About the Author
Markus Imhoof is an Oscar-nominated Swiss filmmaker and director of the international award-winning documentary More Than Honey. He is descended from a long line of beekeepers. Claus-Peter Lieckfeld co-founded and edited the German ecological magazine Natur. He currently works as a freelance writer, and in addition to co-authoring several books, has written numerous articles on nature. Both live in Berlin.

A short, lively read with an amazing amount of information. Maybe the book will create a buzz--honey bees are in great danger.

I found this book by accident, looked at it and proceeded to read it in one sitting (two hours or so). The book relates to a 2012 documentary film by Imhoof, so I'm assuming he did not write the basic text. The last chapter is by Imhoof and describes how he made the film. This is an excellent chapter and might well form a text in and of itself in the peculiarities of making a nature documentary.

The book itself is not long, but it's full of information and I think it would be a good place to start for anyone not knowing much about honeybees. The writing overall is extremely good, written in a participatory journalistic style. The book is translated from the original German, so the translator deserves credit as well.

Start with economics, bees pollinate such staples as apples, peaches, cherries, cucumbers and almonds. Almonds are explored at some length since if bees die out the crop does too (pollination by hand would be enormously expensive). That's the crux of the book, that bees are worth many billions of dollars to agriculture, and bees are in fact in trouble. The trouble is parasites, and diseases such as brood disorder, but also something rather new, CCD, colony collapse disorder. Some researchers claim that CCD is caused by certain pesticides, hotly contested by corporations such as Bayer, maker of a disputed pesticide.

Individual chapters could be read separately if a reader chooses. Chapter 2 discusses "Bees in an ideal world," essentially how bees function, and this is admirably written, complex behaviors made highly readable. Chapter 3 discusses bees in the lab, that is studied by scientists, and some remarkable information is in this chapter,. Bees dance to communicate, as is well known, but the dance is performed in total darkness, so how is the information conveyed, by sound and smell? Beeswax turns out to be an amazingly complex material comprised of 200 different compounds of saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons, acids and esters (the writer comments these are only three kinds of the many complexities).

Chapter 4 describes "customized" bees, that is bee breeding. Chapter 5 discusses "humans as bees", including humans hand-pollinating plants, but also making fake honey. It also notes that beekeeping in urban areas is new and that such bees don't have to deal with the serious pesticide threat common in fields and rural agriculture. Chapter 6 looks at untamed bees, mostly the story of the Africanized bee. This story gets more complex than I have read elsewhere. Africanized bees produce far more honey per hive than the European honeybee, and are resistant to some pests, and have turned Brazil into a major honey producer--at the cost of increasing yearly bee-caused deaths from 25 to 195 (the information is not sourced and no detail is given about it). Chapter 7 looks at bees of the future, the weakest chapter. Bees possibly may be genetically modified, or other bees may be used. Bumblebees are now used in greenhouses for tomatoes, which are "buzz pollinated," the vibrations from the bees' wings loosens pollen.

This book contains a large number of dramatic eyewitness accounts, even as it reveals new facts that will alter perception of the battle in the public’s eyes. For example, the twin-engined Messerschmitt Bf 110 was actually a good day fighter, and it performed at least as well in this role as the Bf 109 during the battle. The Luftwaffe’s commander, Hermann Göring, performed far better than has previously been his image. The British night bombers played a more decisive role than previously thought; meantime this book disproves that the German 109 pilots were in any way superior to their Hurricane or Spitfire counterparts. The author has made a detailed search into the loss records for both sides, and provides statistics that will raise more than one eyebrow. The “revisionist” version, according to which the courage and skill of the RAF airmen is “exaggerated” is scrutinized and completely shattered. There is no doubt that it was the unparalleled efforts of “The Few” that won the battle. The Germans, on the other hand, did not show the same stamina as they had on the continent. Christer Bergström has published 23 books on World War II. He specialises on World War Two and in the past has focussed on the Eastern Front. The Swedish language book on the Ardennes sold over 3,000 copies in Swedish within six months.

a 'must-have' authoritative new account

I suspect many enthusiasts must have thought that Bungay's excellent 'Most Dangerous Enemy' would be the last word on authoritative accounts of the Battle of Britain. However this new book from Swedish author Bergstrom is an excellent and largely 'new' re-telling of the story. Author of the critically acclaimed 'Black Cross/Red Star' series Christer Bergstrom enjoys a fine reputation as an historian and air war researcher. A childhood friend of German fighter leader Adolf Galland, he has enjoyed good access to German veterans and acquired much 'unofficial' material. I attended the 'launch' of this new volume at the Kent Battle of Britain museum on the 75th anniversary of the battle and found Mr Bergstrom to be a very engaging and genial character. This new 330-page A-4 hardback is an impressive work. The quality of the paper is reasonably good, the artworks are rendered by some of the best in the business and there is a good selection of interesting photos including some colour images. The text is very readable (not cluttered with details such as WNr. etc..) and the presentation is in a diary format. There are over 500 'notes' at the rear of the book.
A couple of points that struck me while dipping in and out of the contents;
- the contribution that Bomber Command made to the RAF's success in the Battle of Britain - RAF bombers operated throughout the summer over Germany and the occupied countries, kept the pressure on psychologically, directly contributing to the 'indecision' in the Luftwaffe leadership ...(London vs. the airfields).
- the 're-appraisal' of combat losses on both sides - the RAF's being much higher for the four months July to October
- the re-evaluation of the performance of the Bf 110 units, which enjoyed better 'kill' ratios than the 109 units; " the Bf 109's alleged superiority over the Bf 110 finds no support in these statistics.."
- on only two occasions during the battle (7 and 15 September) did the Luftwaffe put more than 300 bombers in the air. No chance of hoping to subdue a metropolis the size of London - over 1,000 sq kilometres in area even in 1940. A couple of HE bombs per sq km is all the Luftwaffe could hope to manage. This is all pretty minor league stuff especially in comparison with the later air battles over the Reich.
- Ultra did not provide the defenders with much 'hard' information - the British were only just learning to exploit it
- the fighter pilots of the RAF were indeed the heroes of the Battle of Britain, preventing the Luftwaffe achieving aerial superiority over south-east England - this 'revelation' goes counter to some other recent accounts by 'continental' authors who believe that a 'myth' of the The Few has been widely propagated and exaggerated..
I noticed some comments on Facebook regarding the 'editing' of the text. Personally I think the author has a style all of his own - lively, factual, one or two interesting turns of phrase, but very very readable, nothing jars and my impression is overwhelmingly positive..

A great story well told

Absolutely superb, this book is a delight to read and in all likelihood will become the all-time aerial combat reference to explain the decisive English victory in the Battle of Britain.

It's a story of numbers. Spitfires and Hurricanes shot down 1,275 German aircraft; the Me 109s and Me110s shot down 1,050 British aircraft. The British lost 997 Spitfires and Hurricanes, the Germans lost 730 Messerchmitts. Perhaps more relevant, on June 1, 1940, the British had 446 fighters, by Nov. 2, they had 746; on June 29, the Germans had 1,117 fighters, by Dec. 28, they had 755.

In other words, aircraft production is a major factor. The British had only to defend Britain; Germany had to "rescue" Italy and guard its far-flung conquests. To win, the Germans had to quickly decimate the Royal Air Force; the Wehrmacht was not equipped for sustained combat. In contrast, the British merely had to hold out until winter slowed the German offensive. For the British, the critical date was the November 1940 re-election of President Franklin Roosevelt; if Roosevelt won, the U.S. would provide much needed military supplies, raw materials and especially 100-octane aviation fuel.

As for motivation, German pilots thought the war was almost over. They had won, and weren't anxious to be "the last to die." Service in France was a vacation compared to other postings; French culture, food, wines and women were plentiful and delicious. The British were fighting a last-ditch (the Channel) defence; everything they, their families and country valued was at stake.

Bergstrom details, in day-by-day accounts, how the English succeeded. In doing so, he shoots down wartime myths without detracting from successes. The English had a single purpose; the German effort was scatter-brained, due to Churchill's brilliant skill at goading Hitler into stupid reactions.

Granted, Hitler made victory easier. Time and again, Me-109 squadrons slashed Spitfires and especially Hurricanes to pieces; but they couldn't stop the slaughter of German bombers, or the steady plane-by-plane erosion of slow-to-be-replaced German aircraft and skilled pilots.

This book is a detailed study of the battle, plus sufficient background to understand day-by-day events. It is likely Britain's most important victory since Waterloo, certainly greater than the Spanish Armada which was largely dashed by the weather. More so than Stalingrad or the Kursk salient - - it was the turning-point of World War II. Bergstrom details it with exquisite but never "more-than-you-want-to-know" skill.

Read this book, think about it, and you'll get a much better understanding of the folly, heroism and meaning of war.

Fantastic but with a government warning

In most ways this is an indispensable book for the military history enthusiast, full of elaborate detail and marvelous pictures. The author, who has done an amazing amount of primary research (, for example, interviewing a large number of living participants - many no longer with us) advanced several views that are not in the mainstream of prior thought about the Battle of Britain - first, that Goering was quite a capable commander, and came very close to winning, thwarted by the fighting spirit of the British (and the foreign pilots) , the ability of British industry to deliver new planes, and finally the pressure exerted on the home front as the British bomber command continued to bomb Germany in the face of heavy losses, forcing a change of strategy that gave Fighter Command breathing room. The second revelation is his assertion that the much-criticized Messerschmitt bf 110 was quite an effective fighter, and statistically more effective that the 109s, something I have never heard before. Rather than being withdrawn from operations, the heavily armed 110s continued until quite late in the Battle and were only withdrawn when the need for night fighters became paramount. I wish he would have taken on the topic, though, of why all of the Luftwaffe's highest scoring aces flew the 109 at this time.

Much of the book details the day to day operations of each of the units, which is valuable as history, but one has the feeling that the trees are highly visible, but the forest can't be seen. This is quite reminiscent of the writings of Clay Blair on submarine warfare, and if you like that kind of writing, you will love this book. I found it difficult to wade through at times, and the sheer number of air group designations and pilots named becomes numbing.

But - with that caveat - this is an impressive volume, and as a package, quite beautiful as well.

Encyclopedia of companies that made racing history

This book is about racing technology: UCI-approved European-style upright road racing. There are many bicycle history books that focus on the "golden era" of cycle racing just after WWII. While having so much historical information about the "golden era" that it is an education to read, this book fills a gap and gives details about recent developments including the revolution indexed shifting caused and how recent advances in position allowed Greg LeMond to win The Tour de France in 1989 and Graeme Obree to twice set the Hour record. It covers recent advances in carbon fiber, aluminum & titanium usually not covered in books on racing. This 331p book is organized to describe 49 manufacturers, each listed in separate chapters. Each company gets a few pages. It includes power-house companies, smaller, boutique companies as well as a number of important companies I had never heard of. The companies included are:

Atala, Batavus, BH, Bianchi, Billato, Bottecchia, Campagnolo, Cannondale, Cervelo, Cinelli, Colnago, Columbus, Concorde, Daccordi, De Rosa, Eddy Merckx, Flandria, Focus, Gazelle, Giant, Gios, Gitane, Guerciotti, LeMond, Litespeed, Look, Masi, Mavic, Mercian, Mercier, Olmo, Orbea, Pegoretti, Peugeot, Pinarello, Raleight, Reynolds, Schwinn, Scott, Serotta, Shimano, Specialized, SRAM, Time, Trek, TVT, Vitus, Wilier Trestina.

The story of each company is told around the bicycle racers/races won on their equipment. Eddy Merckx is described in the section on Colnago and, after a falling out, De Rosa as well as his own line of bikes. Gios is described in his own line of bikes. Fausto Coppi is described in the section on Bianchi. Greg LeMond is described in the section on Scott as well as his own line of bikes. Lance Armstrong in the section on Trek. It integrates racing history with bicycle technology well. It does an especially good job covering recent racing history with recent advances. Recent events and advances are too often overlooked in the present fashion for retro-cycling. Retro is for Civil-War re-enactors with muskets. Winning races is about speeding like a bullet.

This was written by a team of top bicycle racing magazine journalists and other bicycle book writers. It is a collection of company histories. The strengths of each company are mentioned without mentioning their weaknesses. The section on Cinelli talks about Cino's career as a racing champion but does not mention that Cino Cinelli's older brother actually founded Cinelli to make steel handlebars and later developed aluminum. Though the company continued development after Cino sold it to the Colombo family with Spinaci bars (later banned by the UCI). It does not mention how Cinelli missed out when Modolo developed their own dropped bars with a flattened section you could grip. Reynolds is described as a company without mentioning the criticism many frame-makers had that their frame tubing was thin and flexed from pedaling and the forks over-built and gave too stiff a ride.

Instead of covering topics separately, such as wind resistance or the strength of materials they are instead discussed as design features that are company successes that helped to win races. This is the only book I have seen that described how Magic Motorcycle invented the hollow crank, a company bought by Cannondale & renamed Coda that Shimano marketed as "hollowtech".

The book emphasizes complete bicycles, equipment and frames. The importance of wheel design is missing. Neither Shimano nor Campagnolo's considerable contributions to wheel design are mentioned in their chapters. Rolf, Zip, Easton and HED might have been included.

This is a big book, packed with photos, history and information on manufacturers that is easily worth a good deal more. It is accessible and I enjoyed reading it. It goes into some detail and makes for lively reading. It is a reference book and modern encyclopedia of a time overlooked in most bicycle histories; recent racing events and how they were won. The strengths of each company and their contribution to racing bicycle design are briefly covered. Each company's outline make for quick overviews. This book is extremely valuable for any professional library on bicycle design or pro shop. Shop staff will get a quick overview to the products offered for sale by them or their competitors.

Finally, the book I have been waiting for. If you are into competition or an avid aficionado this book is perfect, the great innovators and their background which makes me realize how great cycling is. Information that I was curious about the different companies that have contributed to the winners and their Bicycles in the major tours in the world. Perfect pictures of coveted Bicycles just like a book on classic cars, thanks to Rizzoli and Amazon for the quick delivery.

Professional artist Thaneeya McArdle is the creator of the best-selling 13-title Design Originals coloring book series from Fox Chapel Publishing. She is the author and illustrator of two art instruction books, Draw Groovy and The Everything Girls Ultimate Body Art Book. Based in Florida, she works in painting, drawing, and mixed media, with a special focus on vibrantly detailed whimsical art. This book includes 30 full paged illustrations to color, each illustration is a message in itself that will brighten your day and lighten your spirit, each message is surrounded and/or adorned with flowing artistic patterns of whimsical art made up of flowers, stars, hearts, geometric shapes, birds, butterflies, all artistically combined into canvasses just waiting for you to add color.

But that is not all; on the back of each illustration is another uplifting and soul stirring quote to help fortify you throughout the day. Eight fully colored example pages have been included to inspire your creativity, and 5 coloring tip pages, including a color wheel, have been added to kick start your imagination.

This is a marvelous, inspirational and uplifting book that has so much to offer, it is a must have for all colorists, coloring libraries and would make a wonderful uplifting gift to someone special. My school aged grandchildren also color and send pages from this book, instead of cards to relatives.

Love the designs, paper could be thicker.

Great designs, love the messages. The paper is not too thin but not thick enough for some markers. Great for colored pencils & gel pens. Sharpie pens are good to, Bic flare markers can bleed through and sharpie extra fine definitely do.

As a ceramic artist and educator who has occasion to work with those in the architecture and design fields, this book is highly effective as both a primer to new technologies and as a teaching tool. The respective approach to the complexities of the ceramic medium is key to provide accurate information of an ancient material used in a quickly changing world of technological applications. The authors have, themselves, "gotten their hands dirty" through using ceramics in their own research as well as in the classroom and this shows in the clear and concise overview of the exciting role ceramics plays in contemporary architecture and interior design.

About the Author
Hanqiao Zhang is an Analog Engineer at Intel and holds a PhD degree in Electromagnetics and Microwave Engineering from Clemson University. Hanqiao joined Intel Xeon product electrical validation team in 2011, where he worked on generations of Intel high-speed digital systems. He developed methodologies for validating high-speed interfaces, such as PCI Express and Quick Path Interface (QPI). Hanqiao is now a signal integrity engineer with Intel Data Center Group. He is involved in mission-critical high-performance servers signal integrity design, bring up, validation and debug.

Steve Krooswyk has been at Intel since 2003 when we joined as a signal integrity engineer for EPSD server development. In 2009, Steve transitioned into the signal integrity lead for PCI Express in Intel’s Enterprise Platform Technology Division (EPTD). In addition to server products, his experience includes involvement in the PCI Express 3.0 and 4.0 specifications. He holds a B.S. and M.S. in electrical engineering from the University of South Carolina.

Jeffrey Ou joined Intel in 1999 as an analog design engineer in CMOS RF transceiver design. In 2006, Jeffrey transitioned to Xeon processor product design team in Server Development Group (SDG) developing a serial I/O module configurable for PCI Express and Quick Path Interface (QPI). Since then Jeffrey has been involved in several generations of Xeon products from design to post silicon validation. In 2012, Jeffrey was recognized as a tech lead in SDG, and continued to develop the cutting-edge high speed serial I/O modules for server products. Jeffrey holds a PhD degree in EECS from UC Berkeley and is a member of IEEE.

Great book but not for the beginners!

This book is certainly not written for beginners! I recommend reading other books from Bogatin or more advanced ones from Hall and Heck to start this field.
However, this books covers more practical aspects of high speed channel design. It doesn't go into the math very deep but if you are already familiar with the topic, you will enjoy reading the design hints.

Photographer Christopher Herwig first noticed the unusual architecture of Soviet-era bus stops during a 2002 long-distance bike ride from London to St. Petersburg. Challenging himself to take one good photograph every hour, Herwig began to notice surprisingly designed bus stops on otherwise deserted stretches of road. Twelve years later, Herwig had covered more than 18,000 miles in 14 countries of the former Soviet Union, traveling by car, bike, bus and taxi to hunt down and document these bus stops.
The local bus stop proved to be fertile ground for local artistic experimentation in the Soviet period, and was built seemingly without design restrictions or budgetary concerns. The result is an astonishing variety of styles and types across the region, from the strictest Brutalism to exuberant whimsy.

Awesome photography book

What could be more adventurous than crisscrossing ex-Soviet Republics in search of that which has been forgotten? Hats off to the author for sticking with this project for over a decade.

An Amazing Testament To An Astonishing Architectural Niche

Christopher Herwig has produced an amazing photographic journal of an utterly unique Soviet architectural art form, the bus stop. To get these photographs Herwig traveled to 14 countries including difficult to access Moldova, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan (not to mention his treks across Ukraine, Lithuania, Latvia, Belarus and Estonia among others). Herwig's text and the introduction by Jonathan Meades are illuminating and the essay "The Bus Pavilion: A Minor Architectural Form" by Vera Kavalkova-Halvarsson is especially insightful and explains how in a sea of ugly Brutalist architecture (particularly under Khrushchev and Brezhnev) big budget construction was tightly regulated, but smaller inexpensive projects like bus stops were not considered terribly significant and flew under the radar of the bureaucrats allowing an astonishing array of creativity from mostly young designers and architects with considerable help from local communities.

I am genuinely astonished at the creativity on display here, and Herwig's photography is more than up to the challenge. The contrast between the diverse bus stops (many of which are now unserved and abandoned) and their settings are frequently amazing and definitely helped me have a more considered appreciation of this unusual architectural form as a mode of artistic expression. My favorites in the book were concentrated in Kazakhstan (particularly the unusual installation in Astana) and Lithuania, although for sheer diversity of design and astonishing concepts, the bus stops of Abkhazia (especially in Pitsunda and Gudauta) are unbeatable.

From both a photographic and architectural viewpoint, Herwig has created a truly unique gem with "Soviet Bus Stops" and I recommend it highly.

Unique and Intriguing

This is a great photo book. Definitely recommended for any Soviet history nerds. It's worth pointing out that there are no pictures of Russia, but every other Soviet satellite state is included. Served as the catalyst for an upcoming journey in the region. Unfortunately my copy came with a bent front cover and a little spot scratched off, which is a little disappointing given the price of the relatively small/short book, but that is a criticism of the seller and not the content.
