About the Author
Carrie Eastman was drawn to animals and healing at a very young age. She graduated from Penn State in 1990 with an honors B.S. in wildlife science and additional focused coursework in horse production and crop and soil sciences. Today Carrie continues to study health and healing, soils, crops and nutrition, as well as conscious horsemanship and balanced hoof trimming. In her spare time, she helps to keep the farm repaired, improves her building techniques, gardens, and tinkers with old machines. She shares her home with three horses, a herd of myotonic goats, chickens, dogs, cats, fish, turtles, and of course her wonderful family.

I am so excited to have this book in my hands, The Energetic Goat! If you spend enough time in learning circles on the topic of natural and holistic farming and agriculture you will eventually hear references to dowsing, reflexology and other types of energetic healing and awareness.

Well-known veterinarian authors like Dr. Paul Dettloff, D.V.M. make reference to the effects that energy has on the body in different ways and that it can affect healing or growth. Dowsing is a way to identify optimal placement of facilities, and to avoid negative energy. Practitioners make reference to using a muscle test as an indicator of something having a positive or negative action toward healing in a body; your own or even the sick goat in front of you.

It can be a bit unnerving to realize you may have the tools in your hands, so to speak, and not know how to use them. While you may find references to these things, what you may not easily find are books that further explain this, and that provide detailed instruction to the average livestock owner. It is exciting to see that Carrie Eastman has provided exactly that in The Energetic Goat.

Energetic processes are outlined here in such a way that you can visualize the connections yourself, as well as follow along with invaluable illustrations throughout. Photographs and beautiful drawings both demonstrate the processes well. Enough case studies and examples are given that you can truly develop a template to begin to use with your own creatures. *My only wish to add to this book would be a spiral workbook format to lay flat in the barnyard, and with extra blank pages in each section for keeping notes.

Another exciting feature of this book is within several chapters on the topic of holistic management and nutrition of the goat. Any goat owner, new or old, would benefit from reading just this portion of the book. As it is, the entire book is delightful. Many will be pleased to also find an introduction of steps that you can take for holistic management of your stock. Some desire to work toward this goal, and Ms. Eastman's outline will help to make that possible by encouraging progress in steady measurable steps. Those using herbal remedies will also find a cross-reference chart of products from Herbalists that are well-known and loved in the goat community.

This is a book that teaches a technique, not a book of pre-made answers to look up. Plan to practice these steps in order to learn how to develop your own sense of what will and will not work in individual situations. It would be great to see a network of people practicing and learning these methods. Ms. Eastman is a great advocate for education about goats and holistic ways, and no doubt will be a valuable asset in that avenue as well by reaching out to fellow goatherds at local events and in online forums. I'm looking forward to learning something new!

Valuable daily resource for the holistic herd. And a great roadmap for those interesting in partial or full transition.

So, lets start with the fact that I use chemicals, vaccines and medications on my herd. BUT... I use them as little as possible. Some of our animals have gone as long as 6 years without worming and thrive. I've followed Carrie Eastman's blog and Facebook group for a few years and have found her advice sound and based in firm science. She is also very well grounded in Energy therapies and is deeply heartful. As someone with both a degree in Equine Science and a Masters in Human Manual Therapies I appreciate her practical approach.

I really do like what she's done in the section on various energetic methods and the descriptive tutorials. The photos are clear, the case histories are good and the little hints, reminders and alerts are well placed. It's a LOT of information, but laid out in a very accessible way.

I cannot stress strongly enough the value of the sections on diet, minerals and gut health. Her guidance in this area has really helped us to cut feed and wormer costs, provide nutrition in the form that goats can use and improved the immune systems of all the animals. The stronger the immune system the less problems you have with parasites.

What impresses me most about the book is that, even years after you've read the introductions and guided tutorials on a variety of energy methods, you will still be using this book as a reference for reading feed and supplement labels, deciding which forms of minerals are best suited for your herds needs and evaluating commercially available supplements. I'll be using my copy as a handy place to add notes on resources, compare supplements and note emerging antiparasitics (wormers, etc.)

And... though my artwork is used in the book, I receive no financial compensation for it or this review. As was my choice. It's a good book. It's going to help a lot of folks and their goats live healthier lives. Consider at least downloading a Kindle sample and reviewing it yourself.
