About the Author
John Davis has been described as “a triathlete meets John Muir.” He is a cofounder of Wildlands Network, former editor of the journal Wild Earth, program officer at Foundation for Deep Ecology, conservation director of Adirondack Council, and ongoing volunteer land ranger in Split Rock Wildway. John lives in Essex, New York.

A disappointing hodgepodge of name dropping and disconnected descriptions.

I am disappointed.
Instead of a journey chronicling his canoeing, kayaking, biking and hiking these thousands of miles as a unifying means of describing the current, possible, or necessary additions to an Eastern wildlife corridor, we are given a hodgepodge of conservationist names and descriptions of various wildlife refuges or areas sorely in need of conservation.
Davis occasionally mentions his trek and the need for a wildlife corridor, for one unfamiliar with the areas, I have no idea from reading this how these areas are connected or fail to connect.
And this is surprising, since apparently he was an editor, that he doesn’t give the reader a systematic route governed by his ‘trek’ that such a wildlife corridor could or almost exists.
I had thought that Davis’s trilogy would be similar to Peter Jenkins’ WALK ACROSS AMERICA and THE WALK WEST, instead it is over seasoned with name dropping and disconnected descriptions of various places.
Given this, the reader wonders why he just didn’t visit these places rather than create a year long burden on his wife and son – or visit these places with them – since visiting places seems to be what this is all about.
This does not come up to the high standard of the Island Press.

A heroic journey to help our country

The premise - amazing, and mainly for the DOING of the vision. John Davis is the willing participant, but we are the richer for his efforts and his sacrifice to do this journey, to follow this vision of a connected, natural landscape; recording its inhabitants, both historic and present day, John gives us a real sense of the continuity of nature from Florida to Canada. His writing can be simple, maybe too simple, and the story is so straightforward that readers may want for greater literary depth, but the again, the premise, the reason, and the actions taken truly are heroic, as he is breaking new ground, and traveling with a purpose, while recording and speaking that purpose along the way.

connecting with people, too

John Davis is a conservationist who bikes, hikes and paddles his way from Florida thru Smokey Mountains in this volume, one of three. This is a nice travelogue with many shout outs to other authors and their books for your supplemental reading pleasure. Davis offers observations and solutions as well as personal anecdotes and wildlife factoids throughout the text. Some nice photos, this will be a handbook for the outdoorsman finding their way to these areas, and a reference for the concerned naturalist. There is a place on the shelf for this one!
