1st Edition Book, not perfect, but still a good buy.

Pros:
- Book is well divided and easy to use
- Detailed explanations (better than Princeton Review's "plug it in" method)
- Good value. $11 for over 700 pages
- Good insight into the essay section
Cons
- Extremely weak grammar. No explanations on grammar usage or why a certain choice is correct
- Answer explanations take out a huge chunk of the book. (Pages 525-729)
- Some typos. I've marked down a few so far. Pg 667, B should be D, etc. There are a few more.
- Only 1 practice test in the book. You have to register online to receive the other two.
- Another reviewer pointed this out: that the stats section was weak. Imo, the sections are designed for review--not to learning. However, I could see a student that has no idea what stats are struggling.
- No scoring (this is not Kaplan's fault, but because the collegeboard hasn't released a scoring scale yet)
Difficulty Level:
7/10. I expect the actual SAT to be a little more difficult
Should I take the current or new SAT?
If you're a member of the class of 2017, I recommend the current one if you are concerned with math. The new SAT adds new topics such as stats, trig, data analytics, etc. Additionally, I found that many "common core, real life scenario" problems took longer for students to read. Who cares if Bob owns a barber shop in Texas????
Overall, I'll give plaudits to Kaplan for being the first to release a review book for the new SAT. Is it perfect? No. In fact, I would recommend that you wait for the 2nd edition if you are in the class of 2018.

I Needed This About 30 Years Ago!

This is an outstanding prep book for the SAT exam.
Besides having 3 complete practice exams (1 in the book; 2 online), the best part is that there is easy-to-follow explanations to the answers for the practice questions.
Our son is taking the old format SAT this October and then will use this book for the new SAT format test in January. Hopefully, this book will show an improvement in his scores.
One other benefit is that the book explains the difference between the old and new formats, which is very helpful for those students taking both the old and new SAT test.
Great value for the potential benefit of higher scores.

Get Kaplan New SAT 2016 Premier Instead

Update 10/28/15: Now that I have Kaplan New SAT Premier 2016 with 5 Practice Tests: Personalized Feedback + Book + Online + DVD + Mobile (Kaplan Test Prep) and was able to do a side by side comparison I recommend Premier not this one. Why? You get more for your money with video lessons and tips via DVD. Premier is larger at 1337 pages vs. 691. Premier has 2 tests inside and 3 online and this book has 1 in the book and 2 online.
Original review: This is the first Kaplan book published for the NEW SAT which will begin to be used in 2016. Since the test's redesign it is important to use a prep book that aligns with the new test.
All of Kaplan's test prep books use the same approach. What makes the Kaplan books unique is that they use the Kaplan method for how to approach each question, how to read it, choosing a strategy for answering it, double checking the answer. So the section begins by teaching The Kaplan Method then it launches into an explanation of what that section of the test is about and the different types of questions to test that topic. The explaining part is labeled prepare and then there is perform where it is done a little. If confused by the topic there is an extra practice section that follows.
There is one full practice tests inside the book and two more that you can access online when you register your book's serial number. The online account offers adaptive practice based on your online performance. If you want even more practice with paper tests, Kaplan has released a different book that is only practice tests, with NO review of content.
All Kaplan books promote their "higher score guaranteed" policy which is explained in more detail on the inside front cover. Basically if your score does not improve after using the book you can get a refund on the purchase price of your book but you have to file that refund within 90 days of buying the book. Thus this policy negates the general recommendations of SAT prep which is to start at least a year before and do a shorter period of practice daily or multiple times a week spread over many months instead of a cram in one or three months. I don't like their money back guarantee as I know it takes a couple of months to get the result so the timeframe requirments are not fair or really possible.
I rate this 5 stars = I Love It based on the book itself and I put my dislike of their money back guarantee's too short timeframe to the side in that judgement. This book is intended for self-study at home. If the book is not used as Kaplan recommends it won't help the student. They need to get familiar with the test (which also helps reduce stress and anxiety at test taking day), learn and know the content and then be able to practice with practice tests enough to feel comfortable with the test taking process so they have more brain power to focus on selecting corrrect answers. If a student is not self-motivated or has poor self-discipline with practice, they should take classes since those have firm deadlines and attendance requirements. Once you register this book you will see Kaplan pitching to pay to join a Kaplan class. The great thing about test prep book is if the student is willing to self-teach and self-prepare it's all laid out for them here for a low cost compared to the cost of classes. Some schools offer low cost prep classes but they are often short and not customized or as intense as the paid classes by the various test prep companies.
