A Worthwhile Investment

I bought the 2009 Edition of this book and used it to self-study for the AP Psychology Exam. Studying from this book, and nothing else (for only a couple weeks leading up to the test), I was able to confidently take the exam and score a 5. This "Cracking The AP..." series of books are very good overall, but I noticed the Psychology one to be particularly well organized and concise. They give you all the information you need and none that you don't. I can attest that this book is all you need to get a 5 on the AP test.

Best Study Guide for the exam!!

As a junior in high school, I took a one semester AP Psychology course in the fall which provided a mediocre understanding of the subject. With the amount I learned in class I would get a 2 or possibly a 3 on the AP Exam. I purchased this book a month before the exam and when I was finished with it, I felt like I was an expert at AP Psychology! All the terms I had learned with no meaning I now understood with depth! When it was time to take the actual exam, I felt as if it were only a Medium difficulty test (in comparison to other AP tests I've taken) and was confident I would receive a 4 or 5 on the exam. I ended up getting a 5 on the exam thanks to this book mainly! Nowadays I purchase AP Princeton Review books to just read the material and expand my knowledge on various subjects...way better than teachers could teach them.

Long story short, I highly recommend this book.

Great as an extra resource

I purchased this for my son. He appreciated having a second resource to the Barron's book. He did say that the tests were easier than the Barron's though - so perhaps fairwarned so there are no surprises!

He also like the Barron's flashcards.

A highly entertaining read! Most amazing to me is the way the author effortlessly weaves pearls of wisdom from his years in the start-up community throughout. The book is full of good advice for anyone thinking about starting a company or already in the start-up world - but it's so masterfully communicated, you barely realize you've just absorbed the equivalent of many hours worth of good advice. In fact, you finish feeling totally empowered to take on the thrills and challenges of building a business, and somehow feel you've been ready for it all your life!

Live vicariously

Week after week, I listen as entrepreneur after entrepreneur tells me of their frustrations working at their startup. Time after time, I think, Geez, this would make a great book, a great movie. Eliot's done it. He's turned their intrigue, the bitterness, the backstabbing, the crazy-assed dysfunction into a helluva a good read. The good news is that no one really gets killed. The great news is that we all get to live out those fantasies.

Thrilling Startup Novel

A startup thriller? I remember being slightly skeptical when I heard "Uncommon Stock" fell under this genre. How can a story about starting a new business be read with anything more than lukewarm disinterest?
Well, I was wrong. I was blown out of the water by this fascinating, fun, and yes, thrilling novel about friendships, personal growth, and being an entrepreneur in the startup industry.
The main character, Mara, is smart as a whip and her voice comes through clearly as she adventures equally on bikes, climbs, and learning about the world of startups.
This story not only surpassed my expectations, but I've found myself thinking about what will happen in the next installment. It's suspenseful, informative, and even poignant. I can't wait to share this with friends and read the next edition, Version 2.0!

I only need the yacht.

Sailing is not just hop on a boat and start the engine, it is much more complex and many accidents can happen if you do not know how to do it. This guide has been very useful, I loved the detail of writing the history of navigation and of course all the factors to consider when boarding a boat or yacht. This book also teach us a lot (my husband and i) it gave me the reason because I was sure that was not so easy to navigate. You must be careful, know about yout boat and respect the sea. I loved!

The reader is taken through the steps from painting a clear pre-brief weather picture to placing the call to Flight Service to get that all-important briefing. She even provides some insight on how to handle the call to get the most out of your discussion with the specialist! As an added bonus, Delia includes a few personal accounts of actual briefings she has handled to drive home this very important and potentially lifesaving topic. Everything is tied up nicely with some of the features from which you can benefit by using the Lockheed Martin FSS online service. This guide has something for every pilot and I would highly recommend it to anyone who is just learning or one who desires a fresh perspective on the topic.

if you are a recent VFR student pilot in training or maybe a lowtime VFR private pilot and aviation weather sources (such as 800 wx brief) are very new to you, then the book will have lots of value to you. though still a VFR student pilot myself, I am very used to checking those sites and thus it was more of a review for me.

About the Author
Ori Schibi is President of PM Konnectors, a Toronto-based privately held corporation. This author and speaker is an instructor and part-time professor, Project Management Professional (PMP), and certified PRINCE2 (Practitioner), with an MBA from York University. He co-founded the PMI Southern Ontario Chapter Business Analysis Community.

Cheryl and Ori nail it! It's readily apparent that they've done their research and developed a book that focuses on a critical need in the industry. If you want to learn about the practice of Business Analysis then I recommend you read "Business Analysis for Practitioners: A Practice Guide" but if you are a BA or a PM and want to learn how to collaborate better with your partner to drive better business outcomes for your organization then "Effective PM and BA Role Collaboration; Delivering Value through Projects and Programs Successfully" is an essential book to add to your professional development library. I started reading my copy this weekend and appreciate Cheryl and Ori's perspective and experiences as well as the research and thought they put into developing the book. Well done!

This is a great book/tool for those who are either project manager or business analyst that want to improve upon their skill sets. The book incorporates what are the best practices for each role and is well written because the co-authors are able to write from the perspectives of a PM (Ori) and BA (Cheryl) because that's what they are, that's the job they've done for many years and it shows in the writing. While you can read this from end to end, the authors themselves state that one can reference the individual chapters as needed which is where I think this book shines as it is to me an even better reference. Were one to make a class on this type of material, I would offer this book as the course textbook.

Among other things, one of the problems a pilot should tackle is learning to fly. Countless deluded young men, yearning for a career in aviation, have the sadly mistaken idea that that is all there is to it. A few hundred hours of patient application, the acquired ability to handle a ship with skill and ease - and presto!... wings and gold braid... and the Airlines only too grateful for the privilege of granting one a commission! To those misguided young men I say, "Son, go back to the farm before Dad changes his mind." There is no easy way.

Ability to fly is a step in the right direction - but the most elementary one in our whole curriculum. In a few years Junior will learn to fly before he graduates from high school. Countless millions will line up once every year all over the world to renew their pilot's certificates - much the same as motorists do to-day. There is no pay-off on arts or crafts which are the common accomplishment of the masses. A transport pilot is, and always will be, however, a highly sought, highly paid individual specialist - because he is a master craftsman in his trade.

"Well," you ask, "what has he got that I haven't got?" That's exactly what I propose to tell you in these pages. "Weather sense," for one thing, a knowledge line squalls and thunderstorms and icing conditions stable and unstable air masses - of cold fronts, and dewpoint, and all the odds and ends that go to make up the science of meteorology.

He is an expert navigator, and understands how to plot headings and bearings. He has an expert knowledge of wind and drift problems. He is thoroughly conversant with such things as Azimuth, Isogonic lines, and Great Circle Tracks. And right here, let us definitely emphasize that the latter in no way refer to those affairs that railway trains run to and fro on. The bird who specializes in following railway lines around from place to place is not a navigator, but an opportunist. When the tracks go in a tunnel, he is lost and has to go home. His only means of getting a ship across open water is a matter of pure good fortune - if there happens to be a ferry boat going his way!

A transport pilot knows his ship and his engine. Their airworthiness is a matter on which the lives of his passengers depend as much as on his own skill and knowledge - so he conscientiously superintends their service and maintenance. He understands fuel-air ratio, and all that sort of thing, and knows how to get the last ounce of power and the most miles out of a given volume of gasoline. He is familiar with all the invisible forces and couples that act on an airplane in flight and he knows when his ship has been subjected to any abnormal stresses that may lead to a structural strain.

In other words, he is the type of skipper one flies behind with utmost confidence - based on assurance that he not only rates officially a Grade A Pilot and Navigator, but is a thorough technician as well, completely versed in every last-minute detail of his profession Both On The Ground And In The Air.

"But," you may point out, "I have no ambition to become an airline captain. I am only interested in learning to fly as a private pilot. Is it necessary that I should learn all this technical stuff as well?"

An airplane moves in a medium known as the atmosphere. This layer of air surrounding the earth for a depth of several miles is a turbulent region of shifting winds, cross currents, storms, gusts and squalls. Easily understood, superlative content

I'm a book freak: I have several--some would say too many--books on every subject I'm interested in. I have Kershner's material, I have the Thom series (great set, by the way!), and I have the funny but instructive book by Rod Machado.

These all have their different methods of knowledge transfer, mostly good. However, I find some topics improperly covered; a situation I can only attribute to language. These authors know what it is they are talking about but transferring that knowledge via the written word is difficult. One such topic, for example, is altimeter settings. With the possible exception of Trevor Thom, most of the others didn't do as good a job as they could have.

From the Ground Up is small (physically) by comparison to the manuals by Machado and Thom but it does such a good job of precisely and knowledgeably covering all the topics a prospective--and currently active--pilot needs to know that the reader does not notice! How refreshing. Reading the sections covering altimeter settings, the author(s) simply and quickly impart the essence of the topic so that I am thoroughly satisfied I completely understand.

I couldn't recommend a better book on the subject--except again for anything by Trevor Thom.

It's the standart.

Nowadays "from the Ground Up" is the standart in Flight Schools. Not a lot to add to that but that if you are a canadian student, make sure to buy the "Millenium Edition"(what is not this one) that is specific for Canadian flight instruction.

Man, I was way ahead of the curve. Able to get my license with minimum hours.
That saves money--the instructor doesn't have to spoon feed you everything.

One Soviet Pilot's War in the Skies Over Russia

"Red Star Against the Swastika" is an extremely well written and compelling story, told for the first time.

The book is one of a series of new World War II memoirs by Red Army soldiers and airmen, which provide fresh and valuable insights into the Soviet armed forces of the Great Patriotic War. It remind us that Ivan, the Red Army soldier, was a living, breathing being, who cherished life as much as his counterparts in the West and who was willing to defend his family and his homeland fanatically and lay down his life dearly for all that he loved.

In "Red Star Against the Swastika" Il-2 Shturmovik pilot Vasily Emelianenko remembers his own war against the German Luftwaffe in the skies over Soviet Russia. Developed before the Second World War for the Soviet Air Force, the Il-2 was the first plane optimized for all ground attack and close air support missions. With an armored pilot's compartment, including specially armored glass, and equipped with multiple heavy machineguns and later cannon, the Il-2 played a major role in the Red Army's defeat of the Wehrmacht in Russia.

Emelianenko flew 92 sorties against the Germans, including 80 combat missions. Shot down three times, he always managed to reach home safely, once after another pilot in his squadron landed his own Sturmovik under fire to rescue Emelianenko. For his courage and successful completion of a number of critical missions, the author was awarded the Hero of the Soviet Union, Soviet Russia's highest award.

"Red Star Against the Swastika" reminds us of the tremendous sacrifices made by Red Army soldiers and airmen to stop the Germans, even when the odds were stacked against them. "After the first weeks of the war our troops did not have enough fighters and anti-aircraft guns left," writes Emelianenko. "Consequently, squadrons flew their attacks without any cover. German aircraft had complete superiority in the air. Soviet military pilots had to pay tremendous prices, and a very few of those who began the war in summer 1941 lasted until victory came."

But, fortunately, the battle did not always go the Wehrmacht's way, and time after time, the Red Army managed to catch the Germans by surprise: "Approaching Bobruysk the Shturmoviks were flying very low. Anti-aircraft guns began to fire....The leader turned and launched the attack. Missiles hit the row of [German] bombers and exploded, tracer bullets shredded the wings with black crosses....Junkers and Messerschmitts ready for operational flights blazed up. Our aircraft came in time and did not allow the enemy planes to take off!"

By 1943 the tide of battle had shifted and the resurgent Red Army seized the strategic offensive, never to lose it again. "In the fierce cruel struggle we managed to crush the enemy that brought war to our land," remembers Emelianenko, "and there is my part of strain, blood and sweat in it." Indeed. In four years of combat, the author's ground attack aircraft division lost 717 men. Two hundred of those were from the 7th Guards Ground Attack Aircraft Regiment, Emelianenko's unit.

Victory thus came at a horrendous price. By the end of the Second World War, Soviet Russia had lost some 27 million people in the war, including ten million soldiers, sailors and airmen killed. And those that survived were changed forever: "Few people lived through the war without deep scars on their bodies and on their hearts," admits the author.

Emelianenko concludes his story with the following words; "My friends said to me then: 'Those who were killed must live in a book. People myst know about them. And write the truth only!' I have done my best."

Boring through flak and fighters. . . Cheers for the IL-2s!

The Germans Lanser called it the Butcher Bird;a Luftwaffe pilot coined the term Panzerflieger---flying tank---to describe this incredibly tough as nails fighter bomber. The Soviet IL-2s and the heroic pilots and crews who flew them at low level through the tracers and bursting shells of sharp-shooting Flak gunners deserve the West's admiration for the important and often decisive role they played in tearing the guts out of the Wehrmacht in Russia. Now you can read a book about it by someone who was there. Vasily Emelianenko flew IL-2s with his comrades in the 7th Guards Regiment, 230th Kuban Ground-Attack Division. Unlike most Russian wartime memoirs, this one isn't dripping with love for the Communist Party. It's simply a pilot's story of his experiences and the experiences of his comrades, many of whom fell victim to flak and fighter attack, in the desperate life and death struggle waged in the East from 1941-45. Shot down numerous times, often behind enemy lines, Vasily used all his piloting and survival skills to emerge alive and victorious in the war. He is not a braggart and has no difficulties explaining what he did right or wrong in combat. The end of the book includes a list of all the 7th Guard Regiment's pilot losses,which alone is worth the price of the book. I salute Vasily's service and courage from afar. Thank you for your service in the war to defeat Hitler's Germany.

Homegrown technology and homegrown heroes

In unpretentious verse, the author matter-of-factly sets out the course of the air war across the Kuban and Ukraine in World War Two. You see clearly in these pages why pilots in Eastern Europe - be they Soviet or German - suffered the war's highest casualty rates, perhaps second only to penal battalions. At times you feel you're flying in formation with Sturmovik pilots, chasing or being chased by Messerschmidts. The author merely suggests the fear - and does it with great modesty. The book also gives a good feel for the camaraderie in Soviet Air Force, which blossomed regardless of national origin or religion, and supports the notion that the esprit de corps of the Soviet military quickly bounced back after initial disasters. The book also touches on improvements in aircraft technology and in battle tactics, and suggests that Moscow's priority was directed almost entirely to war machines over creature comforts, as where some pilots, for example, had trousers sewn from parachutes, and scrounged for food from the local population - despite having air-to-ground rockets at their disposal.

The author wrote this book late in life as a tribute to all the friends who never returned from combat missions - that is, most of his friends. The book is a simple, easy read and you learn a great deal about the Eastern Front, and serves as an admirable companion piece to something like Catherine Merridale's Ivan's War, which explores everyday life in the Soviet infantry.

Berk Writes About The Interesting Journey Of The RX3

I bought this book because I bought one of the first RX3’s off the boat and I love it. The bike has been great (excellent handling, reliable, good looking, etc) and it was reassuring to read about this diverse group of riders going 5,000 miles with no problems. Or more specifically, no motorcycle related problems.
The backstory of how the bike found its way to America was quite interesting and we are lucky that Steve and his wife (owners of CSC, the outfit that imports the bike) were willing to take the risk to bring it here. Joe also describes the pricing policy of most motorcycle dealers and why CSC is doing things differently. This rolls over to the maintenance side of things too. Great insight into the retail motorcycle industry from someone who has been around bikes for a long time.
If you are a rider who has bought into the philosophy of more cc’s means a better Adventure bike then you need to read this book. There is so much you can do with this 250 cc machine that it’s hard to justify the cost for one of those big name, big price bikes. Joe makes real world comparisons more than a couple of times in the book.
The planning and execution of the trip was portrayed well and the bikes performed amazingly. This would have been an epic ride to go on and Joe does a great job in visually illustrating the scenery and all the National Parks they visited. Joe also describes quite well the reactions of the visitors from China and Columbia to their experiences each day.
The group dynamics thing throughout the trip was fun to read about. It’s inevitable that when you throw a dozen people together for a couple of weeks stuff is gonna happen…and it did. But everyone came out ahead in the end. Get the book, it’s a great read.
It looks like Joe is going to do a similar ride in Columbia with a couple of guys from this ride and I hope he writes about that trip too.

Great book for a great bike !!!!!!

I also own this motorcycle and think it is a very well built bike. I was going to say" for the price" but regardless of price , 6200 miles later, it's still very well built . This book was very informative. I was aware of some things mentioned in it as I've read lots of the forums peculiar to this bike , but this book actually gave me new info about how it came about, the behind the scene details that I found very interesting. Helped me to understand my bike and the importer CSC philosophy better . Joe has a great way of writing , keeping your interest and making you smile while reading because most of us have been there, done that, in the stories he mentions. I would definitely recommend the book to anyone considering buying the RX3 as a preview and way to get to know it before it arrives to you. Great read.

In all honesty if you are buying this prior to owning a Zongshen RX3 250 consider yourself forewarned .... this book may lead to the expenditure of about 4 grand on it's subject matter - the RX3!!! The book is an excellent story of how the American RX3 came to be and it's first 2 public shakedown endurance rides. More than that it tells the story of a small company meeting a much desired niche in American & Canadian motorcycling dreams, a smaller sensible ADV bike of superior quality at fair pricing with top shelf customer service. It is bringing together a brotherhood of like minded riders in adventure and dream fulfillment. Can't thank Steve and company enough for the willingness to take the chance and without doubt can't thank Joe enough for tell the story! I hope it isn't over - not by a long shot.
