About the Author
Ravi Jain is Dean and Professor of the School of Engineering and Computer Science, University of the Pacific, Stockton, California. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Civil Engineering from California State University, and a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Texas Tech. He studied public administration and public policy at Harvard, earning an M.P.A. degree and did additional graduate studies at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Mining and mineral processing has been critical to human development from the Bronze Age to our current Electronic Age, which is dependent on the mining of rare earth elements, often in countries with few environmental controls. This book discusses mining and mineral processing with an eye toward learning from past lessons and developing sustainable mining practices for the preservation of the future.
The book catalogs in details approaches that have been applied successfully in the US and Europe to minimize mining impacts and serves as a primer for practitioners in emerging countries that are only beginning to regulate the environmental impacts of mining. The book contains a trove of information on sustainability analysis, including guidance on environmental management system implementation and environmental auditing that is of use to environmental managers overseeing mine operations in any country. The book is detailed, but well organized and easy to read, and is therefore an excellent reference for environmental engineering and management students. Others who might be interested in the book are social scientists and environmental advocates who are interested in mining specifically or sustainability practices in general.

I, Dr. Paul Chugh, am a mining engineer and have been associated with teaching, research, and field experience in coal mining, coal processing, health and safety, and environmental management issues for the past 50 years. I have been closely associated with at least 15 mine feasibility studies in the USA. My field experience extends in several countries, including USA, India, China, Australia, Poland, Germany, Czech Republic, and Indonesia. I had the opportunity to review this book while still in the draft form and then again in the final form.
I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning in depth the resource assessment, minerals extraction, minerals processing and associated environmental issues and how to deal with them effectively. One can learn from proven practices from around the developed countries that can help develop best practices in your own region to manage sustainability issues. There is wealth of well thought out statistics that would help in environmental management, and environmental impacts assessment. It is a very good reference book that can help you channel your energies deeper into different aspects of environmental management issues. It is well organized and I would strongly recommend it for university libraries that have strong undergraduate and graduate programs in environmental management and policy development for mineral and natural resources.
