. So in that sense, this book was a success. The exam was decent as well, and although I haven't gotten my scores back yet, I think I passed with a 3 or above!

* I must note that the practice tests in this book were SO off. In fact, I don't think any review book has realistic practice tests so I would suggest purchasing offical Collegeboard tests which are available on their online store.

So after a lengthy review which I hope some of you actually read, I strongly suggest this book if you are preparing for the AP World History exam and need a review guide. I haven't gotten my score back like I said, but I will be glad to update this review with my grade when I do get it :) Just getting this book alone will not help you. But if you are motivated to do well and actually go through the review carefully [and like I strongly suggest, take notes] then you will be in good shape come May !

Love it, would recommend

All I gotta say is this is amazing! I am a college student and I have been recently searching for Study Aids to support me, so far this one is far the best and unregretful one I've ever tried. It actually improved my mood and my mental math skills. I am approaching to master tougher questions in college. As far as I know, this book boost me up pretty fast, I'm actually doing good on my homework and tests. This was a very big thing in my life, very supportive, I highly recommend for those who read this to purchase this if you're looking forward to master tougher questions and if you have some problems on math.

An excellent ebook that exceed my expectation. I am preparing for SAT, and this book was helpful with brief and clear explanations. So many test questions for Math preparation and explained them very well. The practice tests are comprised entirely of and medium and difficult to more complex ones. Tips, tricks are useful too..

Received the book instantly over Kindle and I thank the author for it. There are best practices tests which can be only helpful if you study and practice everyday. There are explanation with questions. I am thinking that my nephew will score good points in Math for coming SAT exams.

this is a good book. It would be helpful to mention that ...

This is one of those books that helps if you are trying to see the context of the words in Spanish. It assumes some foreknowledge, since you have to know most of the other words in the sentences too, so especially for people who are at an intermediate level, this is a good book. It would be helpful to mention that in the title or subtitle, or at least in the book description. I love that it’s in alphabetical order. With hyperlinks, it would have even been better.

So it's a good guide all in all

Didn’t know you can break down Spanish into this simple words and be able to understand it fast. I’ll definitely buy more from Justin Rodriguez. It’s good that he has found a way to lessen the hassle in studying Spanish. Also, from what I can remember, Spanish belongs to the top 5 of widely spoken languages, if I’m not mistaken. So it's a good guide all in all.

Great value and excellent way to learn Spanish!

I wish I had this book before heading to my most recent trip to Spain. Justin does a wonderful job not only giving the top 1000 most common words in Spanish, but also laying out how to use them properly. I studied Spanish for 6 years and learned some new things just by reading this book.

This book is great for a new beginner who wants to learn Spanish but doesn't know where to begin or someone like myself who needs to sharpen my skills and learn the context of Spanish words better. Either way, this is quite a value for so little money!

About the Author
Ivan Luciani is a corporate pilot who has logged over 10,000 flight hours flying around the world, and whose aviation career currently spans 34 years. He has flown private and public transport operations in a variety of business jets, including the Bombardier Global Express and, more recently, the Gulfstream 450 and 550. In addition to being a Captain he has also held several managerial posts. While he may be an experienced pilot, he readily and openly admits that, he is definitely an amateur author. Ivan lives in Hong Kong and in Macao with his Thai wife.

Great book about the private jet world - fascinating!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, which I imagine will have broad appeal, not just for folks interested in aviation, but also who are interested in adventure, or even those who are contemplating a career in the world of private jets, or even those who are interesting in getting a very different glimpse of a unique viewpoint of Asia (itself a very interesting part of the world), but from 45,000 feet and specifically about how VVIP's travel so efficiently. Although some passages from what happens in the air was fascinating, what is perhaps even more captivating is the author's description of what happens on the ground, at private jet terminals, and in his interaction with business and government leaders and their entourage. Once I started reading this book, I couldn't stop reading haha.

The author writes with integrity about his experiences in being a private jet captain but also brings humor to the book. His passion for his chosen career really comes out, as does his commitment to safety and service and to mentoring those around him. I think people from the commercial airlines world may be surprised how much more personal business aviation is, how broad the responsibilities of a private jet captain really are, and how much difference they can make in helping VIP's, who no doubt rely on these captain's to reach remote places where numerous investments are made and jobs created. I will definitely want to read this book again!

I’ve had the distinct pleasure of knowing Ivan since 1998 when he was based in Singapore’s Seletar Airport and I in Kuala Lumpur’s Subang Airport. A few months ago he honored me with an advanced copy of this marvelous and entertaining book.

I’ll start by saying that this is a must-read for anyone involved, or interested, in the world of corporate aviation. Don’t be looking for a technical manual although Ivan does a great job of weaving in some technical facts into his narrative. Corporate pilots will see many of their own experiences reflected in those of this consummate professional. Some, myself included, may be somewhat envious of the way that he has managed his career, and of his many accomplishments, including his academic successes. But more importantly, the reader will be transported into a world that they will either recognize or be fascinated by the tale of what they had little, if any, knowledge existed. Enjoy!

I would like to wish Ivan many more “Happy Landings”

I have been a helicopter pilot for over 40 years and I have known Ivan since 1999. A Bizjet pilot's life and responsibilities, are totally different from that of an airline pilot. Ivan's book highlights this aspect very well. The scenarios described in the book are unique and fascinating.

He has undergone an incredible journey, chasing his dream from the tender age of 8 years to what he is today: 69 countries and 14 states, 6 licences, Director Flight Operations. This makes it a very memorable journey. He has 11 more years and would probably add more to the list and make it into the Guinness Book of records.

He has a very engaging style of writing. For example, his description of situations wherein he was refused a landing permit, planning to ditch in the Pacific with a 250 lb patient, and when he was told to, “descend to 10,100 metres, launching a rocket” are very well written. As a pilot, when I put myself in his situation, I can well imagine what he and his F/O went through till they landed back safely on terra firma.

This book is an inspirational read, for any young pilot wishing to join the Bizjet segment in the aviation Industry. I would like to wish Ivan many more “Happy Landings”.

About the Author

T.S. Srivatsan, Professor of Materials Science & Engineering in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at The University of Akron (OH, USA), earned his M.S. in Aerospace Engineering in 1981 and his Ph.D in Mechanical Engineering in 1984 from Georgia Institute of Technology (USA). Dr. Srivatsan joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering faculty at The University of Akron in 1987. He has authored or edited 57 books, delivered over 200 technical presentations, and authored or co-authored more than 700 archival publications in journals, book chapters, book reviews, proceedings of conferences, and technical reports. He is a Fellow of (i) American Society for Materials International; (ii) American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and (iii) American Association for Advancement of Science.

T.S. Sudarshan earned his B.Tech in Metallurgy from the Indian Institute of Technology (Madras), and completed his M.Sc and Ph.D in Materials Engineering Science from Virginia Tech (VA, USA). He is President and CEO of Materials Modification, Inc., which is at the forefront of research, development, and commercialization of advanced materials utilizing novel processing techniques. He is a Fellow of (i) American Society for Materials International; (ii) International Federation for Heat Treatment and Surface Engineering; and (iii) Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining. He has also produced numerous papers [175+] in journals and edited books [30+].

An Amazon Best Book of September 2015: When we last saw Jacob and his peculiar companions in Hollow City they were in the kind of danger that left me chewing my fingernails waiting for the next book to see if they make it out alive. The Library of Souls did indeed pull me off the previous cliff, but if you know Ransom Riggs and the Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children series, you know there is more where that came from. As we’ve come to expect, the third book in the series has an abundance of strange and absorbing black and white photographs that came from all sorts of places yet look as though they were created just for this particular piece of the puzzle—at this point, the photos provide an undercurrent as critical to the overall flow of the story as the words themselves. I don't want to spoil the read so I won't tell you (as much as I'd like to...) about reversals and time loops, evil doers and acts of heroism that make up this tantalizing novel, but let me just say that I found the whole thing, from beginning to end, to be every bit as mysterious, surprising, and gratifying as I’d hoped it would be. --Seira Wilson

The book picks up where Hollow City (Quirk, 2014) left off without missing a beat, catapulting the children on a dark chase through London and various time loops in a final confrontation against the evil wights and the monstrous hollowgasts. In Hollow City, the children were trying to save Miss Peregrine. In Library of Souls, the fate of all Peculiardom is at stake. As in the previous books, the characters, their relationships, and their special abilities help to inform the world-building, and the detailed descriptions set the tone, which covers the spectrum from humorous to suspenseful to downright terrifying. An old adage states that a picture is worth a thousand words, and, as in the previous books, found photographs continue to illustrate the unique cast of characters and fantastical settings. The photos collected by Riggs are a highlight, adding a believable confirmation to the spectacular narrative. Readers new to the series should start with the first book, and interest in the titles will only grow, as Tim Burton's film adaptation is scheduled for March 2016. A fine finish

Reading a trilogy is a gamble. The first book introduces the characters, the setting and the plot; the second creates the tension and drama that drives the story to a “cliff” from which the reader hangs until the final novel arrives and that installment brings to a conclusion the questions, mysteries raised in the first two installments with the heroes having faced life-threatening situations (sometimes) successfully. If the trilogy is a “success,” by its completion the reader will feel: as satisfied as if they had completed an arduous journey, sad to say goodbye to people with whom they had traveled but joyful at having experienced a trip whose memories will last a life time. In all aspects, this book was a fitting completion of a most satisfying trilogy.
The “cliff” from which we were left hanging at the end of Hollow City was in a station of the London “tube” at the present time (Jacob, Emma, et al, having been forced through a time loop into this moment) amidst the smoke and rubble of a fierce battle fought with the wights. The survivors of the fight were facing a Hollowgast (a monster created when a Peculiar acts against his/her nature) who was intent on devouring them. The resolution of that moment was shocking and seemed overly contrived but was fitting for the story arc. The next 48-72 hours were relentless for Jacob and his crew as they searched for their missing companions and mentors.
As they searched London the side streets and familiar sights were welcoming while holding the potential for danger. Eventually, Jacob and his crew meet Sharon, a peculiar Peculiar who would take them through a loop to The Devil’s Acre, “the most retched slum of Victorian England,” where their friends were taken. This is the location of many addicted, conniving, thieving, untrustworthy Peculiar who could not “fit in” anywhere else. Its topography is the stuff of nightmares, its mysteries dark and plentiful and its intent is deception – all-in-all the perfect location for the final show down of “good” and “evil.” In that final confrontation the young Jacob learns the power of wounds and the reality that some hurts will not heal because the one harmed chooses to hold onto the injury.
The last twenty-two pages may be the best writing of the series. The story is brought full-circle finding Jacob back where he started. The dangers he now faces, in many ways, are the most perilous of all. His definitions of “trust,” “love,” “protection” are challenged beyond comfortable limits by those who had the responsibility to teach him those concepts and protect him by their use. The book ends with “closure” but that doesn’t stop Mr. Riggs from leaving some questions unanswered.
This is a Young Adult series and therefore has no explicit sex (what desire that is displayed is¬ reflective of the furtive steps of teenagers experiencing their first romance), harsh language (there is some “colorful” language, however) but some of the details of the violence & its aftermath are quite graphic. As with the previous novels, this novel is illustrated with antique photographs collected from yard sales and flea markets; there seems to be fewer in this volume, but the ones present bring depth to the story, lending it a “sepia” hue.
I will miss the Peculiar Children who were watched over by Ms. Peregrine. Actually, I will be more alert for the company of Peculiars in my present world. If I gleaned anything from this fictional series it is that being “peculiar” means ones power is unique. Such a realization raises the question of, “Just how peculiar am I?”

Not peculiar enough in some ways, too peculiar in others...

While I'm a fan of Mrs. Peregrine and all her children, I found book 3 to be lacking just a bit. There were too little of the parts that made the first two books special (peculiar children, for example), and too much of the stuff that made the first two books odd (the story written to match vintage photographs instead of the vintage photographs used to compliment the story, for example). Book 3 was full of those little annoyances that sink otherwise good books--loose strings that don't get resolved, characters of significance written off to unsatisfactory endings, and a sluggish plot that don't got to the meat until the last 15% of the book to name a few.

I was very pleased with the series conclusion, however, and that is the saving grace of Library of Souls.

Fans of the series are going to read the last book in the trilogy no matter what. If you haven't picked up book one yet, I say go for it. There is enough fun to be had that make this peculiar journey worth the ride.

A gimmick that fades like old photos

The first book in the series was a creative tour de force, using a series of odd old photos as the springboard for some atmospheric, enthralling flights of the imagination. I was sold on it, still am.

The old-photo gimmick began to wear a little thin in the second book, but it inspired the writer enough to hold my attention. The flaw in the second was that it was half a book, leaving the reader stuck with a rather bald half plot.

In "Library of Souls," the photo gimmick utterly failed, and Riggs was left to create a final novel that had nothing to drive it forward but its plot. Implausible circumstances, nick-of-time coincidences, Jacob's magical ability to exert a little mind-control ju-ju over the hollows, even a suspension of the novel's own rules to make the hero and heroine magically become the same age and thus save their relationship.

I had the distinct feeling that Riggs was slogging his way through the writing (as I was the reading). He tried to milk a one-book gimmick into a trilogy and it just didn't work.
