four pictures of cool hacked bikes made by other people 4
By Rapmastermarc
I got this book for free but still feel I was ripped off. This book consists of 1: the basics of bicycle maintenance 2: what different tools and parts of the bicycle are 3: four pictures of cool hacked bikes made by other people 4: detailed instructions on how to weld - "heat the metal parts up and apply welding rod" it's so simple! 5: 50 pages of instructions on how to make a handful of highly specific and pointless arduino projects.
That is all.
If you are considering buying this, simply change your $12 into pennies and chuck it at homeless people and small children, you will be contributing more to society and will gain more knowledge. Plus you can use your resulting time in prison researching how to build and hack bicycles on the internet for free.

Lots of fun, easy to follow
By A. H.
This slender volume offers a number of bicycle maintenance tips and projects to enhance your ride, ranging from illumation to Arduino-based horns. The illustrations are clear, and the directions are easy to follow. And it's all endorsed by the staff of Make, a fun magazine for people who like to do things in their own customized way.

good book, sloppy editing job
By genoa golf
The projects in the book are quite interesting. They range from simple ones like screwing on extra parts, to much more elaborate welding, soldering, adding electronics and such. It is all step by step and has photo illustrations throughout. And this is where the book fails. I did double check in case I received unfinished book - but no, my book was not marked as such, this was the final version. I think the book is in dire need of editing. The book is formatted in a way so it looks like two columns of text on each page. Most of the pictures have relevant text before the picture, but in majority of the cases the picture follows in the next column, which means in half of those cases, the picture appears on the next page. There was no need to do that, it could have been fixed with very little editing, and maybe some minor cropping of the photos - do we really need a close up picture of a wrench with white space all around it? Could we agree on a little bit less space, but have this picture go _under_ the text, not on the next page? I also found a duplicate picture of the wrench, which could have been caught by the editor if there was one. Not to mention the photo quality - in many cases the relevant part was in very busy background, should the photographer took the picture from a bit different angle, it would be much easier to see.
