Not for me

I didn't love this book because I couldn't move past the fact that the H stayed in a relationship with his ex for 5 years even though he knew after a year he didn't love her. For most of the 5 years he was very attracted to the h but remained with the ex. The h was in love with him but couldn't do anything about it so she dated lots of other men during this time. It made the H seem really weak in my eyes because he continued for so long in a bad relationship. These two main characters eventually have a one night stand at the wedding of the main characters in 'Road to Reason' but the h doesn't want to be the H's rebound girl so she ignores his messages and texts and they don't see each other for a few months.

The other thing I really didn't like is that the H built himself a house years before and he had a number of other women there including his ex but it was important to him that the h like his house because it meant so much to him. I found that a bit much because most women wouldn't love the fact that their predecessors had history with the house. It's hard to explain but the H had a 5 year relationship with another woman, which included the house (even though the ex didn't like the house) and so for me I would've liked to see him design and build something new for the two of them. After all he's an architect and shareholder in a construction company along with his twin brother. Anyway I didn't love the premise of the book at all.

Wonderful Thoughtful Must Read

This is a wonderful story of two adults that are attracted to each other but the timing isn't right so they pine for each other. When the timing works for them to finally act on the attraction they do. It's so nice to read of 2 adults that slowly realize how much they mean to each other and work on their own insecurities. The two try to become a team and talk thru what's bothering them and don't just make assumptions. They didn't meet and fall in love two seconds later. The attraction was there but they truly worked on making it real and lasting. It was so nice to read about the reoccurring characters from other books and see how their lives are progressing, but that didn't mean you couldn't follow along with this story. I've devoured each of these books and can't wait for more. I love how realistic this seems and how touching and true the characters are. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. These opinions are solely my own and I was not compensated in any way.

Loved It!

Phil and Sophia have had a secret attraction for one another for years, but have hidden it well from each other and everyone else. One night they come together, and then have regrets afterward. Sophia wants to take some time apart and gather herself, but Phil isn’t about to let her go. Not after he has waited so long for her.

Sophia is upfront, with a "I've got the world in my hand" attitude. She knows what she wants and how to get it. Phil is quiet and considerate, almost to the point he is taken advantage of by women in his past. Then time and opportunity have finally brought them together again and they decide to give it another chance. Slowly their love builds. There are stumbles along the way, but nothing that the two of them couldn’t handle.

It’s a wonderful story about real life problems, and how two people can handle them if they work together. As always, there was plenty of humor and a few tears in the book. I can’t wait to read Alec’s story next.

Very wordy and repetitive

This book is very wordy and repetitive. Take this intro: "Chapter 1: Memory. Welcome to the first chapter of this book. Just like most first chapters go, this one will be dedicated towards making you familiar with the concept and variations of the concept of memory. This chapter will lay the foundation of everything that you are going to encounter in the next some chapters." That's an entire paragraph that says almost nothing.

Outside of being insanely wordy, the author uses metaphors and examples so strange I have to wonder where he's really from. In what place do the suburbs have "rag pickers" that sell drugs? In the section on student learning he talks about students "mugging things up" and subjects being "rot-learned". I assume that's slang in some English speaking area outside the U.S.?

Some weird typos like "Food if life" make this hard to follow as well.

Almost surprisingly the book does become useful in the last 20 percent or so. The section on literary devices for improving memory, is quite informative.

Very informative and helpful

I have this issue for years and this books gave some great tips that I will employ. The author gave an explanation as to what memory really is and its classification. Primary and Secondary. I have always been interested in learning new things and become so frustrated when I forget. Chapter one introduce you to memory and the other chapters talk about the food we eat along with meditations. I believe that this book will provide you with the tools you need to help better your memory.

Having taught learning strategies in many colleges and universities, I'm somewhat qualified to review this book. Firstly, it is wordy but I enjoyed it. For those who take time to read it, cover-to-cover, you'll undoubtedly be better off for the experience. I also like the way this author contributes to the subject rather than merely expressing the same old ideas without any personalization. What did I learn? Having shared the stage with top speed readers and memory experts, I never happened to run across the phrase, "Mug Up," (British) meaning to cram for a test. Nor have I ever learned the original name of the all-time greatest memory strategy (I'll leave this for you to find in the book). Apparently, this author has done more (or different) research than most of the '2.99 multi-book authors' here on Amazon. Another thing I really liked was the chapter on "Summarization." This was very well done, as the author really drove home the importance of working new information into your brain. And lastly, I am very happy the author included "teach it to learn it!" (I hate to confess it: But the idea of "those who can't do, teach" was the underlying reason I became a learning expert.) The only two points that are discouraging are: 1. (again) The wordiness. Parts of this book could have been expressed in about 1/3 the words, and 2. The specific 'how-to' deeply understand a subject and clarify complex information is missing. This point, in my opinion, is the most vital point on learning and seems to be the 'missing link' to most all current books on accelerated learning, memory and speed reading. However, I did enjoy my time with "Learning: Exact Blueprint." Thanks, Angel Greene.

Another amazing book by Art Ludwig

I recommend that you get the 3 companion books on greywater treatment "Create an Oasis", "Branched Drain Greywater Systems" and "Builder's Greywater Guide". The information in these volumes will keep most of us far more informed than most of the regulators, the system builders, and the experts-in-theory. These volumes are real-world gems.
Art Ludwig has cut to the core of wastewater issues. He's obviously done all of his homework, mulled-over the variables, and come up with a common sense, economically reasonable, environmentally responsible approach to wastewater. I expect to save money that I would have spent on a post-septic tank, aerobic unit that would seemingly have been ecologically responsible; but because of the technological overkill, ultimately that system would have defeated my altruistic environmental concerns.
The sheer volume of information in each of his greywater books puts other sources to shame. Each volume is very well written, being clear, amusing, and concise. I can't imagine improving these books, other than keeping the information updated with future editions.
These books talk the talk and walk the walk better than anything else that I've seen. Buy a set for yourself, a set for your neighbors, and a set for the regulators.

Don't treat home without it

In the annals of 'appropriate' technology Art Ludwig's work stands out as a no-nonsense guide to getting it right the first time. Ludwig has been-there-done-that-and-bought-the-T-shirt. Instead of unprocessed data mixed with wishful thinking he gives fifty pages of distilled results. He explains in plain english what works, what doesn't and why. Clear technical descriptions allow professional contracters or do-it-yourselfers to design, build and operate graywater systems under varied conditions. In our years of related international work we've met only a few practitioners who combine experience with clarity. This guide reflects such rare talent. Don't treat home without it.
Doug Mulhall and Katja Hansen built wastewater recycling facilities worldwide and are authors of the first tropical wastewater recycling guide to be published by the European Commission.

Although code requirements for plumbing don't change all that often, I always make sure to own the most recent edition of this classic DIY book. Unlike books from any other publisher, Black & Decker books are regularly updated to include the most recent information, and each edition adds whatever is latest and greatest in the world of DIY. I have now owned all six editions of this book, and the investment has been a good one, as it's no exaggeration to say that I save many times the cost of the book by doing my own repairs. If you question this, just call a plumber and get a bid for him to come and replace your kitchen faucet and garbage disposer. And after the shock wears off, have a look at this book to see how easily you can do it yourself. I have many books on home DIY, and this one is one of the very best.

I picked up a few black & decker books from ...

I picked up a few black & decker books from amazon prior to purchasing our first home. It's definitely a fixer upper. We knew there'd be trouble. Immediately there was. This book has allowed us to sail through the worries of shoddy plumbing with much greater understanding and the ability to do basic repairs. We still called a plumber for the big stuff, but at least I understood what he was doing.

View in-hand before buying-

It's best if you have done some minor plumbing before. The book doesn't explain how to remove a push-pull
bathroom faucet core, for instance, or go into any detail how to replace a garbage disposal. I'm giving this
book to a friend that knows something about plumbing already. The complete book of home Wiring has a
much better method of instruction for that application. The book did show garbage disposal replacement, but
didn't go into enough detail for someone like myself who has very limited plumbing experience. Hence my
recomendation for someone with plumbing knowledge already.

I loved that this book was so long

I loved that this book was so long. It is a very valuable guide to study more Spanish, and when I have the time, I might go over all these examples in more detail. I love languages, and Spanish has definitely been one of the ones I’ve been trying to perfect. The context was a great idea, but the conjugations were missing. That would be a nice addition (tip to the writer). Great read, and helpful to master Spanish.

Succinct and comprehensive

The instructions are clear, short and designed to help you sort out the most important factors. The author has chosen and organized examples that highlight and help you remember the key points. I go abroad regularly to Spanish-speaking countries and I study Spanish on the plane but never speak it at home so over the years I have tried a lot of textbooks. This is one of the most succinct and comprehensive.

This book is a waste of pixels

This book is a waste of pixels. Anyone interested in such a book would be much better off with 501 Spanish Verbs. The context is a single sentence and the infinitive of the verb is often used, which gives less information that a conjugated form. As I recall, the book was free, which is what it was worth.

The Illustrated Dictionary of North American Locomotives explores the story of railroads and their motive power. Giant beasts of iron and steel once roamed the land. Their descendents still race across the country.

The Illustrated Directory of North American Locomotives charts the progress of motive power on America's railroads from 1830 until the present. Its 432 pages illustrate a wide variety of grand and humble locomotives from the steam powered Puffing Billy types of the "Early Days" chapter, to the mighty Allegheny class steamers that were used to haul coal for the American industry in the "Steam in Charge" chapter. Technical specifications are given for each engine type and the book is fully illustrated with both black & white and color photos. The book goes on to show the progress of Diesel Power, including the output of General Electric and General Motors electromotive division (EMD) from the 1920s to the present. Ultimately, the book also explores the Electric Power that powers so many of today's railways.

Most pages poorly copied and paraphrased from Wikipedia

This book is basically Wikipedia pages, but cut down and poorly edited, resulting in lots of factual errors. Why pay for something you can read for free on wikipedia, where it isn't mindlessly cut down to the point where there are giant holes in the article?

Good resource for manipulative medicine

I am a 2nd year Osteopathic Med Student and purchaced the book b/c it was was required for the course.

The atlas contains several hundred useful techniques and what makes it nice is it provides step by step instructions for each technique with accompanying pictures that make the instructions easy to understand and memorize for exams.

This book will be a useful resource to remember many techniques throughout my career. I wish they offered it in hardcover b/c I will use it for a long time to come

Got me through my Recertification Boards!

Thought this book was very well presented. The pictures were very clear. I was really able to go back and relearn/review a lot of techniques I was rusty on for my Family Practice Recertification Boards. I did deduct a star because how the book was organized was a bit confusing at times, and so I had to flip all around the place. But the pictures were really well done and the arrow made it very clear HOW the techniques were done. I also really liked that it gave variations on each technique, so that you could find the one that worked best for you or in a specific situation.

A Fun Look at How Things Are Really Invented

I am an Engineer, and have always had an interest in the history of technology and invention. I never cease to be amazed how things are invented by the “wrong” people; how someone trying to solve one problem inadvertently solves a completely unrelated “problem”; or how problems that no one knew existed are “solved”. Gavin Weightman examines a few famous inventions and how they came about.

=== The Good Stuff ===

* The author would make the case that, while there is no such thing as a typical path to invention, there is a common thread among many of the world’s greatest breakthroughs. The initial discovery, the “aha moment” often comes from a total amateur, or someone not skilled in the things he is inventing. Later, after the pioneer has proven that something is possible, persons more skilled in the particular technology take over and refine and perfect the technology. For example, Marconi, who “invented” transatlantic radio transmission, never could articulate how it worked. It is not obvious that he cared.

* The book examines a number of “earth-changing” inventions such as television, powered flight and the cellular phone. In each case, the original article built upon many previous discoveries and inventions, and persons or companies other than the original inventor later developed a consumer technology. As an example, while Philo Farnsworth likely invented the modern television, it was David Sarnoff and a few hundred people at RCA that made it into a consumer friendly technology.

* The author does a nice job of explaining the genius of the inventions discussed, but without turning the book into a technical journal. The scientific and technical terms used should be understandable by anyone with a high-school education. Weightman writes in an easy-to-read style, and keeps the narrative informal and easy-to-read. He also does an excellent job of tying together various parts of the story, and helping the reader sort through the many conflicting claims for each invention.

=== The Not-So-Good Stuff ===

* The only complaint I have is that Weightman creates some arbitrary boundaries around inventions in order to support his theory. For example, in discussing the invention of a cell phone, the author describes how the work of Marconi, Bell, Faraday and others all went in to the various radio and telephony technologies that make up the modern cell phone. But, I would argue that the most important part of the cell phone is the cheap and ubiquitous switching networks behind it. This is-the technology that lets me use hundreds of hours of airtime for a nominal cost. And that wasn’t the work of a single inventor, but entire industries.

* A similar argument could be made for how one determines when an invention is really “invented”. The Wright Brothers flew a couple hundred feet at Kitty Hawk. Is that really an airplane? Sure, it was the proof-of-concept, and had a number of “eureka” moments contained in it and was the springboard for F-18’s and 747’s. But, on its own, it was about as useful as a kite.

=== Summary ===

My objections are mild and perhaps nitpicky. I enjoyed the book, and learned a few things that I never knew before about any number of famous inventions. It is certainly a fun read for any geek, or wanna-be geek, and the pages flew by way too soon.
